Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When the series begins, solicitor Peter Kingdom is feeling the loss of his half-brother Simon. What has happened to him?

Answer: Missing, presumed drowned

Simon Kingdom's belongings have washed ashore and there is no body yet after nearly a year. It is presumed he committed suicide. But as the first season progresses, the circumstances surrounding his disappearance become increasingly mysterious and Peter begins to think he's still alive. He shows up out of nowhere at the beginning of season 2, but is gone again for season 3.
2. Lyle Anderson, Peter Kingdom's trainee/law clerk, chose his university for what reason?

Answer: There was a snooker table in every residence hall

Peter mentions this in the first season, whether he's serious or it's simply a Cambridge man laughing at his young clerk's expense is not known. Lyle is later made the partner in Kingdom & Kingdom.
3. Peter's sister Beatrice comes back to Market Shipborough in the first episode. Where has she been?

Answer: In a mental hospital

The exact nature of Beatrice's illness is never mentioned, but she needs medication and has a history of violent outbursts. She's a bit unstable, but evens out a bit as the series progresses.
4. The men of Market Shipborough compete in what odd sport?

Answer: Dyke jumping

Dyke jumping, or Fierljeppen, originated in the Friesland region of Holland and made its way to the fenlands of England. It's like pole vaulting over a muddy drainage ditch or dyke. The other three are also legit English sports and pub games.
5. Peter Kingdom lives with his father.

Answer: False

Roger Kingdom, the senior partner in the Kingdom & Kingdom law office, is already dead when the series starts. He is the father of Peter and his younger, problematic half-siblings Simon and Beatrice. Their mothers are presumably dead.
6. Peter is often visiting a family member in a local retirement home on a country estate. Who is it?

Answer: Aunt Auriel

Aunt Auriel, played by great British actress Phyllida Law, runs the retirement community. She is eccentric but a grounding force and wise councilor for her nephew. She's always there to listen to his problems and watch late-night movies. She is quite blunt and pulls no punches, which is one of the best things about her.
7. Local character Sydney Snell spends most of his time doing what?

Answer: Suing the local council

Mr. Snell is a smelly, disheveled man who is seemingly obsessed by suing the council, trying to stop them from doing everything from building carparks to putting speed bumps in front of his house. Peter tells him "If I had a loyalty scheme, you would win a set of steak knives every week." He often carries around a plastic bag of unknown contents.

He is played by comedian and longtime friend of Stephen Fry, Tony Slattery.
8. What classic car does Peter Kingdom drive?

Answer: Alvis TE1

Peter's beloved Alvis TE1 drophead coupe is frequently breaking down, but hey, it's a classic! He hates for Beatrice to drive it, but she does anyway, sometimes with bad results.
9. The local pub is the Drunken Mallard.

Answer: False

The Startled Duck is run by landlord Ted, and fields a dyke jumping team.
10. What are the names of Peter's nephew and niece?

Answer: Daniel and Petra

Daniel is Simon's son with Honor O'Sullivan. Both Honor and Daniel disappear with no explanation after season 2. Petra is Beatrice's daughter. Gloria is the secretary/office manager who is the glue that holds the firm together, Scott is Gloria's son, and Hermione Norris plays Beatrice Kingdom.
