In the 1978-79 season, the top five rated shows were all sit-coms that ran on ABC and two more from the network made the top ten that year. "Laverne & Shirley" ranked number one with a share of 30.5. The story of the two bottle workers in Milwaukee was a spin-off of "Happy Days" which ranked number four that year with a 27.7 share. "Happy Days" was in its fifth season in 1978 and starred the likes of Henry Winkler as the Fonz and Ron Howard as Richie Cunningham. In one episode of "Happy Days", Robin Williams made a cameo as an alien named Mork from Ork. His performance earned Robin his own spin-off series and "Mork and Mindy" came in at number three that season with a 28.6 Nielsen rating.
"Three's Company", the show starring John Ritter, Suzanne Somers, and Joyce Dewitt ranked number two with a 30.3 share. You may remember the show featured one guy sharing an apartment with two women. The show had a spin-off called "The Ropers" about their landlords and this was the eighth most popular show in the 1978-79 season with a 25.2 market share. "Angie" only ran two seasons but managed to come in at number five with a 26.7 market share. The comedy starred Donna Pescow, Robert Hayes, and Doris Roberts as Angie's mom. The last ABC sit-com to crack the top that season was "Taxi" coming at number ten. The show was based in New York City and featured an all-star cast of Danny Devito, Judd Hersch, Tony Danza, Andy Kaufman, and Marilu Henner. "Taxi" premiered that season.
There were no NBC shows that made into the top ten in the 1978-79 season but CBS scored three shows on the list. The long-running television news show, "60 Minutes" ranked number six with a 25.5 market share. "M*A*S*H" was still in the top ten while reaching its seventh season. The comedy revolved around a medical unit set in Korea and starred Alan Alda as Hawkeye Pierce. "All In The Family" premiered in 1971 but still one of the most popular sit-coms seven years later. The story of the Bunker family in New York City ranked number nine for the season with 24.9 Nielsen share.
NBC's highest-ranked show was "Little House on the Prairie," which ranked number 14 that year. "Fantasy Island" was number 22 and "The Dukes of Hazzard" was number 20 that season. "Dallas" premiered as a mini-series in 1978 and "Six Million Dollar Man" ended in the season prior to 1978-79.
