Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. December 30, 2006 in Baghdad, Iraq

Answer: Saddam Hussein

The Iraqi revolutionary ruled over the country for 24 years; his regime was criticized for various human rights abuses, and his lavish lifestyle (as well as his family's) and eccentric behavior led to several conflicts with neighboring countries. After the United States invaded Iraq in 2003, he went into hiding but was captured during the same year. Three years later, he was executed by hanging following a trial.
2. December 25, 1989 in Targoviste, Romania

Answer: Nicolae Ceausescu

The communist leader was leading the last communist regime in the Warsaw pact following the weakening of the Soviet Union and the fall of the Berlin wall. After realizing that his people were turning against him, he was forced to flee with his wife but he was shortly captured. His execution by firing squad was expedited because of fear that loyalists may try to save him.
3. October 20, 2011 in Sirte, Libya

Answer: Muammar Gaddafi

After serving as the "Brotherly Leader" of Libya for 36 years, the alleged dictator fled after the fall of Tripoli to NATO forces, but he was soon captured by rebel forces. The circumstances of his death are not completely clear, but video has surfaced showing that he was beaten severely and likely murdered by the rebel forces to avoid loyalist rescue.
4. March 15, 44 BCE in Rome, Italy

Answer: Julius Caesar

Many senators felt that Caesar's accumulation of power was undermining the strength, unity, and legitimacy of the Roman Republic, and they conspired to assassinate him in the Theatre of Pompey in Rome where he was stabbed 23 times. After the killing, the senators walked through the streets of Rome chanting: "People of Rome, we are once again free".

Many of Caesar's supporters would respond by burning down the Senate in revenge.
5. April 28, 1945 in Giulino di Mezzegra, Italy

Answer: Benito Mussolini

The Italian fascist dictator had made many enemies by joining forces with Adolf Hitler and the German Nazis in World War II, but as the war was turning against the Axis Powers in Europe, the Italian people rebelled against Mussolini's regime. He was forced to flee before being captured by rebels.

The public display of his body to the world convinced Adolf Hitler to commit suicide a few days later to avoid a similar fate at the hands of the Red Army that was soon to take Berlin.
6. January 21, 1793 in Paris, France

Answer: King Louis XVI

The last king of France was the unfortunate target of one of the most brutal and organized political and cultural revolutions. The French rebels denounced everything about their monarchy, most pointedly their king. He was deposed as absolute monarch on 21 September 1792 and was tried for high treason as "Citizen Louis Capet".

He was found guilty and sentenced to death by guillotine alongside his wife.
7. 10 Thermidor, Year II in Paris, France

Answer: Maximilien Robespierre

Just over a year and a half after the French revolution had executed their former king, their leader, the lawyer and statesman Robespierre, who heavily influenced the French Reign of Terror which massacred an estimated 40,000 people, was overthrown and captured for his extremist views and brutal violence.

He was executed, also by guillotine in the second year of the newly designed French calendar on 10 Thermidor (28 July, 1794).
8. May 2, 2011 in Abbottabad, Pakistan

Answer: Osama bin Laden

The terrorist and murderer had evaded capture for almost a decade following his organization, al Qaeda's attacks on the United States on 9/11/2001. American intelligence was able to locate him in a large mansion in the city of Abbottabad, Pakistan. A team of Navy SEALs was dispatched to capture and eliminate him, which they did successfully, burying his body at sea following the raid.
9. 17 July, 1918 in Yekaterinburg, Russia

Answer: Nicholas II

11 people of the ruling Romanov family and their entourage were killed after they have been captured for several months, including the Czar's five children. In order to prevent the bodies being recovered and used for anti-communist support, the killers mutilated and buried the bodies.
10. February 14, 2005 in Beirut, Lebanon

Answer: Rafik Hariri

I personally remember the sound of the bomb that echoed throughout the Lebanese capital when ex-prime Minister Hariri was assassinated by a car bomb that killed 21 others following his two decade long involvement with Lebanese and regional politics and war.

A special tribunal determined Lebanese militia group and US-designated terrorist organization Hezbollah responsible for the assassination, while many others believe Syrian involvement. The death of Hariri led to the Cedar Revolution, a series of protests in 2005 that eventually expelled the Syrian army from Lebanon.
