1. Twelve founding members

The founding member countries were: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the United States.
2. Accession of Greece and Turkey

Greece and Turkey joined the alliance in February 1952 in order to strengthen the southern flank of the alliance.
3. Germany joins up

On the 6th of May 1955 the then West Germany joined up. A few days later the formation of the Warsaw Pact was announced.
4. Spain accession to the alliance

Spain joins up despite intense popular opposition.
5. First wave of post Cold-war

Czechia, Hungary and Poland on 12 March 1999, became the first former members of the Warsaw Pact to join NATO.
6. Second bunch of post Cold-war enlargement

On 29 March 2004 Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia became members of the Alliance.
This was the largest wave of enlargement in NATO history.
7. Albania and Croatia join up

On 1 April 2009 the two Balkan countries became official members of the Alliance .
8. Montenegro joins up

Montenegro became a member of the Alliance on 5 June 2017.
9. North Macedonia enters the alliance

On 27 March 2020, North Macedonia became NATO's 30th member.
10. Finland joins up

4 April 2023, Finland became the Alliance's 31st member country.
