In this chapter, Alexis is being kidnapped by the Smith brothers. They are threatening him with a gun and it says "if the pistol was fired, all those precious memories, that he had been storing for the last thirty-two years would be blasted to oblivion". This quotation is from Chapter 1. The Smith brothers are paid by someone who wants to kidnap Fairburn to force him to work on a machine. This can't be good.

2. What did Amy's mother die from?

Two years ago, Amy's mother died of scarlet fever. When most children are at school, Amy is on holiday with her dad on his yacht in his annual Spring cruise around Greece and nearby islands. Normally she wouldn't be allowed to come but her mother's death brought her father loneliness and he was glad to have Amy for company. Unfortunately, little does Amy's father know that this cruise will be his last.

Although James has a car, he doesn't want to get caught driving it so he doesn't let anyone use it making Perry want to get another one.

9. Victor serves James food made by Poliponi; what was so special about the bread?

16. What's the engine size of Uncle Max's car?

The car is a Bamford and Martin Sidevalve, Short Chassis tourer, pretty complicated, no? Uncle Max also mentions that it's a "one-point-five-litre". This refers to the size of the engine.

Monkshood is also commonly known as wolfsbane. All of the others are names of other poisons that John Charnage has. John Charnage is one of Alexis Fairburn's friends but in the end, betrays him (well, actually from the very beginning).

Here, Ugo is commenting on how to conquer the world, starting at Europe, using Julius Caesar capturing Gaul as an example. The English hate the Germans who hate the Russians who hate the Italians who hate the French who hate everyone.

19. When George Hellbore is out hunting with his father and Cleek MacSawney, how far away is the deer?

The red deer was five feet tall. Though George is reluctant to shoot, he manages to in the end and its head becomes a trophy in his father's castle's dining room.

This was stated in James and Pritpal's phone call. Fairburn wasn't exactly an inventor since he was just remaking Babbage's machine and we don't know for sure if Babbage wrote crosswords.

James and Kelly hide in a ditch ,which was fairly deep, then while the lorry driver spoke with the man in the guardhouse, they crept into the back of the lorry. Kelly did this with speed so it was obvious that he was used to these sorts of things.

22. When James is about to swat Ludwig Smith like a fly with a tree branch, after Ludwig talks about how he'll kill James, what does James say?

In the darkness, Ludwig Smith coudn't see what was happening. James blindly bumped into a branch which sent him backwards. James hoped Ludwig wouldn't notice the branch until it was too late.

25. What did Victor do to unintentionally distract Ugo's sister, Jana, who was about to kill James and Amy?

Technically, Victor saved James and Amy's life. Jana wanted to get revenge on James, for some odd reason because he didn't actually destroy the dam, kill Ugo and destroy his palace. James managed to escape with Amy by jumping into the water. When Jana tried to pursue she tripped on the stairs, broke her fingernails on rocks and died on a bed of sea urchins. The Pneumatic Railway was built last century (note that this book wasn't written in the present time) and was designed to carry mail so it wasn't comfortable for passengers. The system failed to function properly and it was abandoned. A man called Nesbitt found it while running from the police; his friends helped him get it running.

29. What did John Charnage survive in a war?

Atomic bombs were used in World War Two and in the story, that hasn't happened yet so that's out of the question. Charnage is saying how tough he is by saying the Smith Brothers and Babushka couldn't kill him and nor could a mortar blast.

This part of the book is twelve years later, when James fought in World War Two. Here, Nazi Germany's military codes were cracked by a team of very intelligent scientists.
