4. According to Yorkshire Televison, the title 'Heartbeat' was chosen because it refers to which of the following?

Answer: All of these choices are correct

Originally 'Heartbeat' was given the title 'Country Constable'. In the first season, the focus is mainly on the policeman Nick and his doctor wife Kate. However, in the later series, the focus widens to include many of the regular characters.
5. The show's theme song, 'Heartbeat', is performed by Nick Berry. However, it was not written for the show. It was based on a 1950's hit song by which well known American singer?

Answer: Buddy Holly

'Heartbeat' was written by Bob Montgomery and Norman Petty. It was recorded in 1958 by Buddy Holly. It was only a moderately successful hit for Buddy Holly, despite being re-released after his death in a plane crash in 1959. Nick Berry's version, however, was a big hit in the UK, reaching number 2 and remaining in the charts for eight weeks.
6. Heartbeat's resident petty criminal, Claude Jeremiah Greengrass, is played by Bill Maynard. Why was Greengrass/Maynard written out of the series?

Answer: Bill Maynard suffered a stroke

In the year 2000 while making the 10th series, Maynard suffered a mild stroke. Fortunately, he has recovered and was subsequently given a clean bill of health. However, he has not returned to the series as he is following his doctor's recommendation to lighten his workload. He also suffers from diabetes.
7. Greengrass had a faithful canine companion. What was the name of his dog?

Answer: Alfred

Alfred the dog is played by Tramp. He is a mixed breed of greyhound and Bedlington terrier. Tramp was rescued from the RSPCA pound and now works for the company 'Whoofers' who provide the animals for the series.
8. Which regular cast member actually lives in the village in which 'Heartbeat' is set?

9. During the years that the episodes of 'Heartbeat' were first aired on television (1992 to 1998), which of the following cast members was allegedly the highest paid actor in the UK?

Answer: Nick Berry

Yorkshire Television was commissioned by ITV to produce 'Heartbeat'. As a result of a lucrative contract with ITV, Nick Berry became the highest paid actor in the UK, not for 'Heartbeat' alone but a number of shows including 'Paparazzo', 'Respect' and 'The Black Velvet Band'. He was reportedly paid around $70,000 an episode for 'Heartbeat'.
10. Nick's first wife Kate tragically dies of leukaemia shortly after giving birth to their daughter. Nick subsequently marries the village school teacher and moves to Canada to become a "mountie" (Canadian Mounted Policeman). What is his second wife's name?

Answer: Jo

Ruby is Nick's mother, Eileen is Kate's aunt and Maggie is the district nurse. Jo (nee Weston) is played by Juliette Gruber. Juliette is the niece of the well-known American actor, Walter Matthau.
