Originally the only characters were Dilbert, an engineer and creator of bizarre inventions, and his pet, Dogbert, who had megalomanical ambitions. Later it moved into the office of a large technology organisation and the cast of characters was expanded allowing for ever more Kafkaesque situations. Any attempt at productivity by the engineers is thwarted by the twisted personalities in administration or by the pointy haired boss's perception of what will advantage his position in the company. In the Merry Melodies cartoon titled "Bedevilled Rabbit" (1957), Bugs Bunny was hiding in a crate of carrots which was parachuted into Tasmania. All of the animals were on the run because the Tasmanian Devil was on the loose. Bugs tried to outsmart the Tasmanian Devil by acting like a monkey and saying that monkeys were not on the Tasmanian Devil's menu. Eventually, in his typical cheeky fashion, Bugs swatted the Tasmanian Devil on the back and said, "Tag you're it baggy eyes!" Bugs was caught and prepared like a turkey, as a meal. Bugs tricked the Tasmanian Devil by preparing "wild turkey surprise" which was eaten and exploded in the Tasmanian Devil's belly. They then had a typical screaming match which produced a chase. Bugs ran into the local trading store and bought a few things in order to be disguised as a female Tasmanian devil. Bugs used a bear trap as a mouth and lips. They kissed, the trap snapped onto the devil's face and then the devil's wife came along and clobbered the Tasmanian Devil with a rolling pin. The cartoon's story was created by Tedd Pierce. The animation was created by George Grandpre, Ted Bonnicksen and Keith Darling. The voices were done by Mel Blanc and the cartoon was directed by Robert McKimson.

"Mickey's Service Station" was directed by Ben Sharpsteen. Goofy, Mickey and Donald get separated from one another when they are supposed to perform a particular task assigned to them. The cartoon shows each of them trying to handle their own separate problems, which eventually lead to their becoming reunited and sharing in the success of their efforts.

"Li'l Abner", by Al Capp, ran from 1934 to 1977. Mostly about a group of hillbillies living in Dogpatch, USA, the Schmoo was found by Li'l Abner in a hidden valley. They have the appearance of bowling pins used in Duck Pin Bowling with stubby legs. They may not sound like they would fit into a hillbilly comic strip but the world went crazy for them; there were all kinds of Schmoo toys and merchandise.

Created as early as 1919, Felix the Cat has enjoyed a long run of popularity, including a TV series in the late 1950s, and the "Twisted Tales" series in the 1990s. He is a black cat and the theme song of the earlier series had him carrying a "bag of tricks" which he used to help him out of scrapes. In the episode in the question ("Felix in Nightdrop Land") Felix slips himself through the video nightdrop slot and falls asleep in a boxful of returned video tapes. An anthropomorphic video player declares itself to be hungry and feeds on some of the tapes, ingesting the sleeping Felix in the process. Felix appears superimposed in scenes from a number of old movies, the first of these being a black and white surfer film during which we see Felix asleep on a surfboard. Subsequent snacking by the hungry machine propels him into a spaghetti western, a monster movie and various comedy spots.

The Man of Steel was created in Ohio by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster in 1933. However he wouldn't appear in a published comic until 1938, which is the date he is officially considered to have been created. He moved into animation in 1941 when Max Fleischer animated him in seventeen shorts that were aired at movie theaters. Bud Collyer was the voice actor at the time.

Sally Brown is Charlie Brown's sister. Her "Sweet Babboo" is Linus van Pelt, the best friend of Charlie Brown and Lucy van Pelt's brother. All are characters in the comic strip 'Peanuts', created by Charles M. Schulz, which ran from October 2, 1950, to February 13, 2000 (just after Schulz's death). Goofy has maintained a multimedia status since 1933. He appeared in daily comic strips, with Mickey Mouse, as a neighbor and sometimes as an associate of Mickey's. Eventually the story lines for the comics became tiresome so artist Floyd Gottfredson and his team developed new adventures, mostly in the case of Goofy, that clearly defined the personalities of the characters. Over time, Mickey relied on both Donald and Goofy, in many cartoon situations, as his "boon" companions. Now, over seventy years later, Goofy is still unbelievably popular all over the world. He appears in comic books and also in comic strips that are published in fourteen languages and in fifteen countries.

Quick Draw McGraw, a cartoon horse who was also a sheriff, was produced by Hanna-Barbera, and was their third successful cartoon, following behind "The Ruff and Reddy Show" and "Huckleberry Hound". Daws Butler, the same man who provided the voice for Quick Draw McGraw also provided the voice of Baba Looey.

"Jane", drawn by Norman Pett, appeared in the "Daily Mirror" from December 1932 to October 1959. Accompanied by her dachshund Fritz, Jane, a curvaceous blonde, had various misadventures which usually resulted in her inadvertently losing most of her clothing. During the war years she was enormously popular with the troops, and many of her escapades saw her in at least part of a uniform of one or other of the services. Prior to 1943 she always retained her underwear, but then she made a fully nude appearance, falling whilst getting out of her bath and landing in the middle of a crowd of British soldiers. In 1933 Max and Dave Fleischer took this "Thimble Theater" character known then as "Popeye the Sailor" and created animated cartoons. He quickly became a popular spinach eating sailor. In 1942 Paramount took control of the "Fleischer Studio" and produced more cartoons until 1957. By 1960, "King Features" carried on the cartoon phenomenon until 1962. "Hanna-Barbera Productions" took over the production of Popeye cartoons from 1978 to 1982 and then again from 1987 to 1988. A fun cartoon video called "Popeye the Sailor: Parley Vous Woo" (1956) is one of my favorites. Popeye and Olive Oyl were supposed to go on a date but she was too busy hoping to win a date with her romantic, French, heartthrob, television actor. Bluto appeared at the door, in disguise of course, and wooed Olive. Popeye was not at all pleased. Naturally the two men engaged in a duel over the love of Olive. A sword fight ensued which resulted with Popeye being stabbed right in his can of spinach. Of course, he ate the spinach, became strong and swift and defeated the villain, Bluto. Olive and Popeye were about to leave for their date again, when Popeye kissed Olive's hand. Olive turned red, like a thermometer with its temperature rising, and she melted, exclaiming, "Oh, I'm just like butter in your hands".

Art Babbitt, the creator of Goofy, described Goofy as "a composite of an everlasting optimist, a gullible Good Samaritan, a halfwit and a shiftless, good-natured hick. He is loose-jointed and gangly, but not rubbery." He used such description in the mid to late 1930s when he taught classes at the Disney studios for up and coming animators. Goofy was also described as fast moving but preferred to avoid any overexertion, by taking whichever easy way out of things that he could come up with. He was described as one who accepts things as being the best and also as amusing. Goofy was also described as one who loves to help everyone, but rarely completes a task at hand due to his bumbling nature. He is very easily distracted.
