Thematic Feet Trivia Questions

1. What is the name of the 1989 film which presents the story of Christy Brown?

From Quiz
All About Feet

Answer: "My Left Foot"

Daniel Day-Lewis starred in this film dealing with Christy Brown, a quadriplegic, who could only control his left foot due to cerebral palsy. Daniel Day-Lewis won the Academy Award for best acting. In the film, Brown learns to write and paint with his left foot. Of course, here one needs to remember the left has sometimes been considered socially as not as "normal" as the right side. This makes Brown's achievement all the more memorable.

2. In 2010, the United States was the only industrialized country who had not completely converted to the Metric System. How agonizing would it be to convert "feet" into meters? First you need to know this: how many meters are there in a foot?

From Quiz The Agony of De Feet!

Answer: 0.3048 meters

If you multiply the number of feet you need to convert by 0.3048, you get the measurement in meters. The U.S.A. attempted to adopt the metric system back in 1975. We went so far as to establish a 'United States Metric Board' for the transition; but by the early 1980s, the only progress made was that liquor had to be labeled in liters. We tried again in 1988, when Congress decided that government agencies must try to become metric by 1992. Today, the Department of Defense and NASA are becoming close to being fully converted; while others, like the Department of Education, are still fighting it. They've cited the "rights of each state to make its own decision".

3. A riddle...In what way is Long John Silver like a snail?

From Quiz Footloose

Answer: They each have one foot.

Long John Silver is the one-legged pirate in Treasure Island. Snails and other gastropod molluscs have a single "foot" which they protrude out of their shell for locomotion and/or attachment to a surface. (Some snails live in the sea, but not all. Their feet do not have toes.)

4. How about a medical question? Your physician has just examined your feet and has informed you that you have tinea pedis. What's a more common name for this?

From Quiz Look Ma! No Hands!

Answer: athlete's foot

Athlete's foot is a form of ringworm or a fungus that typically attacks the skin of the feet, particularly around the toes. Few people know, however, that the fungus can spread to other parts of the body and that, if left untreated, a serious enough infection could occur that requires antibiotic treatment. A bunion is a growth of bone or tissue around the joint where the big toe connects with the foot. Club foot is a birth defect that causes one's foot to turn inward at the ankle. .

5. Salman Rushdie, author of 'The Satanic Verses," wrote a book with a title regarding something beneath "her" feet. What is beneath her feet in the title? Note: U2 also has a song with this title.

From Quiz All About Feet

Answer: Ground

Rushdie's 2000 book develops further the Greek Orpheus/Eurydice myth. It had rock music instead of Orpheus' lyre. Toni Morrison called it a "global novel." Later, the book became both a film and a stage presentation (2007). U2 have a song called "The Ground Beneath Her Feet" appearing in the 2000 film "Million Dollar Hotel." Bono developed the song, which Rushdie thought had "some of the most beautiful melodies." Rushdie is the writer who had a death sentence issued by Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khomeinei because of the novel's allegedly "blasphemous" treatment of Islam.

6. Do adult humans' feet keep 'growing' with age?

From Quiz The Agony of De Feet!

Answer: Feet do not 'grow', but appear longer and wider from loss of muscle and connective tissue.

As strange as it may seem, human feet do tend to expand as we age; our arches break down and the foot bones spread out. So, technically they're expanding, not growing. A half size expansion is typical.

7. What is the name of the bone at the back of the foot, which forms the main part of the heel?

From Quiz Footloose

Answer: calcaneus

The metatarsals are the bones across the main part of the foot (between the ankle and the toes). A phalanx is one of the toe (or finger) bones. The tibia is in the lower leg - it is the shin bone. The ankle bones (of which calcaneus is one) are the tarsals.

From Quiz Footloose

Answer: a fungus

There are several different species of fungus that can cause athlete's foot, but the most common ones belong to the genus Trichophyton. 10. Say you are a professional torturer. Which method of torture would you prefer to get the best results (which includes leaving no tracable evidence)?

From Quiz Toenails All Around

Answer: Inserting a sharp and sterile needle underneath the toenail.

If executed properly the insertion of a sharp and sterile needle will leave no mark but will still cause excruciating pain. Pulling the nail or crushing it will certainly hurt like there is no tomorrow but it will also leave marks and that is not a good thing if you are a professional torturer. Filing the toenail until the flesh is just a good way to maintain healthy toenails and doesn't hurt a bit. And uhhh... do I need to add that torture is illegal and should not be executed ever?

From Quiz Footloose

Answer: A human foot is nearly always shorter than 12 inches.

Although the "foot" probably has its historical origins in the length of a human foot, the average length of the human foot (for both women and men) is in fact well below 12 inches. Perhaps this is because the original measurement was of a human foot with a shoe on.

From Quiz Look Ma! No Hands!

Daniel Day-Lewis portrayed him in the 1989 Jim Sheridan film "My Left Foot", a film sharing the same name as Brown's autobiography. Day-Lewis won his first Academy Award for Best Actor in 1990 for his work on the film. Day-Lewis is known for his method acting, and he often refuses to step out of character until his work on a film is completed. Sometimes, such behavior takes a toll on his health.

21. Now, this time, you need to take a clear stance. What do you do? How do you put your foot?

From Quiz All About Feet

Answer: down

29. Finally, let's see how you measure up against this question. In the United States customary units of measurement, one foot is equal to twelve inches and three feet equal one yard, but what do 5,280 feet equal?

From Quiz Look Ma! No Hands!

Answer: a mile

A foot is usually considered .3048 of a meter. The origin of the term and of the precise length is assumed to be that a human foot was frequently used as a standard for measuring. However, the need arose for a consistent length so that "a foot" didn't mean different lengths for different people. Of course, anyone with common sense will quickly argue that most human feet are not 12 inches long. The assumption is that the 12 inches was decided upon after measuring the length of a man's foot with a shoe on it. After all, most people, when measuring with their feet, do so with shod feet. Who takes off his or her shoes to walk heel-toe when measuring?
