Me and My Girl Trivia Questions

1. "Me and My Girl" is about Bill Snibson, a lower-class man from Lambeth who learns that he is of noble lineage and has inherited a fortune. What is the name of his new home?

From Quiz
Going Down To Lambeth

Answer: Hareford Hall

When his father dies he inherits Hareford Hall and the title of Earl of Hareford. Bill's boorish yet benign manner confounds many of the other characters in the show. Eventually Bill becomes refined enough to claim his title.

2. What does Sir John claim killed his aunt?

From Quiz "Me & My Girl": The Wisdom of Sir John Tremaine

Answer: Tea

He's explaining why he refuses to drink tea (see information for the next question). He'd much sooner stick to brandy, and is very often seen a bit... um... "squiffy", as he calls it.

3. Maria, the Duchess of Dene, and Sir John Tremayne are supposed to determine if Bill is fit to rule. What is their relationship?

From Quiz Going Down To Lambeth

Answer: They are childhood sweethearts

All is well that ends well; Sir John and Maria become husband and wife at the end of the show. Maria has gained a reputation as a stern old woman, but Sir John brings out the sweetness in her.

4. What does Sir John reveal to be the actual cause of his aunt's death?

From Quiz "Me & My Girl": The Wisdom of Sir John Tremaine

Answer: a steamroller

In a fantastic scene where both he and Bill are drunk, Parchester, the solicitor, tries to give him tea. Sir John responds with: "What are you trying to do to me?! I had an aunt once who drank tea all her life, dead before she saw fifty! Mind you, the steamroller didn't help matters."

5. Gerald Bolingbroke and Lady Jacquie are another romantic couple in the show. What is one of Jacquie's goal throughout most of the show?

From Quiz Going Down To Lambeth

Answer: To get Bill's money

She attempts to seduce Bill in the musical number "You Would If You Could". At the end of the show she ends up with Gerald, a whiny and somewhat immature nobleman who spends all of his money at the races.

6. According to Sir John what are the Duchess' poodles taking an unhealthy interest in?

From Quiz "Me & My Girl": The Wisdom of Sir John Tremaine

Answer: his ankles

This is part of his first line in the play.

7. Bill has a girlfriend who is at first rejected by the other inhabitants at Hareford Hall. What is her name?

From Quiz Going Down To Lambeth

Answer: Sally Smith

Sally gets rid of her Cockney accent thanks to a few quick language lessons from a professor who has befriended one of Sir John's old military acquaintances. (It is implied to be Henry Higgins of "My Fair Lady".)

8. Complete this quote. When Bill is first being introduced to the family, he is asked what he lives on, to which he replies "My wits." Sir John answers: "You must be __________?"

From Quiz "Me & My Girl": The Wisdom of Sir John Tremaine

Answer: severely undernourished

Sir John really does not like Bill at first, but starts to feel sorry for him and Sally once the Duchess begins to interfere.

9. The Hareford family is assisted by the comic relief, the lawyer Parchester. What is his first name?

From Quiz Going Down To Lambeth

Answer: Herbert

Parchester sings the musical number "The Family Solicitor". He reveals his first name in the middle of Act 2, in the company of a drunk Bill and an equally inebriated Sir John.

10. When Sir John is trying to prevent the Duchess from interfering in Bill and Sally's lives, he starts to protest with the line: "Maria, it has crossed my mind..." What does the Duchess say to interrupt him?

From Quiz "Me & My Girl": The Wisdom of Sir John Tremaine

Answer: Not a long journey

Sorry if those options weren't very good, I got stuck for alternatives, although she does actually say "Do be quiet, you futile man" a few moments before this quote. The Duchess and Sir John are always bickering with each other, but you can tell they really love each other.

11. When Sir John calls the Duchess a "wicked, interfering old bat", what is her answer?

From Quiz "Me & My Girl": The Wisdom of Sir John Tremaine

Answer: I'm impervious to flattery

Again an example of Sir John and the Duchess' relationship. They keep trading insults throughout the show.

12. Which dictator does Sir John think the Duchess resembles?

From Quiz "Me & My Girl": The Wisdom of Sir John Tremaine

Answer: Mussolini

He tells Bill that she's "like Mussolini, but without the charm".

13. Maria, the Duchess of Dene, sings "The Song of Hareford" to Bill in Act 2. What strange thing happens during this song?

From Quiz Going Down To Lambeth

Answer: Portraits of Bill's ancestors come to life

The ancestors even sing and dance in the number, but only Bill can see them! The number of ancestors can be anywhere from four to twelve.

14. During the second garden party, while Bill is composing his speech for the House of Lords, what does Sir John compare the Duchess to when he's talking to Sally?

From Quiz "Me & My Girl": The Wisdom of Sir John Tremaine

Answer: a witch

This leads to a really funny moment in which he stands there repeating the word "witch" and chuckling to himself, only to realise that the Duchess is standing right behind him listening. He recovers with: "Which reminds me, I have to go," and quickly runs away. OK, it's not as funny when you read it, but it's great to watch. He actually compares her to all of the options, but only this one is said to Sally. He calls the Duchess a trout and a bat to her face, and calls her a "hard old battleship" in the scene I mentioned earlier where he and Bill are drunk.

15. Parchester's song, "The Family Solicitor", has how many reprises?

From Quiz Going Down To Lambeth

Answer: Two

"The Family Solicitor" is sung early on in Act One. A reprise occurs later on in Act One, and another reprise happens in the middle of Act Two. Sadly, Parchester is interrupted both times by Maria, The Duchess.

16. Which character from another play is Sir John friends with?

From Quiz "Me & My Girl": The Wisdom of Sir John Tremaine

Answer: Colonel Pickering from 'My Fair Lady'

He mentions this when he explains his plan to turn Sally into a lady that the Duchess will approve of. He never actually says the name, but once he explains the plan and says "an old army friend of mine shares a house with a remarkable chap on Upper Wimpole Street, he's done it before", it becomes clear, especially when he exclaims "By George, she's got it" upon Sally's arrival after her lessons.

17. Towards the end of Act One, at the ball, whom does Lady Worthington-Worthington mistake for Bill?

From Quiz Going Down To Lambeth

Answer: Parchester

This hilarious scene takes place shortly before the rousing Act One closing song, "The Lambeth Walk". It's sung by Bill, Sally, and the rest of the cast.

18. Finally, complete this quote. "The old chap got down on his knees and said in his most sincere voice. I can't ...?"

From Quiz "Me & My Girl": The Wisdom of Sir John Tremaine

Answer: move

He is explaining to the Duchess about a couple he knows who have been in love with each other for thirty years but haven't realised it. It becomes clear that he means himself and the Duchess, but they both realise that the Duchess does not care for him as much as he cares for her. In fact there's a whole song about it.
