Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Renowned actor Jimmy Stewart made a foray into television in 1971 with the eponymous family sit-com "The Jimmy Stewart Show". What was his character's occupation on the show?

Answer: college professor

Jimmy portrayed James Howard, a college anthropology professor. Everything was humming along smoothly until he agrees to allow his son (Jonathan Daly) and family to move in with him after their house burned. To complicate things, Howard's wife, Martha (Julie Adams), has a son who is same age as one of their grandsons. The show ran for a full season on the NBC network.
2. Who was the lead actor in the sit-com "Barefoot in the Park"?

Answer: Scoey Mitchell

The original was a play written by Neil Simon. The TV show debuted in September 1970 on the ABC network and was meant to be a lead-in for "The Odd Couple" (another Simon play). While "The Odd Couple" proved to be a more popular TV show, "Barefoot in the Park" was beset with problems, most centering on Mitchell, and was cancelled in January 1971. Along with Mitchell, it featured Tracy Reed as wife Corie and Thelma Carpenter as Corie's mother.
3. "Shirley's World" starred which well-known actress in the lead?

Answer: Shirley MacLaine

Not to be confused with "Shirley" (1979-80) starring Shirley Jones, "Shirley's World" centered on reporter/photographer Shirley Logan. She worked for a magazine and her assignments could take her to almost any part of the world. The only other regular cast member was John Gregson who played the magazine editor, Dennis Croft. This show ran from September 1971 to January 1972 on ABC.
4. What was the premise of "The Paul Lynde Show"?

Answer: An attorney has to deal with a non-conformist son-in-law.

Airing on ABC from September 1972 to September 1973, Paul Lynde portrayed Paul Simms, a conservative attorney whose daughter Barbara (Jane Actman) marries Howie Dickerson (John Calvin) who is a long-haired, eccentric college student who just happens to have a genius IQ. Also on hand was Elizabeth Allen playing Paul's wife, Martha, and Pamelyn Ferdin as Paul's younger daughter.
5. On "Lotsa Luck," what was the protagonist's marital status?

Answer: single

Bachelor Stanley Belmont (Dom DeLuise) works at a bus company's lost-and-found counter. The show's plots didn't rely as much on his working life as it did with his home life where lives with his domineering mother (Kathleen Freeman), sister Olive (Beverly Sanders), and a ne'er-do-well brother-in-law, Arthur (Wynn Irwin). "Lotsa Luck" ran on the NBC network from September 1973 to May 1974 and was based on the British sit-com "On the Busses".
6. The sit-com "Roll Out" was set during what war?

Answer: WW2

The action took place in France during WW2 and revolved around the 5050th Trucking Company, nicknamed the "Red Ball Express". The mission was to get supplies to the front line troops no matter what. In command was Captain Cavelli (Val Bisoglio). The most reliable drivers were Jed (Hilly Hicks) and Sweet (Stu Gilliam).

This sit-com, which aired on CBS from October 1973 to January 1974, was based on an actual WW2 transportation unit.
7. What actor played the lead in "Needles and Pins"?

Answer: Norman Fell

This short-lived sit-com played on NBC from September to December 1973 and featured Fell as Nathan Davidson, a garment district businessman. His brother Harry (Louis Nye) was his partner with Deirdre Lenihan as his new designer, Wendy. Plots were mainly about Harry's dealing with these people and others he came in contact with including Sonia, his bookkeeper; Charlie, a salesman; and his prime competitor, Julius Singer (Milton Selzer), among others.
8. How many sons did Joe have on "Joe and Sons"?

Answer: 2

Joe Vitale (Richard Castellano) was a widower with two teenage sons, Mark (Barry Miller) and Nick (Jimmy Baio). He had a blue collar job with a manufacturing company. The plots were mainly Joe's efforts to raise a family, hold down a job, and still find time to socialize.

He sometimes relied on his neighbor Estelle (Bobbi Jordan) for help. This series ran on CBS from September 1975 to January 1976.
9. What "tough guy" actor played the lead in "Big Eddie"?

Answer: Sheldon Leonard

Eddie Smith was a former gambler trying to go straight by running a legitimate sports arena. He lived with his wife Honey (Sheree North), granddaughter Ginger (Quinn Cummings), and brother Jessie (Alan Oppenheimer), who acted as Eddie's accountant. Despite his extended family, the show's premise couldn't extend it beyond 10 episodes (August to November 1975).
10. "Fish" was a spin-off of what popular sit-com?

Answer: Barney Miller

Detective Phil Fish (Abe Vigoda) worked for the NYPD on "Barney Miller" from 1975 to 1977. However, in the spin-off, the plots focused more on his home life. Bernice, his oft-mentioned wife on "Barney Miller", was played by Florence Stanley. The story-lines revolved around their moving out of an apartment and buying a house to take in rambunctious foster children. "Fish" aired on ABC from February 1977 to June 1978.
