Victor Hugo Trivia Questions

1. "Be serious" "I am _______" Which word completes this quote, and which two characters said this?

From Quiz
Les Miserables - Famous Quotes

Answer: savage; Enjolras, Grantaire

In some translations, the quote is "I am wild" instead of "I am savage". This quote is from Volume IV ('Saint Denis'), Book I ('A Few Pages of History'), Chapter VI ('Enjolras and his Lieutenants'). Enjolras is trying to find someone to go to the Barrière du Maine and get the men there to come and fight on the barricade, and Grantaire volunteers. Enjolras immediately refuses, asking if it is possible for Grantaire to be good for anything. Grantaire responds saying he has a vague ambition for it. Enjolras argues that Grantaire believes in nothing, and Grantaire says "I believe in you". After some convincing, Enjolras does let Grantaire go.

2. Which member of the Friends of the ABC has three different names for himself?

From Quiz Friends of the ABC in "Les Miserables"

Answer: Lesgle

The three names are Bossuet, L'Aigle and Lesgle. He is also said to be notoriously unlucky as he started going bald at the age of twenty-five. He is the eldest member of the group and is best friends with Joly.

3. What is the name of the main convict character in this book?

From Quiz Victor Hugo's 'Les Miserables' Characters

Answer: Jean Valjean

All of these are characters in the book. However, only Jean Valjean was a convict. Javert is with the police and is the main character who hunts Jean Valjean.

4. "It is your [blank] that I am buying for you."- Bishop

From Quiz Quotes from "Les Miserables"

Answer: soul

"I am withdrawing it from dark thoughts and from the spirit of perdition, and I am giving it to God!" This is a really important line from the story, as the Bishop's mercy is what ultimately sets Valjean on the path to greatness. I felt it was essential to include it in this quiz- after all, without it, there wouldn't be a story!

5. In the musical there is never any real mention of Jean Valjean's family. Is his family mentioned in the book?

From Quiz "Les Miserables" - Book vs. Musical - Jean

Answer: Yes, his sister and her children play small parts

Jean Valjean never married. He had a sister, who was a widow, with several young children. He looked after them, but they never had enough to eat. One day he stole a loaf of bread to feed them. He was caught and sent to jail and he never heard from them again.

6. The Bishop provides the major catalyst by which Valjean's life is turned around. Is this:

From Quiz Victor Hugo's "Les Miserables" : Book v. Musical

Answer: In Both

Ultimately, it is the Bishop's kindness (expressed through the gift of the candlesticks and his lying to the Police) that has a significant impact on Valjean. There is a major difference between book and musical though in that Hugo devotes the first 100 pages or so to the Bishop and his charitable activities and this before he's even met Valjean. The figure is based upon a real-life Bishop of Digne who was equally well known for his love and compassion for the poor. I'm indebted to teammate doublemm for pointing out that 24601 is both Valjean's number as a prisoner and that of Sideshow Bob in the Simpsons.

7. Where in the novel does Javert first appear?

From Quiz Javert, Inspector First Class

Answer: In Montreuil-sur-Mer, as the police-inspector.

Although many - if not all - of the movie adaptations introduce Javert in Toulon, Hugo did otherwise. Javert appears in the chapter titled "Flickers on the Horizon". He has arrived at Montreuil-sur-Mer after Valjean, but before Valjean's appointment as Mayor. It is said in the novel that he owes his appointment to the influence of the Paris Prefect.

8. Who is a hypochondriac?

From Quiz Les Amis of Les Miserables

Answer: Joly

"Joly was a youthful malade imaginaire. Such medicine as he had learned had made him more a patient than a doctor. At twenty-three he considered himself a chronic invalid and he spent his life inspecting his tongue in the mirror." - Book Four, Chapter I, 'A group which nearly became historic'.

9. What other book did Victor Hugo write?

From Quiz Les Miserables

Answer: The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Hugo wrote "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." Leroux wrote "The Phantom of The Opera." Dumas wrote "The Count of Monte Cristo. " Flaubert wrote "Madame Bovary."

10. What other famous novel did Victor Hugo write?

From Quiz The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Answer: Les Miserables

"The Count of Monte Cristo" was written by Alexandre Dumas. "The Phantom of The Opera" was written by Gaston Leroux. "Madame Bovary" was written by Gustave Flaubert.

11. Who is the first character that appears in the book?

From Quiz "Les Miserables" by Victor Hugo

Answer: Bishop Myriel

The first chapter of the book talks about the life of Charles François Bienvenu Myriel, Bishop of Digne.

12. For whom does Pierre Gringoire write the morality play in Book I-'The Play?'

From Quiz The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Answer: Madame Margaret of Flanders

Gringoire's first play is written in honor of the marriage of the Dauphin of Paris and Margaret Flanders.

13. What was the name of one of the convicts recognising Champmathieu as Jean Valjean?

From Quiz "Les Miserables" Forever

Answer: Chenildieu

"It shall please the court to summon once more into this place the convicts Brevet, Cochepaille, and Chenildieu, and Police-Inspector Javert, and question them for the last time as to the identity of the prisoner with the convict Jean Valjean."

14. Why did Dom Claude Frollo name the child he found 'Quasimodo'?

From Quiz Hugo's Hunchback of Notre Dame

Answer: Because he found the child on 'Quasimodo Sunday'

While some speculate it was cruel allusion to his looks, Frollo named him that because he found him on Quasimodo Sunday

15. We'll start off with the Friends of the ABC: he writes poems, he's timid but courageous, and he plays the flute.

From Quiz Les Miserables Obscure Characters

Answer: Jean Prouvaire

16. Name the character: Main character of "Les Miserables", he also uses the name of Mr.Madeleine.

From Quiz Characters From 'Les Miserables'

Answer: Jean Valjean & Jean ValJean & Jean Val Jean

17. "And then, do you know, _______ _______, I believe I was a little in love with you." What name completes this quote, and who said it?

From Quiz Les Miserables - Famous Quotes

Answer: Monsieur Marius; Eponine

This quote is from Volume IV ('Saint Denis'), Book XIII ('Marius Enters the Shadow'), Chapter VI ('The Agony of Death After the Agony of Life'). This was the last thing Eponine said before she died in Marius' arms on the barricade where she had gone, disguised as a man, so that she could die with Marius and be the one to guide him to heaven.

18. In the book there is a list of the Friends. Who is listed last?

From Quiz Friends of the ABC in "Les Miserables"

Answer: Grantaire

The order is "Enjolras, Combeferre, Jean Prouvaire, Feuilly, Courfeyrac, Bahorel, Lesgle or L'Aigle and Grantaire." Enjolras is listed first as he was the leader. Combeferre is listed second as he was second in command and Grantaire is listed last as he was the sceptic who didn't believe in the cause and often scoffed at it.

19. Who was the leader of the 'Friends of the ABC'?

From Quiz Victor Hugo's 'Les Miserables' Characters

Answer: Enjolras

Enjolras was the leader of this revolutionary movement. Other key members are Combeferre, Courfeyrac(who introduced Marius into the group), and Grantaire. Gustave Flaubert wrote 'Madame Bovary'.

20. "You have [blank] this woman."- Valjean to Javert

From Quiz Quotes from "Les Miserables"

Answer: killed

I like to think that this particular quote might have had some impact on Javert's choice at the end of the story. If he'd remembered these words, don't you think, that he being the officer he was, might have been unable to live believing he'd murdered Fantine?

21. In the musical we first see Javert releasing Jean Valjean from prison. What is he doing the first time we see him in the book?

From Quiz "Les Miserables" - Book vs. Musical : Javert

Answer: Working as an inspector

When we first see him, he catches a glance of Jean Valjean, and recognises him. However Javert does not know where he remembers him from, yet.

22. According to both versions, Jean Valjean steals a loaf of bread and goes to prison. After getting out of prison, what else does he steal?

From Quiz "Les Miserables" - Book vs. Musical - Jean

Answer: Silverware

He steals the Bishop's silverware and gets caught. However, the Bishop tells the police that he had given Jean Valjean the silver. He also tells Jean Valjean to take the silver candlesticks so that he can start again.

23. According to the book, two of the major characters are related; however, this is left out of the musical. Who are they and how are they related?

From Quiz "Les Miserables" - Book vs. Musical

Answer: Eponine and Gavroche are brother and sister

Eponine and Gavroche are brother and sister, we learn this in the book when Eponine tells Marius not to tell her brother (Gavroche) she was dying because he would scold. They also have two parents Thenardier and Madame Thenardier, who are in both versions, and three other siblings (a sister called Azelma, and two brothers); however, none of these are in the musical.

24. Many of the events take place in the French town of Montreuil-Sur-Mer. Interpreted strictly in terms of Hugo's original, is this:

From Quiz Victor Hugo's "Les Miserables" : Book v. Musical

Answer: In the Musical

I did say that I would be strict with you because the name is never completely revealed in the book, only as M. sur M. Some English translations do insert the name but shouldn't as Hugo never connected the two. Naturally, the good folk of Montreuil-Sur-Mer have claimed the reference as theirs and the musical follows their lead but based on little more than Hugo having once stayed there briefly.

25. Javert is a man of mystery. We are told very little about his background and his childhood. As far as the novel tells us, what do we know of where he was born and who his parents were?

From Quiz Javert, Inspector First Class

Answer: Javert was born in prison. His mother was a gypsy, and his father was a criminal.

Victor Hugo spends only a couple of paragraphs on Javert's past. He tells us that Javert was born to a fortune-teller whose husband was in the galleys. Javert grew up in the galleys, conscious of the fact that he had only two choices of profession open to him. He could become a predator on society like his father, or a protector of society. He chose the latter. It is rather odd that Hugo does not spend more time on Javert's heritage. As a half-gypsy, he would have experienced a certain ammount of racial prejudice in that time period.

26. Who gives Marius a hand with lodgings?

From Quiz Les Amis of Les Miserables

Answer: Courfeyrac

"Courfeyrac got into the cab and directed the driver to the Hôtel de la Porte Saint-Jacques. By the evening Marius was installed in that hotel, in a room next to Courfeyrac's own." - Book Four, Chapter II, 'A funeral oration'.

27. What does Jean Valjean steal from the Bishop of D---?

From Quiz Les Miserables

Answer: Silver Dinnerware

Jean Valjean gets caught with the dinerware and is taken back to the Bishop. The Bishop being kind as he is, reprimads Jean for not taking the candlesticks as well and tells the police that he gave it all to Jean.

28. The play Pierre Gringoire wrote for the Festival of Fools was titled what?

From Quiz The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Answer: The Wise Decision of Our Lady The Virgin

Sadly, the play was never preformed.

29. After meeting the Bishop, Jean Valjean steals a coin from a little boy. What is the boy´s name?

From Quiz "Les Miserables" by Victor Hugo

Answer: Gervais

The last criminal action of Jean Valjean is this crime. After that, the deep change in his soul begins.

30. Esmeralda saves Gringoire from being hanged in the Court of Miracles by offering to marry him. Clopin throws down a pot and it breaks into four pieces- what does this symbolize?

From Quiz The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Answer: The number of years for which they will be married

Yes, it means they must be married for four years. I'm sure Gringoire was hoping for a little longer than that. Unfortunately, a marriage of four years wasn't necessary.
