1. Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas has been the heart of the city's business and gaming enterprises from the very beginning. Prior to the development of the Fremont Street Experience, what was the street's nickname?

Prior to the development of the Fremont Street Experience, when the street was still open to traffic, it was known as Glitter Gulch because of all the neon lights and signs. This is where cowboy Vegas Vic resided among other iconic neon symbols. Hotels began on Fremont Street in 1905 and development continued on the street over the years. In 1931 the first gaming establishment opened on the street. But by 1992 80% of business had moved to the strip so the Fremont Street Experience was born. Five blocks were closed to traffic and became a pedestrian walkway. A lighted canopy was installed over the length and the show began. Howard Hughes moved in on Thanksgiving Day in 1966 and rented all the rooms on the top two floors for ten days. When the owner requested he move out because his reservation was up Hughes promptly went and bought the enormous hotel. The famous "Crystal Showroom" of the hotel has featured almost every major star of the 1970's and 1980's. This hotel was the fifth resort to open its doors on the Las Vegas strip and in 2000 the 715-room hotel closed its doors for the final time.

Elvis is just one of the many entertainers to be featured at this Las Vegas hotel. Erected in 1969, the hotel also has the largest freestanding sign in the world. The hotel was used in the 1971 James Bond film "Diamonds Are Forever", the 1987 movie "Over the Top" and the 1993 drama "Indecent Proposal". Originally built in 1969, the hotel has undergone numerous renovations and is one of the few hotels in Las Vegas to have a 13th floor.

In addition to the Shark Reef Aquarium, a large saltwater aquarium, Mandalay Bay boasts a wave pool (with a connected pool for small children) and a lazy river, which is a water ride with rafts gently floating down a canal. The Excalibur Hotel and Casino is a castle-shaped resort which, when it opened in 1990, was the largest hotel in the world, having more than 4000 rooms. Although it had a strong Camelot and family-oriented theme when I visited in 2004, two years later Excalibur started removing most of the statuary and scenery and making the decor more generic and grown-up again.

According to legend, Thomas Hull and his friend were driving along Highway 91 when they had a flat tyre. While waiting for his friend to get help, Hull observed that the highway received lots of motor traffic and conceived the idea of building a hotel there. The idea was later expanded to include a casino and thus, El Rancho Vegas was born. The El Rancho Vegas was the first casino resort built on Highway 91. Prior to that, there were only smaller establishments such as the Pair O' Dice club. The success of El Rancho prompted the opening of other casino resorts, including the Hotel Last Frontier and the Flamingo, all concentrating on the stretch of Highway 91 that came to be known as The Strip. The Strip was named by one Guy McAfee, a police officer whose hometown was in Sunset Strip, California. The Luxor hotel in Las Vegas first opened its doors in 1993 and is one of the most unique buildings in the city. One of the largest hotels in the city, this giant glass pyramid has over 4,000 rooms and is 30 stories tall. At the top of the pyramid is a fixed-position spotlight, which at 42 billion candela is the strongest beam of light on the planet. Pointing straight up, the Luxor Sky Beam, as it is known, is visible over 275 miles (443km) away at night.
