Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Witches in the Discworld didn't have leaders, but who was "the most highly-regarded of the leaders they didn't have"?

Answer: Granny Weatherwax

Granny Weatherwax was considered a very powerful witch by many, though she rarely did any actual magic. She often used common sense and 'headology' to make things - and people - work. Witches were generally respected by the local population, to the point where the king's guards disobeyed orders and refused to arrest them.

As the two older witches (Granny and Nanny Ogg) had been midwives at the birth of most of Lancre, the threat of "I brought you into this world and I'll see you out of it" often did the trick when people were being disrespectful.
2. Which Discworld witch had fifteen children and a multitude of grandchildren?

Answer: Nanny Ogg

Despite her name, Granny Weatherwax never had any children of her own. Nanny Ogg, on the other hand, had produced a tribe of descendants. The problem with having such a large family was that she didn't bother to remember the names of her daughters-in-law, even though they did her cleaning and brought meals for her. Shawn Ogg was Nanny's youngest son and worked as a guard at Lancre castle in "Wyrd Sisters".
3. With King Verence dead, Lancre's heir was in danger, so a servant took the baby to the witches. Who did the witches put the baby in the care of?

Answer: An actor and his wife

King Verence of Lancre had been murdered by his cousin, Duke Felmet. Fearing (correctly) that the young heir was in danger, a servant took the child and the king's crown, and rode out into the stormy night. The servant gave the child to three witches, who debated what to do next.

A troupe of travelling actors were in town and the coven agreed that it was safer to allow the young heir to grow up anonymously far away from the Duke. The baby was given to Vitoller and his wife, and the crown was hidden in the props box.
4. Greebo was an evil, one-eyed tomcat. Which Discworld witch was his owner?

Answer: Nanny Ogg

Greebo was a nasty piece of work, but despite the evidence, Nanny could only ever see the adorable kitten he once was. He "divided his time between sleeping, eating and fathering the most enormous incestuous feline tribe." Greebo wandered into Lancre castle one day, which gave the ghost of King Verence the opportunity he needed.

He trapped the cat in a store room, knowing that a witch (who would be able to see ghosts) would come looking for him eventually. If he could explain his situation to a witch, then they would be able to come up with a plan to enact revenge on his murderous cousin.
5. Something was wrong with the kingdom in "Wyrd Sisters". Who or what did the witches summon in order to gather information about the strange happenings?

Answer: A demon

The kingdom wasn't happy with the way Lord Felmet was treating it. The witches gathered a collection of ingredients like a "sharp and terrible copper stick" and "rather old washing soda" in order to summon a demon. Magrat complained about the resources they had gathered, believing that you needed rare and expensive things like a magic sword and spices. Nevertheless, a demon with an unpronounceable name appeared and told the witches that the land had woken up because it wasn't being treated right.
6. Magrat was the youngest witch in the coven and was yet to experience love. Who did she fall for in "Wyrd Sisters"?

Answer: The Fool

It was love at first sight! The Fool was lying by a lake and reflecting on his life when he heard singing. It wasn't very good singing, but it roused something in the Fool. When he stood up, Magrat thought he was a colourful demon at first. She thought about running away like a timid gazelle, but there was a good chance she would out-distance him.

There wasn't much time to say anything else before the Fool turned and ran from the witch. Luckily, that wasn't the end of their romance!
7. In "Wyrd Sisters", the witches came up with a plan to freeze Lancre in time for 15 years. Why did they want to do that?

Answer: Tomjon would be old enough to claim his kingship.

Tomjon, rightful heir to the Lancre throne, had been sent away with a troupe of actors. As a baby, he was unable to claim the kingship, so the witches knew they would have to wait a number of years before he would be ready to fulfil his destiny as king. Once the baby had left the kingdom, they performed a complicated spell to freeze the land in time for 15 years. Tomjon grew up outside the bubble, but hardly any time had passed for Felmet's subjects.
8. How did the witches keep an eye on Tomjon while he was away from Lancre?

Answer: They used a crystal ball.

Nanny Ogg had a crystal ball, though the actual object stretched the definitions of "crystal" and "ball" to their extremes. A gift from one of Nanny's children who had visited "forn seaside parts", it was made of green glass and was shaped like a fishing boat. Granny was unimpressed with the crystal ball. "It distorted everything including, she suspected, the truth."
9. In "Wyrd Sisters", Felmet commissioned a play that would convince the public to turn against the witches. The three female witches were actually played by male actors throughout the drama. True or false?

Answer: False

Felmet had ordered the guards to arrest the witches, so when they came across three actors dressed in occult attire and preparing to go onstage, they did as they were told. Despite their protests, the actors were taken into the dungeon. Meanwhile, Granny, Nanny, and Magrat were hanging around backstage while trying to figure out what to do next.

They were mistaken for the three actors and ushered onstage ready for Act Two.
10. With some input from the witches, who was crowned king at the end of "Wyrd Sisters"?

Answer: The Fool

Destiny had appeared to lead Tomjon back to the country of his birth in order for him to claim the throne. Tomjon, however, had other ideas. He didn't want to be king; he wanted to pursue his acting career with his adopted father and the troupe of actors.

When they were in the same room, Magrat noticed a striking resemblance between Tomjon and the Fool. The witches told the people that the Fool was actually Tomjon's older half-brother. The Fool was then crowned king and Tomjon was able to make his way back to Ankh-Morpork with a healthy donation from the new king.
