Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Teams started a new race around the world in Los Angeles at the beginning of "The Amazing Race 37", but how many teams were included in the roster?

Answer: Fourteen

Breaking the (U.S.) show's record for most teams, this thirty-seventh race around the world saw fourteen new couples as they commenced their journey in Los Angeles, assembling for the starting line inside the dome of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. Phil informed the teams off the jump that this season would feature more surprises than ever before, and that would start with a Fork in the Road in Leg 1, which would sent teams in one of two directions, eliminating more than one team as a result.

Once teams were given the go, they raced to their bags, opened their clues, and headed to LAX on one of two flights (landing an hour apart) bound for Hong Kong where they would need to locate the Tian Tan Buddha.
2. Racers encountered their first Road Block of the race on Cheung Chau Island. During this task, team members had to do which of the following?

Answer: Climb bamboo

Arriving in Hong Kong, racers took cabs and climbed the stairs at the Tian Tan Buddha to start a bit of a navigation gauntlet as their next clue had them locating the Central Piers, hopping on the proper Sun Ferry, and heading across the water to the Cheung Chau Ferry Pier. There, they could search on foot for the clue box at the nearby promenade and their first Road Block clue.

This task required that one team member 'be ready for some ups and downs', and once selected, that racer had to climb to the top of a bamboo tower constructed for the local Bun Festival, collecting a clue at the top and descending back to their partner at the bottom. This task was finished by Ana, Bernie, Han, Lori, Brett, Josiah, Carson, Mike, Bridget, Erika, Jasmin, Mark, Pops, and Lauren.

After this, racers had to make their way to the Lok Kwan Street Park to find the Fork in the Road.
3. Teams who completed the 'Dance' task in Leg 1 had to wear the costume of which animal for their Hong Kong-themed challenge?

Answer: Lion

Racers found the Fork in the Road board in the Lok Kwan Street Park and had to make a decision, then and there, to complete one of two Detour-esque tasks, locking in their position en route to the Pit Stop.

Half of the teams needed to complete 'Dance', so Nick and Mike, Carson and Jack, Ernest and Bridget, Bernie and Carrigain, Mark and Larry, Brett and Mark, and Courtney and Jasmin took this route.

For this task, racers made their way to the Jao-Tsung-I Academy and picked a pair of instructors to show them how to wear a traditional lion dance costume. With this, the racers needed to dress up and learn the choreographed routine. Proper completion meant receiving a clue.
4. Racers finishing the 'Sing' task in Hong Kong (in Leg 1) had to sing in which language at the opera?

Answer: Cantonese

In the 'Sing' Fork in the Road task, racers had to join the Cantonese Opera by heading to the Xiqu Centre. There, both team members needed to dress in elaborate costumes and makeup, taking to the stage, and learning how to perform the movements and lines of a traditional Cantonese opera show.

Alyssa and Josiah, Han and Holden, Jonathan and Ana, Melinda and Erika, Pops and Jeff, Scott and Lori, and Jackye and Lauren landed at this challenge, testing their artistic merits for their discerning and cultured audience to get their next clue.
5. Two teams were eliminated at the end of the race's first leg. Which of these was one of them?

Answer: Mark and Larry

Teams who completed their Fork in the Road tasks received one last clue and raced onward to the race's first Pit Stop, the Art Park Terrace in West Kowloon Cultural District. Here, one team from each path at the fork would win the leg, and one team from each would head home at this early point.

The winners, Carson and Jack from the 'Dance' task and Alyssa and Josiah from the 'Sing' task, managed the victory this leg, each of them landing on their respective Pit Stop mat first and winning $3,000 USD.

Mark and Larry, who were the last to arrive from the 'Dance' task, and Jackye and Lauren, who were last to arrive from 'Sing', were both eliminated, leaving twelve teams competing into the second leg of the race.
6. Racers' first destination in Osaka, Japan (in Leg 2) took them to what famous landmark?

Answer: Tsutenkaku Tower

Leaving the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade in Hong Kong, teams ripped open clues to start their second leg with instructions to fly to the city of Osaka, Japan, doing so by visiting a specified travel agency (Skywards Travel) in the Crocodile Center where they would need to book their own flights.

After a fifteen hundred mile flight northeast, racers could hit the ground running and proceed to their next clue box waiting in front of the iconic Tsutenkaku Tower and then race by taxi through the city to Namba Hatch.
7. Racers encountered the Intersection in Leg 2. Which of these pairings did not occur?

Answer: Brett & Mark/Nick & Mike

Reaching Namba Hatch, racers were surprised by the long-awaited return of the classic race mechanic, the Intersection. For this, racers cracked open Road Block clues, but only after pairing with another team, meaning that one member of each team was required to join with another to complete the next task.

In this, racers headed into Namba Hatch and learned how to perform a group taiko drum routine, playing in time with the musicians on stage (and each other) to get their next clue from their instructor. Completing the task would also complete the Intersection.
8. How many mochi balls did teams completing the 'Mochi' Detour task need to create?

Answer: 12

Completing the Road Block/Intersection combo, racers were sent, on foot, to Dotonbori Bridge to find their Detour clue. Here, teams chose between 'Mochi' and 'Mawashi'. For 'Mochi', racers went physical, joining the local confectioners at the Ohama Daishin Arena near the Osaka waterfront to make a dozen mochi balls, pounding enough steamed rice to create the dish properly. If they could make twelve passable samples, they would get their next clue.

Only Courtney and Jasmin, Pops and Jeff, and Melinda and Erika took this choice.
9. In Osaka (in Leg 2), some racers had to learn how to tie a mawashi for their Detour task. Which of these is a mawashi?

Answer: A sumo loincloth

The 'Mawashi' Detour option sent teams to Ohama Park to find the Ohama Sumo Arena whereupon they needed to partake in Japan's national sport. Racers had to learn how to properly tie a mawashi, a traditional sumo cloth, by working together to wrap the thirty-foot accoutrement around each other. Once they did this properly and, together, pushed their sumo wrestler instructor out of the clay ring, they could get their next clue and keep racing.

Carson and Jack, Jonathan and Ana, Nick and Mike, Alyssa and Josiah, Scott and Lori, Bernie and Carrigain, Han and Holden, Brett and Mark, and Ernest and Bridget went to this option.
10. Which team was eliminated in Osaka at the end of Leg 2?

Answer: Ernest and Bridget

Racers had to hop into cabs to end off their second leg, and directing their drivers into the north end of Osaka, they had to locate the idyllic grounds of Katsuo-ji to reach the Pit Stop at the Tahoto Pagoda. Jonathan and Ana propelled themselves to a sustained lead and took the win this leg (with Scott and Lori making up ground behind them), celebrating their seventh wedding anniversary with a ten-day Expedia prize package for two to Mount Kilimanjaro.

It was Ernest and Bridget who landed on the mat in last, having fallen from the front of the pack to the back at the Intersection. They were eliminated in twelfth place.
