Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which comic strip is set in a dysfunctional office world and includes a pointy haired boss, a dog whose aim is world domination and an engineer called Alice?

Answer: Dilbert

The comic strip, Dilbert, written by Scott Adams, was first published in 1989. Originally the only characters were Dilbert, an engineer and creator of bizarre inventions, and his pet, Dogbert, who had megalomanical ambitions. Later it moved into the office of a large technology organisation and the cast of characters was expanded allowing for ever more Kafkaesque situations. Any attempt at productivity by the engineers is thwarted by the twisted personalities in administration or by the pointy haired boss's perception of what will advantage his position in the company.

2. In the 'Peanuts' comic strip, who is Sally Brown's love interest?

Answer: Linus van Pelt

Sally Brown is Charlie Brown's sister. Her "Sweet Babboo" is Linus van Pelt, the best friend of Charlie Brown and Lucy van Pelt's brother. All are characters in the comic strip 'Peanuts', created by Charles M. Schulz, which ran from October 2, 1950, to February 13, 2000 (just after Schulz's death). The strip is considered to be one of the best in the history of the medium, with 17,897 strips published. What an effort!

3. During World War Two which comic strip did Winston Churchill describe as "Britain's secret weapon"?

Answer: Jane

"Jane", drawn by Norman Pett, appeared in the "Daily Mirror" from December 1932 to October 1959. Accompanied by her dachshund Fritz, Jane, a curvaceous blonde, had various misadventures which usually resulted in her inadvertently losing most of her clothing. During the war years she was enormously popular with the troops, and many of her escapades saw her in at least part of a uniform of one or other of the services. Prior to 1943 she always retained her underwear, but then she made a fully nude appearance, falling whilst getting out of her bath and landing in the middle of a crowd of British soldiers. Urban legend has it that this appearance was so morale boosting that it led to the Army advancing an extra five miles in Africa.

4. Our favourite fat cat, Garfield, with his long suffering owner, Jon, had a softer side that he tried to hide. What was the name of his beloved teddy bear?

Answer: Pooky

In the original comic strip by Jim Davis, Garfield made Jon Arbuckle's life a misery. Annoying Odie the dog and eating all of the lasagna in sight, he was a cat to be reckoned with! First published in 1978, Garfield was the laziest but still the coolest cat in town! No matter where his antics took him, no matter how crazy his day turned out, Pooky the bear was always there to make it better.

5. In the English language version of the 'Asterix' series of comic books, what was the name of the Druid who dispensed the magic potion?

6. Who is the long suffering wife of "Andy Capp"?

Answer: Flo

"Andy Capp" first appeared in the "Daily Mirror" in 1957. He was the creation of Reg Smythe, who drew him from 1957 until his death in 1998. He depicts an out of work man whose hobbies are drinking, pigeon racing, darts and snooker. "Flo" is his long suffering, hard working wife. Despite his faults "Andy Capp" is essentially lovable and from the beginning was always popular with the very people he was parodying.

7. The comic series "Footrot Flats" is set around a rural area in New Zealand. It revolves around the activities and adventures of Wal Footrot and his dog, called "The Dog". What is the Dog's real name?

Answer: We never know.

The Dog was raised by Wal's Aunty Dolly in her cat home and he was fostered by a cat named Ninky Pooh. He has had a lot to live down and while he was there Aunty Dolly gave him a name that embarrassed him so much that he has never allowed it to be printed. The Dog's creator Murray Ball was going to reveal the name but ultimately decided against it. From time to time characters have referred to the Dog by different names but none of these have been correct.
