Granny Weatherwax was considered a very powerful witch by many, though she rarely did any actual magic. She often used common sense and 'headology' to make things - and people - work. Witches were generally respected by the local population, to the point where the king's guards disobeyed orders and refused to arrest them. As the two older witches (Granny and Nanny Ogg) had been midwives at the birth of most of Lancre, the threat of "I brought you into this world and I'll see you out of it" often did the trick when people were being disrespectful.

It's not their fault nobody asks who the father was.
