Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the first episode, "The Temple of Evil", the TARDIS appears inside an Aztec tomb. Which of the time travellers is captured by warriors while exploring their surroundings?

Answer: Barbara Wright

Barbara (Wright) and Susan (Foreman) discover a room full of artifacts when they emerge from the TARDIS, and Barbara, with her teacher's knowledge of the Aztec period, immediately recognizes where and roughly when they are. They find a door that opens onto another room, and Barbara goes through to explore, when she is quickly discovered by the High Priest Autloc and two warriors. Thankfully, she had put on an bracelet, which led the priest to believe that she was Hight Priest Yetaxa reincarnated coming out of his tomb.

The Doctor's three companions in this serial are his granddaughter Susan Foreman (played by Carole Ann Ford), and her teachers Barbara Wright (played by Jacqueline Hill) and Ian Chesterton (played by William Russell).

The High Priest of Knowledge, Autloc, was played by Keith Pyott.
2. Ian is chosen to vie for the right to command the Aztec army as one of Yetaxa's servants. Which warrior is Ian required to fight in order to take command?

Answer: Ixta

The quandary facing Ian is that the commander of the Aztec army is required to escort the chosen human sacrifice to the Ceremony of the Rain God, and then hold him down while the sacrifice is carried out. He expresses his doubts to The Doctor, but The Doctor insists that they should not interfere with the Aztec ways.

The warrior Ixta was played by Ian Cullen.
3. When the sacrifice to the rain god is to be made, 'Yetaxa' forbids it. Is she successful in preventing the young man's death?

Answer: No

Even though the High Priest of Sacrifice obeys Barbara as Yetaxa, the young man meant to be sacrificed is dishonored in the process. Rather than live with dishonor, the man throws himself from the heights, causing his own death anyway. Immediately, the clouds form and rain begins to fall, vindicating the High Priest in his belief, and casting doubt on whether Barbara truly is Yetaxa returned.

The High Priest of Sacrifice, Tlotoxl, was played by John Ringham, while Tom Booth was the sacrifice victim.
4. In the second episode, "The Warriors of Death", The Doctor makes arrangements to view drawings of the temple (in order to find a way back inside to the TARDIS). Who is the owner of the drawings?

Answer: Ixta

The Doctor learns of the drawings while speaking with Cameca, a woman residing in the gardens, and she makes arrangements for The Doctor to meet Ixta. Although a warrior, Ixta is also the son of the man who designed and built the temple.

When meeting Ixta, The Doctor is not aware that he is the same warrior scheduled to fight against Ian for the title of Commander of the Army. Consequently, in order to ensure that he can see the drawings after the fight, he provides Ixta with the means to cheat and win (using the toxins of a local plant to slow his opponent down).

It is later revealed that Ixta tricked The Doctor into helping him, as he actually had no drawings.
5. The contest between Ian and the rival warrior ends poorly for Ian, and he is on the verge of being killed when someone intervenes. Who?

Answer: Barbara

After the cliffhanger of the second episode, we see the resolution at the beginning of episode three, "The Bride of Sacrifice". Just as Ixta prepares to deliver a killing blow to the weakened Ian, Barbara (as Yetaxa) forbids the fight to continue. The High Priest of Sacrifice tries to force Barbara to show herself either divine or not by requiring HER to stop the fight.

She does so by holding a knife to Tlotoxl's throat.
6. In the third episode, "The Bride of Sacrifice", marriage becomes a real possibility... for which member(s) of the TARDIS?

Answer: Both of them

When The Doctor shares a cup of cocoa with Cameca, it means that they are engaged to be married. He did this not realizing what it meant, thinking only that he was sharing with a person of likemindedness.

Susan, being trained in the laws of the Aztecs, is commanded to marry the 'perfect victim', the young man set to be sacrificed with the scheduled eclipse of the sun in a couple of days. When Susan refuses, she breaks Aztec law and must be punished... this is also set for the day of the eclipse.
7. The Doctor learns of a secret entrance to the tomb from Cameca, and he and Ian go to explore it under the cover of darkness. What danger does Ian face inside the tunnel?

Answer: Drowning

Ixta follows Ian to his rendezvous with The Doctor and sees them move the stone cover to the tunnel. After Ian goes in, Ixta comes and replaces the stone, sealing it behind Ian and explaining to the stunned Doctor that the tunnel, if left open, would fill with water from the lake and destroy the garden. Ian finds himself trapped and water begins to fill the tunnel. So ends the third episode; another cliffhanger leading to the final episode.
8. "The Day of Darkness" opens as Ian survives his ordeal in the tunnel and finds his way into the tomb by the TARDIS. Going back out the door he leaves a rope to be able to pull it open again from the outside. What happens to keep them from getting back in?

Answer: The rope breaks when they try to pull on it

Despite Ian's efforts to enable reentry into the tomb, the rope he used is too old to sustain the force of their pull and it snaps. With no other option, they realize they must try to get back in through the tunnel again. Unbeknownst to them, the High Priest of Sacrifice and Ixta have once again set a plan in motion to discredit the visitors.
9. When Ian and Susan go back to the tunnel entrance in the garden, they find a man lying unconscious with Ian's club on the ground next him. Who is it?

Answer: The High Priest of Knowledge

The High Priest of Sacrifice and Ixta made a plan to attack the High Priest of Knowledge in the garden, and to lay the blame on Ian. Their ruse works and Ian and Susan are captured while the High Priest of Knowledge finally has doubts as to the 'divinity' of Yetaxa. Ian, of course, is sentenced to death for the attack.
10. Who effects the escape of Ian and Susan before the eclipse sacrifice ceremony?

Answer: Cameca

With the plan to reenter the tomb through the tunnel foiled, The Doctor comes up with a plan to create a pulley, reattach the rope and go in as Ian originally planned, through the main door to the tomb. With Ian and Susan's escape from their captivity, Ian disguises himself as a warrior in Yetaxa's escort (to the place of sacrifice). When the High Priest of Sacrifice tries to assassinate her, Ian intervenes, then battles Ixta one last time, killing him and allowing them all to escape.

Unfortunately for Barbara, she learned that she was unable to change the course of history with the Aztec practice of human sacrifice.
