Timothy Zahn Trivia Questions

1. Throughout the "Thrawn Trilogy", the Grand Admiral himself was never a point-of-view character, so we never got to read the inner workings of his mind. Which character was the primary point-of-view character for observing Thrawn's genius?

From Quiz
"The Last Command" Part 2

Answer: Captain Pelleaon

Pelleaon had a long history in the navy, both for the Republic and the Empire. He became the captain of Thrawn's flagship, the Chimera. He was a capable officer, but still had trouble keeping up with Thrawn's insights and plans. He was often amazed when Thrawn's intuition turned out to be correct. Pealleaon would go on to become an Admiral himself. Where Thrawn studied his enemies' art, Pelleaon took up gardening for similar insights. After Disney acquired "Star Wars" and reset the canon, they hired Timothy Zahn to write a new trilogy of books to introduce Thrawn to the new canon (twenty-six years later!). In the new series, Thrawn himself was a viewpoint character.

2. Joruus C'Baoth was partnered with Grand Admiral Thrawn, but he was becoming more powerful and independent. He used the Force to coerce Captain Pelleaon to approve what personal project?

From Quiz "The Last Command" Part 1

Answer: Creating a special clone

C'Baoth had Pelleaon use his clearance to approve a special clone project without alerting Grand Admiral Thrawn. C'Baoth then made sure that Pelleaon would not remember authorizing the project. Thrawn made sure that he was personally always in a ysalamir field, but obviously security leaks still happened when other high-ranking officers met C'Baoth outside of one.

3. At Paragrine's Nest, Garm Bel Iblis' base, Han Solo and Lando Calrissian were looking for clues. They went back to the bar, and Han distracted the barkeeper by being a fussy customer while Lando snuck in the back room. What did Lando find?

From Quiz "Dark Force Rising" Part 2

Answer: A full slave rig

The Katana Fleet was famously linked together using a slave rig, which meant a commander from the helm of the flag ship could remotely control any other ship. The presence of a full slave rig in Bel Iblis' base would confirm that his six Dreadnaughts had originally been part of the fleet. The fleet's crew were driven insane and killed by a hive virus, losing the fleet in deep space for decades. A beckon call was a device used by ship owners to make their ships fly in a straight line towards them. Luke found one in the previous novel, and Lando's ship had one installed.

4. What was the object called that Luke and Mara went to negotiate the return of?

From Quiz "Survivor's Quest" by Timothy Zahn

Answer: Outbound Flight

Luke and Mara were sent a message telling them to go to a Chiss controlled world in the unknown regions. The message never reached them, Dean Jinzler stole it at a comm station so he would know where to look for Outbound Flight. Luke and Mara had to track down the guy who sent it, find out what it said, and go then to Outbound Flight.

From Quiz The "Heir To The Empire" Trilogy's Smugglers

Answer: Talon Karrde

Talon Karrde had a ship called "The Wild Karrde". He had an cold and calculating sense of humour, a general moral indifference, and lots of style. He was different from most criminal bosses because he actually cared for his employees' and guests' wellbeing, providing they were loyal. I always imagined him being played by Robert De Niro.

15. Princess Leia, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Chewie, and Lando Calrissian all agreed that they needed to track down Thrawn's Mt. Tantiss facility on their own. Why did they not tell anyone else?

From Quiz "The Last Command" Part 2

Answer: To avoid tipping off the Empire via Delta Source

The New Republic still had a leak somewhere in the Imperial Palace that was transmitting data to Thrawn. Even though they had trusted friends in the government, anything could be overheard. They contained their discussions to their private apartments, and then slipped out on the Millennium Falcon without telling anyone.

16. Grand Admiral Thrawn was a master of manipulation and illusion. During his attack on the planet Ukio, what illusion did he manage to pull off?

From Quiz "The Last Command" Part 1

Answer: Shooting through the planetary shield

Thrawn had Dreadnaughts equipped with cloaking devices sneak through the shield during normal traffic hours. Then, his Star Destroyer showed up. It bombarded the shield, with the Dreadnaughts hiding just beneath it. The Dreadnaughts fired in sync with the blasts, creating the illusion of firing unimpeded through the shield. This coordination was only possible with the crews of the Dreadnaughts controlled by C'Baoth through the Force.

17. Sena and Irenez caught Lando snooping, and he and Han were guided into a speeder at gunpoint. Instead of a reprimand, though, Sena asked for a favour. What did she ask Han and Lando to do?

From Quiz "Dark Force Rising" Part 2

Answer: Ask Mon Mothma to let Bel Iblis join the New Republic

Garm Bel Iblis was a founder of the Rebel Alliance, but left early on when he became suspicious of Mon Mothma's ambitions. Mothma turned out to be a noble leader, but Bel Iblis was too proud to ask to rejoin. He was open to rejoining the New Republic, but he wanted to be officially asked to do so. Bel Iblis would appear in the 2008 video game "The Force Unleashed", which featured the founding of the Rebellion.

18. Thrawn had actually guessed where Karrde was, but was feigning ignorance until his trap could be set. What saved Karrde from Thrawn's trap?

From Quiz "Dark Force Rising" Part 1

Answer: Mara Jade sensed the trap with the Force

Mara had tried to suppress her connection to the Force after the Emperor was killed. The Force helped her find Luke Skywalker in deep space in the previous novel, and helped her escape Thrawn here. She was not happy about it, and dreaded the eventual return of the associated nightmares.

19. During Han's Sabacc game with Torve, a reverend approached the table and accused Han of being a cheater for using a skifter (an illegal card). Who was responsible for the skifter?

From Quiz "Heir to the Empire" Part 2

Answer: The reverend

Han, Torve, and the dealer were each scanned, but the results were negative, meaning they were not cheating. The reverend, who was not even in the game and called attention to it, was Torve's contact. He had planted the skifter to distract security from Torve, the smuggler with something to actually hide.

20. Late at night, Luke Skywalker was awoken by Force ghosts on Coruscant. To clear his mind, he stepped outside with a beverage introduced to him by Lando Calrissian. What was Luke drinking?

From Quiz "Heir to the Empire" by Timothy Zahn Part 1

Answer: Hot Chocolate

"Heir to the Empire" really kicked off the "Star Wars" publishing craze. Before this, a lot of minor details were left blank, such as what kind of warm drink someone might have on a cold Coruscant night. Instead of creating yet another new word, Timothy Zahn went with simple hot chocolate.

21. What is the the name of the man who originally sent Luke and Mara the message that got intercepted, and what political power is he affiliated to?

From Quiz "Survivor's Quest" by Timothy Zahn

Voss Parck also sent the elite storm trooper unit to help them out as well. He is mentioned a few times in this book, mainly near the beginning, although he is also mentioned in the scene where Formbi explains the entire plan about luring the Vagaari into attacking. If you have read the "Hand of Thrawn" books you should have gotten this one a bit easier,if you haven't read them, you still could have gotten it. The Empire of the Hand is an empire formed out of Thrawn's secret base. You don't really hear that much about it after this book, but it's pretty cool.
