"Me & My Girl": The Wisdom of Sir John Tremaine Quiz

I've always loved the character of Sir John; he gets all the best lines. How many of them do you know? (There are also a few that he doesn't actually say, but are responses to his lines.) By the way, they're not in any sort of order.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does Sir John claim killed his aunt?

Answer: Tea

He's explaining why he refuses to drink tea (see information for the next question). He'd much sooner stick to brandy, and is very often seen a bit... um... "squiffy", as he calls it.
2. What does Sir John reveal to be the actual cause of his aunt's death?

Answer: a steamroller

In a fantastic scene where both he and Bill are drunk, Parchester, the solicitor, tries to give him tea. Sir John responds with: "What are you trying to do to me?! I had an aunt once who drank tea all her life, dead before she saw fifty! Mind you, the steamroller didn't help matters."
3. According to Sir John what are the Duchess' poodles taking an unhealthy interest in?

Answer: his ankles

This is part of his first line in the play.
4. Complete this quote. When Bill is first being introduced to the family, he is asked what he lives on, to which he replies "My wits." Sir John answers: "You must be __________?"

Answer: severely undernourished

Sir John really does not like Bill at first, but starts to feel sorry for him and Sally once the Duchess begins to interfere.
5. When Sir John is trying to prevent the Duchess from interfering in Bill and Sally's lives, he starts to protest with the line: "Maria, it has crossed my mind..." What does the Duchess say to interrupt him?

Answer: Not a long journey

Sorry if those options weren't very good, I got stuck for alternatives, although she does actually say "Do be quiet, you futile man" a few moments before this quote. The Duchess and Sir John are always bickering with each other, but you can tell they really love each other.
6. When Sir John calls the Duchess a "wicked, interfering old bat", what is her answer?

Answer: I'm impervious to flattery

Again an example of Sir John and the Duchess' relationship. They keep trading insults throughout the show.
7. Which dictator does Sir John think the Duchess resembles?

Answer: Mussolini

He tells Bill that she's "like Mussolini, but without the charm".
8. During the second garden party, while Bill is composing his speech for the House of Lords, what does Sir John compare the Duchess to when he's talking to Sally?

Answer: a witch

This leads to a really funny moment in which he stands there repeating the word "witch" and chuckling to himself, only to realise that the Duchess is standing right behind him listening. He recovers with: "Which reminds me, I have to go," and quickly runs away. OK, it's not as funny when you read it, but it's great to watch.

He actually compares her to all of the options, but only this one is said to Sally. He calls the Duchess a trout and a bat to her face, and calls her a "hard old battleship" in the scene I mentioned earlier where he and Bill are drunk.
9. Which character from another play is Sir John friends with?

Answer: Colonel Pickering from 'My Fair Lady'

He mentions this when he explains his plan to turn Sally into a lady that the Duchess will approve of. He never actually says the name, but once he explains the plan and says "an old army friend of mine shares a house with a remarkable chap on Upper Wimpole Street, he's done it before", it becomes clear, especially when he exclaims "By George, she's got it" upon Sally's arrival after her lessons.
10. Finally, complete this quote. "The old chap got down on his knees and said in his most sincere voice. I can't ...?"

Answer: move

He is explaining to the Duchess about a couple he knows who have been in love with each other for thirty years but haven't realised it. It becomes clear that he means himself and the Duchess, but they both realise that the Duchess does not care for him as much as he cares for her. In fact there's a whole song about it.
