Answer: Imogen

Imogen 'narrates' the story as well as being the main protagonist. She at first appears to be an over-protective, neurotic mother hen, but over the course of the story becomes more likeable and relaxed.

Eleanor and Piers Latimer own the cottage, and let Imogen and Alex move in, ostensibly as a favour to them. Imogen thinks that Eleanor is just trying to keep Alex close so that they can re-ignite their affair from 10 years previously, but how wrong she is.

Hannah goes upstairs because she thinks she has appendicitis, and waits for Imogen to call an ambulance. When Imogen goes back upstairs, she finds her sister flat on her back and naked from the waist down, with the local vet. Naturally she is outraged, until the vet informs her that Hannah is in fact in labour! This comes as a complete shock to everyone, as Hannah believed that she and her husband Eddie were unable to conceive.

Rufus at first is mocked at the village school for having a 'dog name', but after a while makes new friends and settles in very well at the village school. He is a shy boy who loves the animals in the field behind the cottage.

Kate lives with her husband and children in Putney, and became friends with Imogen (to start with) as a matter of convenience. The two then grew close as their sons became best friends.

Hannah is Imogen's sister, Dawn is their father's girlfriend and Sheila one of the other school-run mothers who becomes friendly with Imogen.

Daniel Hunter is the headmaster of the village school. He and Eleanor had been having an affair for a while, and Alex (being Eleanor's oldest friend) knew about it. He also knew that she became pregnant by Daniel, but didn't say anything to Imogen. Imogen found this out when she drove around looking for Eleanor's car, having convinced herself of an affair between her and Alex.

She found the car, and battered the door and shouted obscenities at the window of the house it stood outside, not knowing whose house it was.

She was shocked to find it belonged to Daniel, and that it was in fact he who had been conducting an affair with Eleanor. To add to the situation, Eleanor tells Imogen she is pregnant with Daniel's child, which is why she has been so reliant on Alex.

Pat is the (initially surly and rude) local vet, who Imogen calls out regularly. She nearly sparks a huge panic when she calls him out because she suspects that one of her cows has foot-and-mouth, a highly contagious disease in farm animals that calls for all livestock in the vicinity to be slaughtered and destroyed.

After finding out that the cow did not, in fact, appear to be infected, he is very irritated with her, but throughout the book softens towards her until it becomes apparent that he has feelings for her. Why else would he help Imogen and Rufus chase cows at 3am?

The answer is false. Alex is actually having an affair with Imogen's best friend, and former neighbour, Kate. Imogen finds this out when she goes up to London to see Kate's play and sees that Kate actually dropped out of the play some months ago. She then leaves Alex a message (he is staying in London for work) to meet her in a local bistro, but as she is driving past she sees Alex and Kate coming out of a restaurant and kissing before hailing a taxi.

Imogen initially thinks that Molly is his girlfriend because she is staying at Pat's house. Molly also speaks with an English accent, whereas Pat has a distinct Irish accent. Imogen finds out that this is because Molly was at an English boarding school from a young age. Pat was also sent to boarding school but was expelled, so he grew up in Ireland.

Rufus had previously seen Alex and Kate kissing in the back garden of Kate's house during her son Orlando's seventh birthday party. He told Imogen's father but they agreed to keep it between them until she was ready to find out.
