This comes as a complete shock to everyone, as Hannah believed that she and her husband Eddie were unable to conceive.

Upon their move to their farm in Kent Marcus and Henny decided to buy a flat in Kensington on the assumption that they would always be 'popping' up to London so they would need somewhere to stay. On her second day working for Laurie, Henny accidentally takes three of Marcus' sleeping pills thinking they're painkillers. She manages to make it to work while the pills are kicking in, then Laurie takes her out for lunch to show her the ropes. She decides to order a double gin and tonic thinking that it will perk her up, when naturally it does the opposite. After Henny explains what has happened, Laurie takes her to the flat in Kensington so she can sleep off the pills, but being rather drunk by this time too she drags him up to the bedroom and starts kissing him. Marcus then walks in and catches the two of them. After sleeping off the pills Henny goes home (with no memory of the afternoon) to find the children are staying with friends and Marcus is at a hotel until she can move her things out. After confronting Marcus she finds out what has happened and pleads with him to reconsider. He tells her to leave so she goes and packs her things as he asked. Marcus wouldn't have been kissing Fabrice because Fabrice is a horse.

Kate lives with her husband and children in Putney, and became friends with Imogen (to start with) as a matter of convenience. The two then grew close as their sons became best friends. Daniel Hunter is the headmaster of the village school. He and Eleanor had been having an affair for a while, and Alex (being Eleanor's oldest friend) knew about it. He also knew that she became pregnant by Daniel, but didn't say anything to Imogen. Imogen found this out when she drove around looking for Eleanor's car, having convinced herself of an affair between her and Alex. She found the car, and battered the door and shouted obscenities at the window of the house it stood outside, not knowing whose house it was. She was shocked to find it belonged to Daniel, and that it was in fact he who had been conducting an affair with Eleanor. To add to the situation, Eleanor tells Imogen she is pregnant with Daniel's child, which is why she has been so reliant on Alex.

Sixteen years before the start of the book, Rupert was due to be posted to Hong Kong for three years, so he suggested that they get married before he leaves. Henny and her family are so excited that they don't notice Rupert's lack of enthusiasm. Henny arrived at her wedding to be continually told to drive around the block. She gets out of the car after being told that she has to go home, Rupert never turned up. She had to see for herself that he really hadn't come.

Pat is the (initially surly and rude) local vet, who Imogen calls out regularly. She nearly sparks a huge panic when she calls him out because she suspects that one of her cows has foot-and-mouth, a highly contagious disease in farm animals that calls for all livestock in the vicinity to be slaughtered and destroyed. After finding out that the cow did not, in fact, appear to be infected, he is very irritated with her, but throughout the book softens towards her until it becomes apparent that he has feelings for her. Why else would he help Imogen and Rufus chase cows at 3am?

Henny was actually not all that fond of Hughie, but he was something of a stop-gap until she met the right man. Penny convinced Henny to go to a ball held by Penny's boyfriend Phillip's Batallion, during which she met Rupert. He was part of the same Batallion so felt obligated to attend. They hit it off straight away, he took her for breakfast at a cafe then back to his father's apartment because she couldn't get a cab home. They fell in love the next day.

She also found out that both of his daughters are named Henrietta after her, such was his regret for leaving her at the altar. Emmanuelle was Laurie's assistant before Henny and Pippa is an acquaintance of Henny's married to 'Timid' Timmy.

She leaves to look for Marcus at Perdita's, only to find that her affair was not with Marcus, but with 'Timid' Timmy, Pippa's downtrodden husband. She goes back to the farm where she sees Marcus with the local constabulary thinking that there had been a break-in. They send the policeman away, then have a heart-to-heart where she finds out that Marcus misses her and wants her to come home. She doesn't tell him about Rupert though she asks Benji if she should. He tells her not to as some things are best left unsaid.
