Donncan and Bronwen are cousins who are both legal heirs to the throne! To settle the kingdom, Lachlan arranged the betrothal between them at a very young age. When Lachlan took over rightful inheritance of the kingdom his son Donncan was then rivalled by his slightly elder cousin Bronwen whose father was Righ of all Eileanan, and brother to Lachlan, and died shortly after her birth. Bronwen and Donncan were once great friends, but began to grow apart as they got older, due mostly to Neil's interference and Bronwen's behaviour. They do love each other dearly but have never fully embraced the fact; their wedding day is not the most romantic day in history, and Donncan barely acknowledges her after they have a fight the night before.

This is how Johanna betrays Iseult, as she takes Donncan her eldest born and plans to use his body to bring Brann back.

Afterward Lewen feels like he has betrayed both Rhiannon and Olwynne because at this stage in the book he and Olwynne have jumped the fire (meaning engaged) and he feels like he has betrayed his love for her. Rhiannon makes a promise that she will save Olwynne just so that she can bring her back so she can break the spell she has over Lewen. Lewen still believes that it is not a spell; Rhiannon isn't fooled.

Lewen goes to Rhiannon and tells her that he no longer loves her, and she is left heartbroken, devastated and most of all alone! :(

Currently only one thigearn is known in existence the prionnsa MacAhern. Rhiannon is a descendant of this highly acclaimed family and this is the reason she tamed Blackthorn.
