Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the town that Asta's son has lived in for the first thirteen years of his life, with his mom?

Answer: Stromford

Stromford is in present-day England. In the book, the landlord of Stromford is Lord Furnival.
2. What is the steward's name in "Crispin"?

Answer: John Aycliffe

John Aycliffe is the steward, meaning he is in charge of Stromford when Lord Furnival is not around (which is pretty much never). He appears many times in the book.
3. The name of the priest in Stromford is Father Quinel.

Answer: True

Father Quinel helps bury Asta's son's mother in the beginning of the book. He is murdered after Asta's son's escape from Stromford for helping Asta's son escape from "theft" when John Aycliffe accuses Asta's son of it. However, Asta's son did not even attempt theft.
4. As Asta's son moves along through his journey, who is the man he runs into in the empty village?

Answer: Bear

Asta's son swears that he will be Bear's servant, and Asta's son must obey, since if he declines, he could be killed on the spot. Asta's son could be killed on the spot because he was declared a "wolf's head" for accusation of theft.
5. Asta's son prays with this item that Bear does not permit him to use after he becomes his slave. What is this item?

Answer: a cross of lead

Where do you think the title "Crispin: The Cross of Lead" comes from? However, even though Bear refuses to allow Asta's son to use this cross, Asta's son uses it anyway.
6. Asta's son's real name is Reginald.

Answer: False

Again, where do you think the title comes from? Asta's son later finds out that his real name is Crispin, and once he tells Bear this, Bear starts to call Asta's son "Crispin."
7. Bear and Crispin arrive in the largest city under Lord Furnival's control. What is the name of this city?

Answer: Great Wexly

This is the city where Lord Furnival's palace is. Bear and Crispin arrive in this city and stay at the Green Man Inn, where Bear's good friend, Widow Daventry, resides. After arriving in Great Wexly, Bear and Crispin soon find out that Lord Furnival's been dead for two weeks now.
8. Crispin runs into someone familiar in the church across from the Furnival palace. Who is the man that Crispin runs into?

Answer: John Aycliffe

After catching sight of Crispin, John Aycliffe runs after him in the city. Luckily for Crispin, John Aycliffe loses him.
9. Who is taken captive, that is close to Crispin?

Answer: Bear

Because Bear is hiding Crispin, he is taken captive by John Aycliffe, who is now in charge of Great Wexly, along with Lady Furnival, Lord Furnival's widow. Crispin tries to save Bear by sneaking into Furnival palace.
10. What does Crispin's cross of lead have engraved on it?

Answer: "Crispin-Son of Furnival"

Crispin finds this out when Widow Daventry tells him to save Bear. Widow Daventry also tells Crispin to leave Great Wexly. Crispin then sets out past curfew and sneaks into the palace. After running into John Aycliffe, Crispin explains to him that he knows what is on his cross of lead. Crispin then puts together that since Asta, his mother, passed, Crispin had to be killed so no one would ever find out that he was the son of Lord Furnival. That's why John Aycliffe accused Crispin of theft-but really no one believed him. Crispin then stabs Aycliffe in the neck, but Aycliffe is not severely injured.

He bleeds, but that's it. Crispin forces John Aycliffe to let Bear go, and John Aycliffe swears that he will set Bear free if the cross of lead is given to him after Crispin and Bear leave Great Wexly. Crispin agrees, and Crispin and Bear are set free.

However, there is a catch, as John Aycliffe breaks his promise and yet still tries to kill Crispin. He fails, and Bear then kills John Aycliffe. Finally, Crispin and Bear leave Great Wexly.
