Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What did Amy's mother die from?

Answer: Scarlet fever

Two years ago, Amy's mother died of scarlet fever. When most children are at school, Amy is on holiday with her dad on his yacht in his annual Spring cruise around Greece and nearby islands. Normally she wouldn't be allowed to come but her mother's death brought her father loneliness and he was glad to have Amy for company.

Unfortunately, little does Amy's father know that this cruise will be his last.
2. One Eton boy has done a very noble deed in the past; what is it?

Answer: Saved the Queen from a madman who had a gun

In Chapter 3, it says that "An Eton boy had once saved the life of Queen Victoria when a madman had tried to shoot her". Apparently, Windsor castle was very close to Eton and King George III was a very close friend to the school, talking to the pupils frequently.
3. Zoltan the Magyar can swim.

Answer: False

Ironically, Zoltan, as a sailor, considers swimming bad luck. He says you should fear and respect the sea.
4. Victor serves James food made by Poliponi; what was so special about the bread?

Answer: It was shaped like a car

In James' opinion, it was the strangest food he had seen. Victor treats his food like art, shaping them into images. Along with the bread, there was a bowl of pasta with blue cuttlefish ink. Poliponi comments that you can't eat a Picasso or Michelangelo but you can devour a Poliponi.
5. Why did Victor come to Sardinia?

Answer: To escape

Victor came to Sardinia to escape and for a quiet, peaceful life by the sea. He originally came from Switzerland, a peaceful country. Obviously, life didn't go as expected so Victor fled to Sardinia.
6. Ugo says that the mountain men love to fight, then he says "Prima beveno, poi stringono!". Zoltan obviously knows the language and translates. What does it mean in English?

Answer: "First they drink, then they fight."

Before Ugo says this, he was watching some men wrestling. Unfortunately for James, Perry said that many Eton boys box so Ugo hosts a boxing competiton with the boys. Zoltan chooses James and Ugo chooses Tony Fitzpaine, a school bully who has some issues with James.
7. According to Ugo, who did the Russians hate?

Answer: The Italians

Here, Ugo is commenting on how to conquer the world, starting at Europe, using Julius Caesar capturing Gaul as an example. Caesar made sure that everone else was fighting each other so they would simply ignore him. He says that the tribes got bigger. The English hate the Germans who hate the Russians who hate the Italians who hate the French who hate everyone.
8. A .45 callibre bullet shot from a Thomson sub-machine gun travels at about 820 feet per second.

Answer: False

Here, Ugo's men tried to invade the villagers in their cave who were planning to raid Ugo's palace. One of the most skillful warriors, Calogero, had thrown a knife at a man with a Thomson sub-machine gun at about 80 feet per second. Unfortunately the gunman shot too at 920 feet per second and killed Calogero although his knife still made contact.
9. Just before the massive wave, Ugo said "Ita fua cussu?", meaning "What is this?".

Answer: False

"Ita fua cussu?" actually means "What was that?", the past tense. The massive wave kills Zoltan's men who were about to be executed, but also the execution squad and Ugo. This was said in Chapter 28.
10. What did Victor do to unintentionally distract Ugo's sister, Jana, who was about to kill James and Amy?

Answer: Tried to sit up

Technically, Victor saved James and Amy's life. Jana wanted to get revenge on James, for some odd reason because he didn't actually destroy the dam, kill Ugo and destroy his palace. James managed to escape with Amy by jumping into the water. When Jana tried to pursue she tripped on the stairs, broke her fingernails on rocks and died on a bed of sea urchins.
