Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Luxor
Constructed in 1993 as one of the largest glass-and-metal structures of all time, the Luxor was themed around Egypt and, as such, appears as a massive, dark pyramid at the southern end of the Las Vegas Strip. Named after the famous city in Egypt, the hotel stands thirty storeys tall and is guarded, at the front, by a recreation of the Sphinx (though the original, famously, is in Giza). Famous performers who've had residencies in the Luxor include the Blue Man Group, the Jabbawockeez, and Cirque de Soleil.
Sharing its stretch of the Strip are the Excalibur and Mandalay Bay, both of which sit south of Tropicana Ave.
2. New York, New York
Themed around the Big Apple (clearly), New York, New York is at the corner of Tropicana and Las Vegas Blvd., and you'll be able to tell which one it is, if not by the way it attempt to emulate the New York City Skyline with its façade, then probably by the massive Statue of Liberty and replica Brooklyn Bridge out front.
At the time of its completion, this massive casino had the tallest tower on the Strip (and in Nevada)-- a recreation of the Empire State Building capping out at forty-seven storeys. Notably, the hotel and casino features a roller coaster that loops through and around the building.
3. The Cosmopolitan
Opening in 2010, the Cosmo found quick popularity as one of the larger and more central casinos on the Strip, but it was placed amongst a set of highly-thematic venues. Contrasting these, the Cosmopolitan actually comes across as quite modern, similar to the Aria Casino and CityCenter, right across Harmon Avenue to the south.
In addition to a number of art installations, the Cosmo is known for its massive chandelier consisting of millions of crystals, spanning several stories of its atrium's interior.
4. Bellagio
Constructed in the mid-1990s, the Bellagio is a massive casino and hotel complex themed around Italy, and it's far from the only one on the Strip to fit this bill. Most notably, the Bellagio features a massive fountain fixture in front of its main building, and because of its choreographed water and light shows, it's one of the most visited spots in Las Vegas (and one of the most photographed.
Inside the building, however, you'll find a massive casino complex that includes a conservatory, a botanical garden, a gallery of fine art with a rotating exhibition and, upon opening, the world's largest glass sculpture.
5. Paris Las Vegas
There's something to be said for both the idea of capturing a region's essence and the idea of creating massive replicas for the Strip. Paris Las Vegas does both, managing to create an air of French luxury in its spot across from the Bellagio, and it's hard to miss since the exterior features a half-size scale replica of the Eiffel Tower.
Naturally, you can find the Arc de Triomphe and the Louvre inside. The Paris Las Vegas Theatre is also quite noteworthy, having hosted residencies for "Jersey Boys", "We Will Rock You", and singer Barry Manilow.
6. Caesars Palace
Found on the corner of Flamingo Road and Las Vegas Blvd., Caesars Palace is one of the largest casino venues in the city. Roman-inspired, the property contains not only a hotel and casino, but The Colosseum, one of the most famous music venues in Vegas, where acts including Celine Dion, Frank Sinatra, Cher, Bette Midler, Adele, and Elton John have held residencies. Similarly, the hotel has been known for its high-tier boxing events.
It doesn't end there either-- the Forum Shops at Caesars, a massive mall complex, is a luxury sales destination with the highest average spend of any shopping centre in the United States.
7. The Venetian
Built atop the site of the former Sands Casino & Hotel, The Venetian is one of the many Italian-inspired resorts on the strip, and it's recognizable by its massive grand canal (and interior shopping centre, the Grand Canal Shoppes, inside) and its towers, meant to replicate Doge's Palace.
The Venetian has been known, amongst other things, for its world-class museums (often associated with the Guggenheim), its own Madame Tussaud's, and its connection to the Venetian Congress Center.
8. The Palazzo
Although the Palazzo is attached to the Venetian, this separate structure comes with its own unique traits and quirks. Found at the corner of Sands Avenue and Las Vegas Blvd., it was originally constructed as a companion piece to its neighbour, but upon completion, and with the obvious Italian theming between the two, they went on to form the largest hotel complex in the world (surpassed only a few years later by a Malaysian hotel). For many years, the Palazzo was the tallest building in Nevada; it would be surpassed by the Fontainebleau Las Vegas, further up the boulevard across from Circus Circus.
9. The Sphere
The most expensive venue to be constructed in Las Vegas history upon its opening, the Sphere was built on Sands Avenue behind the Palazzo, but anyone with a good vantage point, even from far away, can't miss what it is-- a massive orb protruding from the ground with a colossal, bright outer shell covered in LED screens.
Inside, what guests will find is the largest spherical arena ever created. It's played host to immersive concert events from U2, Phish, and Eagles; it's hosted specially-designed cinema experiences; it's been a UFC destination.
It opened in 2023.
10. Treasure Island
Sitting at the corner of Spring Mountain Road and Las Vegas Blvd., Treasure Island opened in 1993 next to what was formerly The Mirage (which closed in 2024). Aiming for a guest with less discriminating tastes, it was themed around pirates. The Mirage, by comparison, was a bit less focused on theme, containing a number of animal attractions, a volcano, and one of the largest room counts in the world. Most of the entertainment at Treasure Island is themed around swashbuckling, but it has also contained one of the longest-running Cirque de Soleil shows of all time, "Mystère".
