The novel is set during the time that writer Charles Dickens was active. Dickens is omnipresent in this book: in fact, the main character's name, John Huffam, was part of Dickens' full name. London, so central to Dickens' life and art, was a fascinating place for writer Avi, and he made it a true character of his story.
