Witches Abroad Trivia Questions

1. The witches were off on their travels in 'Witches Abroad' and Desiderata Hollow kicked it all off. Where did she go at the beginning of the story?

From Quiz
#12 'Witches Abroad': Girls on Tour

Answer: To her rest

Desiderata's journey to the afterlife set the ball rolling in 'Witches Abroad'. She chatted to Death while drinking her final cup of tea. Her predicament was that Esme Weatherwax needed to go to Genua, but no one could tell Granny what to do. Desiderata explained how she planned to get Esme to Genua, then Death used his scythe and the witch 'went to her rest'.

2. What is the natural number of witches in a coven?

From Quiz Witches Abroad

Answer: 1

In the Ramtops mountains inter-witch relationships take the form of clashes between very strong personalities. Consequently the witches only have get-togethers when they must and then spend much of the time arguing. Granny Esmerelda Weatherwax, Nanny Gytha Ogg, Magrat Garlick and the other Ramtops witches live in the small kingdom of Lancre, high up near the Hub (centre) of the Discworld. As its name suggests, the Discworld is a flat, circular world where the unwary can sail over the Rim (edge).

3. What does Mrs. Pleasant call Ella?

From Quiz Witches Abroad

Answer: Emberella

As we learn when Magrat is talking to Ella, Mrs. Pleasant calls her Emberella because she thinks it sounds jolly. She and Magrat think it sounds like something you put up in the rain.

4. When the witches discover the sleeping castle, whom does Nanny initially think is responsible?

From Quiz 'Witches Abroad' Random Questions

Answer: Black Aliss

Nanny says that Black Aliss really knew her stories and would be in as many as three at one time. She asks Granny if the sleeping castle is "A Black Aliss job?" Granny agrees that it could be, or someone like her - and that turns out to be Lily.

5. Magrat inherits a Fairy Godmother's wand from the witch Desiderata. What does this wand have on it?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett - 'Witches Abroad'

Answer: Gold and silver rings set into the wand

Throughout the book, Magrat tries hard to get the wand to work, but all she manages to do most of the time is turn objects into pumpkins.

6. What did everyone bring to the sabbat?

From Quiz Pratchett Mania - Witches Abroad

Answer: potato salad

This is the sabbat right at the beginning, on Bear (Bare) Mountain.

7. Magrat received a letter telling her to go to Genua as a fairy godmother and to 'Tell those 2 old Biddys they are notte to come'. Why was Magrat told to go to a foreign country?

From Quiz #12 'Witches Abroad': Girls on Tour

Answer: A girl called Ella was not allowed to marry the prince.

According to Desiderata's letter, Ella Saturday was not allowed to marry the prince. Magrat needed to go to Genua and prevent the wedding. The old witch had left her magic wand to Magrat with an explicit instruction to tell Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg not to go with her. Of course, they immediately tried to take control of the situation.

8. What does Magrat, the new fairy godmother, wear for the journey that upsets Granny Weatherwax?

From Quiz Witches Abroad

Answer: Baggy trousers

Magrat takes with her the fairy godmother's magic wand she inherited but her choice of clothing is governed by practicality. Granny is shocked not only at seeing Magrat "bifurcated" but also by her statement that people are naked underneath their clothes. Granny insists that she herself is not naked because she is wearing three vests. Written by Terry Pratchett as part of his "Discworld" series and published in 1991, "Witches Abroad" is the second book with Granny, Nanny and Magrat as main characters. In this book they argue their way across the Discworld's largest but unnamed continent.

9. Why is the mountain where the witches meet called Bear Mountain?

From Quiz Witches Abroad

Answer: Because there are few trees and the name was misspelled

The mountain was supposed to be called Bare Mountain because of the lack of trees. However, the name was misspelled and no one fixed it because the natives could sell bear products to wealthy hunters looking for bears. There are really no bears anywhere on the mountain.

10. How does Granny get Magrat to confidently go to the ball?

From Quiz 'Witches Abroad' Random Questions

Answer: Hypnotism

When Nanny suggests that her own experience at balls means she should go in Magrat's place, the shock means there is no resistance when Granny says "Look at me, Magrat Garlick".

11. When Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and Magrat travel abroad, Nanny loses all their money, and her broom, betting. How much money do they have between them after this happens?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett - 'Witches Abroad'

Granny Weatherwax, luckily, has a plan to get back all their money and Nanny Ogg's broom. She uses magic to break her opponent's contraption that he's using to cheat!

12. What is Desiderata Hollows' coffin made from?

From Quiz Pratchett Mania - Witches Abroad

Answer: pine

She got a very good deal from Mr Chert the troll at the sawmill.

13. On their way to Genua, which species did the witches find mining in the mountains?

From Quiz #12 'Witches Abroad': Girls on Tour

Answer: Dwarfs

Granny announced herself at the entrance to the cave expecting the dwarfs inside to know who she was. When her presence was announced, the king didn't seem particularly pleased. Granny's reputation preceded her. He was soon extremely grateful to have three witches in his mine: Magrat used the magic wand to turn a heap of collapsed rock into a pile of pumpkins. She hadn't meant to, but pumpkins was all she could do.

14. How does Magrat save the dwarves who are trapped underground behind a big rockfall?

From Quiz Witches Abroad

Answer: Turns the rocks into pumpkins

Magrat can only use her magic wand to turn things into pumpkins. On this occasion the trapped dwarves then remove the top layer of pumpkins and escape unharmed. More importantly, as far as the dwarves are concerned, the vein of valuable rock that they were mining is also unharmed. Reflecting its importance in their lives, dwarves are supposed to have over two hundred words to describe different types of rock. Inter-dwarf differences are considered less important and male and female dwarves look and dress alike. Some more traditional tribes even have no female pronouns, which means that courtships are pursued very carefully.

15. What are the sisters?

From Quiz Witches Abroad

Answer: Snakes that have become human

The sisters are Lilith's snake women, as Granny finds out when she's in the crowd at the thief's beheading. She knew what they were as she had encountered the minds of snakes in the forest before. However, she had never found them walking on two legs.

16. From whom did Magrat inherit the fairy godmother's wand?

From Quiz 'Witches Abroad' Random Questions

Answer: Desiderata Hollow

Desiderata knew she had to find a way to get all three of the witches (Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and Magrat Garlick) to Genua. Only by giving the wand to Magrat could she be sure that the other two would go - they would be certain that Magrat couldn't do the job herself.

17. What is Nanny Ogg eating when she and Granny Weatherwax share a bed?

19. Further on their travels, the witches came to an inn full of garlic and terrified townspeople. Why were they scared?

From Quiz #12 'Witches Abroad': Girls on Tour

Answer: A vampire lived nearby.

The witches thought it was weird that everyone retreated indoors before the sun had even fully set. Little did they know that the townspeople were plagued by a vampire. Luckily, three witches arrived! First Magrat threw open the shutters, unknowingly knocking a bat to the ground. Then the creature had been hit with a garlic sausage that had been thrown out of the window by Granny. Finally Nanny Ogg's cat found it - and Greebo liked to play with his food.

20. Nanny Ogg's infamous song is about which animal?

From Quiz Witches Abroad

Answer: Hedgehog

When drinking, Nanny tends to sing what she defends as a traditional ballad but Granny disgustedly refers to as "That Song". Granny prevents Nanny from singing it soon after they leave the dwarves. However, fuelled by "Banananana dakrys", Nanny manages to give a rendition later on when they reach Genua. "Wyrd Sisters", the first book to 'star' Granny, Nanny and Magrat, also features the song, although its words are never given. Terry Pratchett dedicated "Witches Abroad" to everyone who had sent him their version of "The Hedgehog Song" after reading the first book.

21. What animal ate Granny's hat?

From Quiz Witches Abroad

Answer: An alligator

Granny's hat was eaten by an alligator, which she then attacked with a snake. She refused to let Saturday go after it, so Mrs. Gogol gave her a hat with fruit all over it.

22. What makes Jason Ogg capable of shoeing even the wildest stallions?

From Quiz 'Witches Abroad' Random Questions

Answer: The mystic Horseman's Word

He hits them between the eyes with a hammer and whispers in their ear, "Cross me, you bugger, and I'll have thy goolies on t'anvil, thou knows I can." Even a stallion that could kick a man through a wall would walk out of Jason's forge half an hour later "newly shod and stangely docile." Granny later uses this to get the horses meant to pull Ella's coach to run away.

23. Magrat sets off to find the girl to whom she is a Fairy Godmother. When she gets there, what happens?

From Quiz #12 'Witches Abroad': Girls on Tour

Answer: A group of bulls

The little town had an annual event known as the Thing with the Bulls. The only people who didn't know about the Thing with the Bulls were the three foreign witches downing a bottle of Absinthe outside the inn. Even as the bulls approached, the witches refused to go inside. Granny Weatherwax had stood up and smacked the leading bull right between the eyes. Then Magrat weaved between them and took the prize rosette from the largest bull. All the while, Nanny Ogg lay on the floor in fits of uncontrollable laughter.

26. How is the vampire that is terrorising a village killed?

From Quiz Witches Abroad

Answer: Eaten by a cat

While in bat form the vampire is unintentionally stunned twice: first by Magrat flinging a window shutter back and then by Granny throwing Nanny's garlic sausage through a window. Greebo, Nanny's cat, finds the semi-conscious bat on the ground and eats what he perceives as a winged mouse. Vampires can be found in various places on the Discworld's largest continent, but their homeland is Uberwald in the Ramtops. Some of the more modern vampires have changed their lifestyles and no longer drink human blood. Others continue to follow their traditional way of life, inhabiting forbidding castles and preying on the unwary.

Granny Weatherwax took the little change that they had left and set off to find the men who had cheated Nanny out of her winnings. While pretending to be a novice, Granny frustrated the tricks the cheating gamblers had in store and eventually won back all their money, as well as Nanny's broomstick.
