Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why did Dom Claude Frollo name the child he found 'Quasimodo'?

Answer: Because he found the child on 'Quasimodo Sunday'

While some speculate it was cruel allusion to his looks, Frollo named him that because he found him on Quasimodo Sunday
2. Who married La Esmeralda in the beginning of the book?

Answer: Pierre Gringroire

Pierre assumed that La Esmeralda must be desperately in love with him, and was devastated when La Esmeralda refused to consummate the marriage. No matter, by the end of the book, he was more fond of the goat than of La Esmeralda.
3. What is the name of Dom Claude's 16 year old brother?

Answer: Jehan

They were quite the opposite. Jehan was wild and always losing his books and always spending money.
4. What is Frollo obsessed with that helps confirm his reputation of being a 'sorcerer' to the villagers?

Answer: alchemy

He constantly studies different methods and his main reason for capturing gypsies and torturing them is to try to force the spell for alchemy out of them.
5. In one of the chapters, Phoebus is compared to crystal while Quasimodo is compared to what?

Answer: Earthenware

Although the crystal is cracked and the flowers die, Esmeralda chooses it over the steady earthenware because it is pretty. Stupid girl.
6. Why does La Esmeralda remain pure?

Answer: For the amulet that will help her find her parents

She's willing to give it all up for Phoebus, who she thinks loves her.
7. How does Claude Frollo's brother die?

Answer: Quasimodo kills him

During the mob, Jehan meets Quasimodo, and then laughs in his face. Quasimodo, enraged, throws the boy against the wall and Jehan is immediately killed.
8. What does La Esmeralda cry in a last ditch attempt to get someone to help her from the completely love (lust?) stricken Dom Claude Frollo?

Answer: 'Vampire! Vampire!'

She eventually finds the whistle that makes Quasimodo come running.
9. How does Dom Claude Frollo die?

Answer: He falls from Notre Dame

Moments after witnessing Frollo's death, Quasimodo sees La Esmeralda be hanged and cries 'All that I have loved!'
10. What is Phoebus' fate at the end of the novel?

Answer: He gets married

Yes, everyone in the book dies, and Phoebus, probably the least likeable character (at least Jehan has a sense of humor and Dom Claude generates some sympathy) gets off with just getting married.
