Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the 1989 film which presents the story of Christy Brown?

Answer: "My Left Foot"

Daniel Day-Lewis starred in this film dealing with Christy Brown, a quadriplegic, who could only control his left foot due to cerebral palsy. Daniel Day-Lewis won the Academy Award for best acting. In the film, Brown learns to write and paint with his left foot.

Of course, here one needs to remember the left has sometimes been considered socially as not as "normal" as the right side. This makes Brown's achievement all the more memorable.
2. Salman Rushdie, author of 'The Satanic Verses," wrote a book with a title regarding something beneath "her" feet. What is beneath her feet in the title? Note: U2 also has a song with this title.

Answer: Ground

Rushdie's 2000 book develops further the Greek Orpheus/Eurydice myth. It had rock music instead of Orpheus' lyre. Toni Morrison called it a "global novel." Later, the book became both a film and a stage presentation (2007).

U2 have a song called "The Ground Beneath Her Feet" appearing in the 2000 film "Million Dollar Hotel." Bono developed the song, which Rushdie thought had "some of the most beautiful melodies."

Rushdie is the writer who had a death sentence issued by Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khomeinei because of the novel's allegedly "blasphemous" treatment of Islam.
3. Which Donna Summer single became a number-one Billboard success in 2008?

Answer: "Stamp Your Feet"

Born as LaDonna Adrian Gaines aka "the Queen of Disco," Donna Summer released the single "Stamp Your Feet" in 2008. Speaking of feet, her adult contemporary single "Sand On My Feet" got to number 30 on the Adult Contemporary chart in 2008.
In 2009 she was invited to perform at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert for Barack Obama in Oslo, Norway.
4. What is the name of a famous black comedy TV series created by Alan Ball which deals with a family who are morticians?

Answer: Six Feet Under

Literally, to be six feet under means to be dead, to be buried approximately six feet under ground.

"Six Feet Under" is a famous 2001 TV series appearing from 2001-2005 featuring an unusual family that ran a funeral home.

"Six Feet Under" is also the name of a death metal band.
5. What phrase means that a person is capable of thinking alone and independently? A person can be said to do what:--to ___ on one's feet?

Answer: think

A related phrase to this is to stand on your own two feet.
To think on one's feet means that someone can quickly digest information and come up with answers readily, to improvise. There is a short article on line offering advice on "how to think on one's feet like Conan O'Brien."
6. Now, sometimes, without wanting to, you make a mistake. What do you do according to the idiom--you put your foot in your what?

Answer: mouth

To put one's foot in one's mouth means that a person says something wrong, silly or for which one will be embarrassed. For example, "Harry put his foot in his mouth when he said too many details about getting fired during a new job interview."
7. Now, this time, you need to take a clear stance. What do you do? How do you put your foot?

Answer: down

A person puts his/her foot down--as in put it down on the ground hard and decisively. Notice, it is put your foot down and not your feet.
8. Which word best completes the phrase with the idea of not taking a clear position about something: to have a foot in both ___?

Answer: camps

This phrase literally means to be involved with two groups of very different interests or positions. Gradually, if a person is often accused of having her foot in both camps, others will conclude that she has not yet taken a definite position.
9. If you suddenly don't want to do something, you get what kind of feet: to get ___ feet?

Answer: cold

This phrase relating to being scared or stalled appears first according to the "Oxford English Dictionary" in Stephen Crane's famous novella "Maggie: Girl of the Streets."
Some have surmised that the phrase derives from the Italian proverb: "Aver freddo ai piedi" ("to be cold in the feet"). Specialists explain that when talking about gambling this way, it means that a person does not have the money to go on.
10. Which word best completes the title of John Chilton's autobiography, "Hot Jazz,__ Feet"?

Answer: Warm

John Chilton is a British trumpeter and writer. His song, "Give Her A Little Drop More", appeared in "St. Elmo's Fire." He wrote a "Who's Who of Jazz" which was uniformly praised. As a writer and jazz scholar, he is a significant figure.
His autobiography, "Hot Jazz, Warm Feet," was published in 2007.
