Odd Thomas Series Trivia Questions

1. "Odd Hours" - In which coastal town did Odd find himself trying to save the world, and a woman named Annamarie?

From Quiz
Being Odd, Part 2

Answer: Magic Beach

Odd, Boo and Frank Sinatra had been in Magic Beach for about a month. Odd had spent the time working for an old actor named Hutch. There he also met Annamarie, a young pregnant woman, who was in danger. He agreed to die for her if need be, and in the meantime had to thwart an extensive terrorist plan to use nuclear weapons on four major US cities. Along the way, Odd was forced to kill at least six people. He also made new friends, including a dog named Murphy (a name which Odd changed to Raphael) and an old lady named Birdie. Whiskey Beach was the setting for the Nora Roberts' novel of the same name, Hogsmeade was the town adjacent to Hogwarts in the "Harry Potter" series, and Liberty City was the setting for the video game "Grand Theft Auto 4".

2. In the first book of the series, simply called "Odd Thomas", Odd revealed he was in love with Stormy Llewellyn. What did he admit was her real first name?

From Quiz Being Odd

Answer: Bronwen

She liked Stormy better because she felt it sounded less like the name of an Elf than Bronwen. Odd admitted that his real first name was Odd. He explained that he and Stormy were soul mates destined to be together because of two things. One was that a fortune teller's card had said they'd be together forever and the second reason was that they had matching birthmarks. He later found out that her birthmark was actually a tattoo.

6. "Odd Hours" - Which two much-needed items did Birdie Hopkins give Odd to help him survive the night?

From Quiz Being Odd, Part 2

Answer: Gun and cellphone

Birdena "Birdie" Hopkins had developed a psychic twinge of her own after the death of her husband several years earlier. She'd found herself drawn to people who needed her, good people she'd said, and that night it had led her to Odd. She gave him those two crucial items and drove him to the harbor. He'd been chased by a crooked cop and gotten lost. He'd later be taken into custody by that same bad man. After the gun had served its purpose, he tossed it into the ocean, never to be traced back to her. At the end of his journey, he called her to let her know he'd made it out alive. Odd's boss and pal, Hutch, had given him money and a car. His friend Blossom, who'd also housed Annamarie for the night, gave them food and promised to join them on their adventure soon. Hutch also agreed to get rid of Odd's clothes for him.

7. In book one we met Odd's good friend and writer Little Ozzie Boone. Ozzie had a big orange cat named what?

From Quiz Being Odd

Answer: Terrible Chester

Odd went to visit Little Ozzie in book one after he'd had the crazy time shifting encounter at Fungus Man's house. Ozzie had also experienced some trauma that day by way of someone detonating a bomb at his house. The bomb had destroyed his beloved plastic cow, which Ozzie had preserved for years as a piece of lawn art. While at Ozzie's, Terrible Chester had expressed hostility at the presence of Fungus Man (Robert 'Bob' Robertson) outside. This led Odd to try and chase the weird man down. Odd had also discovered earlier in the day that Bob Robertson had an extensive collection of research on serial killers. He had posters of Charles Manson, Mohammed Atta and Timothy McVeigh inside his house. A bodach is one of the creatures that Odd will see when an impending large tragedy is imminent. Krevlornswath, also known as Lorne or The Host, appeared for four seasons on "Angel" and was played by Andy Hallett.

8. What were the titles of the first two sequels to 'Odd Thomas'?

From Quiz The 'Odd Thomas' Series

Answer: 'Forever Odd' & 'Brother Odd'

'Forever Odd' was published in 2005 and 'Brother Odd' was published in 2006 in the UK. Koontz wrote these two sequels due to the extremely high rating from critics towards his first book. There are another two books after these. 'Brother Odd' begins seven months after the previous book; in it, Thomas befriends a dog which sticks with him throughout further adventures. It is at the end of this book that one ghost leaves as another replaces it.

10. What special gift does Odd Thomas have?

From Quiz Are you an "Odd" fan?

11. "Odd Hours" - Instead of using 'Odd', he gave an alias to both Birdie and Police Chief Hoss Shackett. What was it?

From Quiz Being Odd, Part 2

Answer: Harry Lime

In the case of the very corrupt sociopath Hoss Shackett, Odd had not planned on the depth of misleading that occurred. Odd had shared or transferred a vision to both Utgard Rolf (chin beard guy) and Shackett. This vision sharing was of the planned nuclear bombing that they were involved in orchestrating, so Shackett believed Odd to be psychic. Odd took advantage of the man's assumption about that, and the fact that the police chief believed him to be working for the government. He "admitted" to being the covert operative Harry Lime, having received a special psychic power-inducing drug, and being willing to take a bribe to look the other way. What he actually did was all that was within his power, and that was to incite Frank Sinatra into a poltergeist-like rage tornado. It freed him from custody. At the end of the book, Odd left town with Annamarie, Boo, Frank and their new (and alive) pet, Raphael the Golden Retriever. Milo Minderbinder was a character in "Catch-22" by Joseph Heller, Tom Ripley was from "The Talented Mr. Ripley" by Patricia Highsmith, and Bill Sikes was from "Oliver Twist" by Charles Dickens. Orson Welles played the character Harry Lime in the 1949 film "The Third Man".

12. Which terrible loss did Odd suffer at the end of book one, "Odd Thomas"?

From Quiz Being Odd

Answer: Stormy died

Dead Elvis also appeared in Charlaine Harris' "Southern Vampire" series. He was a vampire in those books, but a ghost in Odd's world. Ghosts did not speak in Odd's world, but they could communicate with him in other ways. He had been able to help some of them cross over into the next realm. In book one, Elvis did not cross over, but remained with Odd after Stormy's death. Stormy died in both the book and the film. She was played by actress Addison Timlin, who also appeared on the TV series "Californation" and "Zero Hour". The fabulous Anton Yelchin played Odd. He was also in the films "Terminator Salvation" and the remake of "Fright Night".

13. What was the fourth book in the series called?

From Quiz The 'Odd Thomas' Series

Answer: Odd Hours

14. What is Odd's girlfriend's REAL first name?

From Quiz How "Odd" are you?

Answer: Bronwen

She likes Stormy because she thinks Bronwen makes her sound like an elf.

15. What does Odd see that flock to future scenes of destruction?

From Quiz Are you an "Odd" fan?

Answer: bodachs

He sees bodachs. He describes them as ink-black fluid creatures that float. They have appendages but are not human-looking; they look more like wolves or dogs. The more that are in one area, the worse the devastation. They come in through keyholes, chimneys, and cracks in doorways. He calls them bodachs because a little boy said he saw them too (calling them by this name) ... then was hit by a truck.

16. "Odd Interlude" - Where did Odd's psychic magnetism lead him in this story?

From Quiz Being Odd, Part 2

Answer: Harmony Corner

The full title of this digital three party story is "Odd Interlude: A Special Odd Thomas Adventure", and the time frame is just 24 hours after the ordeal in Magic Beach. Harmony Corner's a small stretch of business and family off of the Coast Highway. The three incorrect choices are locations in Stephen King novels.

From Quiz The 'Odd Thomas' Series

18. Who is Odd's famous (and dead) overemotional haunt?

From Quiz How "Odd" are you?

19. In what season does "Brother Odd" take place?

From Quiz Are you an "Odd" fan?

Answer: winter

There are many, many references to the weather in this novel. Many times he talks about the snow and ice. Once, a nun griped about Odd coming through the room with his wet boots on.

20. "Odd Interlude" - What's the name of the 12 year old girl who helped Odd kill Dr. Hiskott?

From Quiz Being Odd, Part 2

Answer: Jolie

Jolie Ann Harmony was in danger. She'd started hiding out from the mind control of the alien/human hybrid Dr. Norris Hiskott. She led Odd out of Harmony Corner via a former storm drain and explained about the last five years. The doctor worked at Fort Wyvern (an allusion to Area 51), a military base/experimental government facility. While working on an alien craft and its inhabitants, Hiskott injected himself with alien DNA. He escaped the facility-wide lockdown and came to Harmony Corner. Three days later, he'd transformed into a serpentine monster and hid inside one of the family homes. One new aspect of his hybridization was being able to read and control minds. He'd committed awful intrusions upon the Harmony clan, including forcing them to murder. Callie, Khloe, and Sofie are three lovely sisters I know.

21. By the end of book one, Odd had surmised that he may have inherited his ability to see dead people from which family member?

From Quiz Being Odd

Answer: His aunt, Cymry

In book one, Odd established that none of his family members had known of his gift. His mom had her own special kind of mental issues, described to sound somewhat like borderline personality disorder. She had been emotionally unavailable to him throughout his life, and had threatened to kill herself in front of him many times. His father was a narcissist who refused to act his age, and that left the mysterious sister of his mom, Aunt Cymry. He'd never met her, and reports of her location were vague and inconsistent, but by the end of the book he concluded that she could possibly be locked away somewhere having the same "gift" as he'd been given. The film described his mom as being locked up by the time he was seven years old and no mention of Cymry. Carl, Shane and Daryl are all characters from the TV show "The Walking Dead".

22. What is the main character able to do?

From Quiz The 'Odd Thomas' Series

Answer: See the spirits of the dead

Throughout the series, he is visited by various different dead icons. As I said earlier, he is visited in the book 'Odd Apocalypse' by Alfred Hitchcock. He is able to make himself heard to the various ghosts he sees; however, he cannot hear them. However, they do occasionally make signs or mouth movements to convey something.

23. What did Odd do for a living?

From Quiz How "Odd" are you?

Answer: Fry cook

He thought it was his calling.

24. "Odd Interlude" - Inside the military base, Odd's young friend encountered a cooperative artificial intelligence. It'd been named Aladdin, but what did it call itself?

From Quiz Being Odd, Part 2

Answer: Ed

Since the facility closing, Aladdin had been left in charge of security. Any human who'd been locked inside had long since died. One thing Ed was guarding was a massive alien sphere recovered with the alien spacecraft. Ed engaged Jolie in conversation, revealed it was not human, and helped her and Odd defeat Norris Hiskott, whom it knew all about. Ed explained that it had picked its own name, disliking the Aladdin reference. In the end, Odd was able to kill the hybrid. The town rejoiced quietly, burned down the house in which Hiskott lived, and said goodbye to Odd. Annamarie told Jolie to send her part of the story to Odd, via Ozzie Boone, and it would be included in the manuscript. This made Jolie very happy. The story ended with Odd, Annamarie, and the two dogs on their way to Roseland. And, the incorrect choices are characters from the TV series "Supernatural".

25. In book two, "Forever Odd", we found out that Odd had a long time friend named Danny Jessup. Danny suffered from which debilitating congenital disorder?

From Quiz Being Odd

Answer: Osteogenesis Imperfecta - brittle bone disease

Odd had known Danny since childhood, and in "Forever Odd" had to try and find Danny before he was seriously hurt. Danny's recently departed step-father came to Odd after being murdered in his home. Odd and the Chief had to look for Danny because his life hung in a precarious balance. The prime suspect was Danny's biological father Simon, who'd recently been released from a long prison term for manslaughter.

26. Whose ghost was Odd Thomas' friend throughout until the end of 'Brother Odd'?

27. Who is Odd's overweight writer friend?

From Quiz How "Odd" are you?

Answer: P. Oswald Boone

28. Name the boy who keeps sketching his mother.

29. "Odd Apocalypse" - Odd and Annamarie were staying at a "time managed" estate called Roseland. In what year had Roseland been built?

From Quiz Being Odd, Part 2

Answer: 1920

Roseland, at first, was deeply mysterious to Odd. They'd traveled there on his psychic intuition and garnered an invitation to stay by means of Annamarie's unique powers of persuasion. It was built in 1920 by a wealthy movie magnate named Cloyce Constantine. He had been married to a woman named Madra at the time, and told her it was just a coastal getaway. It was so much more than that. The entire estate was one huge time-controlled device. The people who lived there were able to stay young forever, but not without consequences such as homicidal boredom and grotesque visitors from the future.

30. In "Forever Odd", Odd used his psychic magnetism to find his missing friend Danny. Where did it lead Odd, and who had taken Danny?

From Quiz Being Odd

Answer: Panamint Resort and Casino - a woman named Datura

In the time after Stormy's death, Odd had fallen into seclusion. Where he'd previously been there for Danny, he was unable to support his long time friend after Stormy died. Danny's own mom had died of cancer, and his step-father had not been enough emotional support. So, Danny turned to phone sex lines for companionship. This was how he met Datura. She was a deeply disturbed woman, but also powerfully commanding. She found out about Odd's abilities from Danny and used that psychic pull to lead him to a resort/casino burned out five years earlier in the aftermath of earthquakes. She wanted Odd's ti bon ange for herself. That term, 'ti bon ange', means "little good angel". It is described as "the essence of a person, the portrait of the individual, the sum of their life's choices, actions and beliefs". She believed in dark magic and that Odd was a witch doctor. The name Datura refers to a poisonous plant, sometimes called angel's trumpets, and sharing that name with the Brugmansia. Early in the book, the Brugmansia tree, or Tree of Death, played a part in the story. Datura, over confident and fully insane, met her maker at the hands of a mountain lion prowling the casino area for food.
