Soul Music Trivia Questions

1. In 'Soul Music', who was Susan's headmistress?

From Quiz
Terry Pratchett's 'Soul Music'

Answer: Miss Butts

Susan's headmistress has to write notes to herself to remember she was interviewing Susan Sto Helit, but she still forgets. Miss Cumber was one of the teachers that complained that Susan made herself invisible. I'm afraid that Miss Bumms and Miss Rears are my 'humorous' takes on the words 'Butts'.

2. The D'reg word for "stranger" is the same as for which word?

From Quiz 'Soul Music' Random Questions

Answer: Target

The D'regs are a "collection of cheerfully warlike nomadic tribes" which feature only slightly in this book during an attack on the Klatchian Foreign Legion fort. They come to their own in 'Jingo'. Although the U.U. wizards are featured in this book, Rincewind is not part of the cast of characters.

3. What answer did Death give when the holy man asked him what infinite looked like?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Soul Music'

Answer: It's blue

He also informed him that the sound of one hand clapping was 'cl', with the other hand making the 'ap'.

4. According to Death, what was the colour of the Infinite?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Soul Music'

Answer: blue

This is when Death goes to visit the holy man. We also learn the interesting fact that the sound of one hand clapping is 'CL' (the other hand makes the AP).

5. When the Unseen University faculty are watching the events at the Free Music Festival in the crystal ball, where does the Senior Wrangler suggest they also look?

From Quiz 'Soul Music' Random Questions

Answer: The Skunk Club

The Senior Wrangler tries to backtrack and claim he'd never been there at all, but we know the truth. The Bursar suggests the Opera House (he never really caught the Music With Rocks In bug). The Pink Pussycat Club features in 'Thud' as the place where Nobby's girlfriend works as a pole dancer.

6. In order to forget, where does Death go first?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Soul Music'

Answer: Klatchian Foreign Legion

It's common knowledge that people join the Klatchian Foreign Legion to forget. They forget everything except sand apparently.

7. Where was the Guild of Musicians situated in Ankh-Morpork?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Soul Music'

Answer: Tin Lid Alley

Apparently if the Guild find you playing without a licence, 'they take your instrument and they shove - ..it's not much fun if you're a piccolo player'. According to Wikipedia, 'Tin Pan Alley was originally a specific place, West 28th Street between Broadway and Sixth Avenue in Manhattan.' This was where a group of music publishers set up. Tin Lid Alley is obviously the Discworld equivalent.

8. What is Death's name in the Klatchian Foreign Legion?

From Quiz 'Soul Music' Random Questions

Answer: Beau Nidle

"Beau Nidle". Beau-nidle. Bone-idle. Get it? (sheesh)

9. How much money were Imp, Glod and Lias told it would be to join the Musician's Guild?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Soul Music'

Answer: Seventy five dollars

They can't play anywhere without being members of the Guild, and they can't be members of the Guild until they've played. You work it out.

10. Who is the wizard that Quoth the raven worked for?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Soul Music'

Answer: C.V. Cheesewaller

Cheesewright was a friend and fellow assassin of Teppic,("Pyramids") Cutwell was a young wizard in Sto Lat, once made Royal Recogniser by Princess Keli, ("Mort") and Changebasket was the re-founder of the Ancient and Truly Original Sages of the Unbroken Circle.("Equal Rites")

11. What did Imp order in Gimlet's Hole Food that caused the other two to look at him strangely?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Soul Music'

Answer: Two hard-boilled eggs

They order four fried rats (without ketchup!), some dwarf bread (one of the things that convinced Glod that Imp wasn't elvish was that Imp liked dwarf bread), some coke (not the drink, the fuel) for Lias and then Imp asked for two hard-boilled eggs, which causes the others to give him an odd look. (This is not a typo, Imp comes from Llamedos, with its sing-song accent of double els in words).

12. By what method does the Band With Rocks In gain entrance to Quirm?

From Quiz 'Soul Music' Random Questions

Answer: Bribery

Well, it's not really bribery. Glod told the Quirm Mayor about the new "Music Tax" which came to $250 in Sto Lat and suggested paying it in advance. This convinced the Mayor to ignore the letter he had received from Sto Lat which is why he had been waiting at the town gates to begin with. All the other methods are employed in other books to get in or out of somewhere.

13. What did Lias change his name to?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Soul Music'

Answer: Cliff

Glod didn't think anyone with a name like Cliff would last long in the music business...

14. According to Susan Sto Helit, what does the name "Nigella" mean?

From Quiz 'Soul Music' Random Questions

Answer: Oops, we wanted a boy

When Susan is reflecting on her own name, to which the other three qualities apply, she says at least it isn't a bad name, like Nigella.

15. When Susan went back in time to see Death, what did she tell him when he asked her if he was a good grandfather?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Soul Music'

Answer: He had bony knees

Death was slighty taken aback by this. Even more so when Susan called him Grandad. Grandfather he could live with, but Grandad was only one step away from Gramps in his opinion.

16. One of Susan's friends, Gloria Thogsdaughter (a dwarf) was allowed to keep her axe ('there was something about the way she gripped it that made even Miss Butts give in'). What did Gloria do about her foot long beard?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Soul Music'

Answer: Plaited it and tied it in ribbons in the school colours

She was still barred from sport for using 'her axe in a threatening manner'. When the girls go to the stables, Gloria is accused of salivating over the pony!

17. Who is the Assassin sent by the Musicians Guild to eliminate Buddy, Glod and Lias?

From Quiz 'Soul Music' Random Questions

Answer: Lord Robert Selachii

He has just drawn his black-bladed knife when Susan appears and frightens him off. The others are also assassins. Chidder is Teppic's best mate in school in 'Pyramids'; Lord Downey is the head of the Assassin's Guild; Mr. Teatime (that's Te-ah-tim-eh) appears in 'Hogfather'.

18. What was Big Mad Drongo's real name?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Soul Music'

Answer: Adrian Turnipseed

A student at Unseen University, so named 'Big Mad Drongo' for once drinking a whole pint of shandy.

19. What was not one of the names that the corporal who 'welcomed' Death to the Klatchian Foreign Legion suggested might be his?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Soul Music'

Answer: St. Michael

One joins the Klatchian Foreign Legion to forget - and this corporal has certainly managed! Rummaging in his vest, he tries 'Medium' and 'Hand Wash Only' before Death concedes 'Corporal Cotton' is feasible. 'St. Michael' is the British firm Marks & Spencer underwear mark, and there's a very silly joke about someone announcing 'St. Michael' was their name having consulted their vest. Because Death doesn't do a lot in the Legion, they christen him 'Beau Nidle', which works in several ways!

20. What object in Death's backyard made Susan suddenly realize who her grandfather was?

From Quiz 'Soul Music' Random Questions

Answer: The tree swing

Susan had some vague recollections about her other grandfather having bony knees, but when she saw the swing it all came back to her. He'd attached each rope to a seperate branch, but unfortunately on opposite sides of the tree, so he'd just cut out a section of the trunk. What made Susan understand her grandfather was that there was no need for any props to hold up the tree afterward.

21. Who is responsible for the motorcycle used by Death to chase after the Band?

From Quiz 'Soul Music' Random Questions

Answer: The Librarian

He says he didn't make it, he just put it together. Well, actually he just said "Ook." When Death chases after the Band on the Librarian's motorcycle, he wears the Dean's jacket, thus doing so "in a coat he borrowed from the Dean," a reference to the Don McLean song 'American Pie'.

22. How many seconds were left in Albert's broken lifetimer when Death found him?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Soul Music'

Answer: 34

They were tipped into an empty beer bottle for safe-keeping by the Death of Rats.

23. The Dean made himself a leather coat. What was not one of the things he'd written on the back in studs?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Soul Music'

Answer: BORN IN ANKH-MORPOK

He'd started with 'DEAN', but it was a long coat. He went on with 'BORN TO', but wasn't quite sure what to put next (it eventually became 'BORN TO RUNE'). 'LIVE FATS DIE YO GNU' came about because it's very difficult to keep track of the direction you're going when you're working on the other side of the material. At seventy-two years old, the Dean feels seventeen.

24. What does Sergeant Colon initially guess is Death's first name?

From Quiz 'Soul Music' Random Questions

Answer: Keith

In another modern reference, it has often been noted that Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones looks like Death himself. Mort is the name of Death's former apprentice who became the Duke of Sto Helit (and is Susan's father). Nobby thinks he sounded like a Leonard. Colon finishes the scene by saying, "For a moment there I thought he sounded like a Susan." He's right, of course.

25. When Death became a member of the Canting Crew, what name did he assume?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Soul Music'

Answer: Mr. Scrub

Beau Nidle was his given name in the Klatchian Foreign Legion, the others are just fabricated by me. Thanks for playing my quiz, I hope you enjoyed it!

26. Where was The Band With Rocks In going to play their free concert?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Soul Music'

Answer: Hide Park

C.M.O.T Dibbler allowed them to give a free concert as he realised there would be lots of marketing opportunities (food, posters, t-shirts etc. etc.) Hyde Park and Green Park are both parks in London.

27. What did the beggars call Death in Soul Music?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Soul Music'

Answer: Mr Scrub

Death found it very peaceful living with Foul Old Ron (and his dog and his Smell), Coffin Henry, Arnold Sideways and the Duck Man. Death was known as Bill Door in 'Reaper Man', and Keith and Leonard were mentioned in 'Soul Music' when Colon and Nobby were speculating about Death's first name.

28. What was the name of the tavern in Scrote?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Soul Music'

Answer: The Jolly Cabbage

Scrote was in the Sto Plains, which are many miles of cabbages. The Jolly Cabbage was not a very merry place, though. The only way they don't finish up as spare ribs (or in Cliff's case, a rockery) is because they play. I made up the Amusing Boar and The Giggling Dwarf as suitably Discworld-ish. The Happpy Hamster is for my hamster, Hamish, who likes being in quizzes.

29. What was wrong with the leopard that Scum bought in 'Soul Music' instead of leopardskin trousers?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Soul Music'

Answer: It was deaf

What would you expect in a book about 'Soul Music' other than a deaf leopard? (Note: Def Leppard is a famous British hard rock band). The owner had got rid of it cheap because it couldn't hear the lion-tamer, but Scum doesn't think it will matter to their band as 'Your trousers don't have to listen'. When Noddy speculates about how to kill a leopard (which is in Crash's bedroom), Crash suggests they 'let it choke to death on Scum'.

30. What did Glod (possibly not in the best tradition of rock musicians) do to the rooms in which the 'Band With Rocks In' were staying?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Soul Music'

Answer: Redecorated them

By Pseudopolis, Glod is painting the rooms and putting up curtains. Rock star excesses were not for him! Even though Glod knew the most famous horn player there ever was was Brother Charnel, who stole Offler's altar gold and played magical music on the horn he made from it, here and now the people would shout for Glod Glodsson and not remember some felonious monk. (This is one of my favourite Discworld puns).
