trivia question Quick Question
According to this serial, what is the secret identity of Captain America?

From Quiz ""Captain America" - The 1944 Movie Serial"

Captain America Trivia Questions

1. The story started with Steve Rogers as a 5'4", 95lb weakling determined to join the army. What did Steve give Dr. Erskine as his motive to enlist?

From Quiz
"Captain America" Trilogy

Answer: He didn't like bullies.

Steve's character was outlined from the beginning and remained constant throughout the series. He was never about blindly serving his country, but about standing up for the little guys and for personal freedom.

2. Who plays the First Avenger?

From Quiz Captain America (2011)

Answer: Chris Evans

Captain America, or the First Avenger, is played by Chris Evans. Evans stars in multiple movies, including the other Marvel movie "The Fantastic Four" (2005) and its sequel as Johnny Storm, or the Human Torch. He also appears in movies such as "Cellular" (2004), "The Nanny Diaries" (2007) "Push" (2009), and "What's Your Number?" (2011).

3. According to this serial, what is the secret identity of Captain America?

From Quiz "Captain America" - The 1944 Movie Serial

Answer: Grant Gardner

I really have no idea why Captain America was changed from being Steve Rogers, to Assistant Attorney Grant Gardner. I can see changing his occupation to help facilitate the story, but why change a perfectly good name like Steve Rogers? Apparently, even back in the 40s, Hollywood had a habit of taking proven winners and completely changing things around to suit their own creative egos. Captain America was portrayed by serial veteran Dick Purcell.

4. What is the Triskelion?

From Quiz Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Answer: S.H.I.E.L.D.'s headquarters

Rogers confronts Nick Fury in his office in Fury, conceding to Cap's interest in full disclosure, brings him down to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s basement facility to show off Project Insight - three missile-outfitted helicarriers synced to satellites around the globe. They continue around in the atmosphere neutralizing threats before they even happen. Rogers says that they're only keeping people safe by pointing a gun at their heads. Unfortunately, he's not thrilled with the program. Rogers heads to the Smithsonian, visiting the Captain America exhibit there in his spare time and recalling the events of the war, watching Peggy Carter speak in video footage and mourning Bucky Barnes. He ends up visiting Peggy at home and, in her nineties, she tries to apologize for the life he couldn't live. He admits that her founding of S.H.I.E.L.D. is one of the only reasons he stayed. In his office, Fury is surprised to find that all of the files he has on Project Insight are sealed away and unable to be accessed... on his authority. So he goes upstairs to speak to Alexander Pierce, the Secretary of Internal Security for S.H.I.E.L.D., specifically asking that Project Insight be temporarily delayed while he can get a grasp on the weird things going on. Pierce agrees as long as Iron Man stops off at his niece's birthday.

5. Where were they when Howard Stark invited Peggy Carter to a "midnight fondue" in front of Steve?

From Quiz "Captain America" Trilogy

Answer: On a plane

Howard was piloting the plane that took Steve on his rescue mission against orders. Steve mistook "fondue" to mean something naughty. Later he found out it was just bread and cheese.

6. When is most of the film set?

From Quiz Captain America (2011)

Answer: World War II

The film begins in modern times, then flashes back to when most of the movie is set, which is during the end of World War II in Europe. This is shown throughout the film as it discusses Nazis and Adolf Hitler. In addition, there are elements of the movie that are included to establish the time period, including the type of vehicles used and the characters' outfits.

7. What weapon does Captain America use most often in this serial?

From Quiz "Captain America" - The 1944 Movie Serial

Answer: A revolver

Captain America's trademark shield was nowhere to be found in any of the fifteen chapters of this serial. We can only assume that this particular change was made because of the special effects problems that having him throwing it at the bad guys would incur. Instead, in those days before computer-generated animation, Cap was packing heat most of the time.

8. Dr. Erskine asks Steve if he wants to kill Nazis. After originally deflecting the question, Steve replies: "I don't want to kill anyone. I don't like __________."

From Quiz Quotes from "Captain America"

Answer: bullies

Steve says, "I don't like bullies; I don't care where they're from." Steve's response to Dr. Erskine's question showed him that Steve was the perfect candidate for the serum infusion. Dr. Erskine knew that the right person for the serum would not want to fight, but would do so for the right reasons.

9. Whose father is killed during the ratification of the Sokovia Accords?

From Quiz Captain America: Civil War

Answer: T'Challa

The Avengers discuss the Sokovia Accord and Vision puts forth the point that their very strength, as a group, may be a cause of the increasing catastrophes around the world. Tony agrees with Vision; they're killing innocent people, even if they're fighting bad guys, so they need to be put in check. Steve believes that the document simply shifts the blame; people on the United Nations panel will be pushing agendas and The Avengers will lose their right to choose. The Avengers are split down the middle with this. Romanoff, surprisingly, agrees with Stark, believing that if they have one hand on the wheel of the situation, they can still steer. Steve gets a message on his phone calling him away; Peggy died in her sleep in her nineties. He flies to London for her funeral and finds motivation in her words, reassured that he needs to stand firm on his decision. Though Romanoff flies on to Vienna to sign the Accords, Steve refuses. In Vienna, one hundred and seventeen countries ratify the Sokovia Accords. Romanoff meets T'Challa, the Prince of Wakanda, and apologizes not only for the casualties in Lagos, but for Rogers' non-attendance. During the event, a bomb is blown up outside the conference room and it kills T'Challa's father, the King, and justifies the Accords all the more.

10. During basic training, Col. Phillips tosses a grenade at his troops. What does Rogers do?

From Quiz Captain America: The First Avenger

Answer: Jumps onto it

Steve is sent along with the men of the Strategic Scientific Reserve almost immediately, falling into the training regime under Col. Chester Phillips and Peggy Carter and finding that he's not really cut out for the expected physical requirements. The regime's goal, at the end of it all, is to single out one candidate to become the inaugural member of a super-soldier initiative set up to end the war. Surprisingly, while Steve is horribly inadequate for basic training, Dr. Erskine believes him to be the only choice because of his problem solving and unbreakable spirit. Col. Phillips, believing that another soldier, Hodges, is a better choice, tests his men by throwing a dummy grenade into their group to test their reactions. Everyone flees except Steve, who throws himself onto it to protect his fellow soldiers. That night, when Rogers has a chance to talk to Erskine, he asks why he was chosen, and Erskine brings up their plan to overthrow Hydra and Johann Schmidt, who leads the division and searches for an immense power within the planet. He, personally, tried to change himself using a super-soldier serum and while it worked to an extent, it had its obvious side effects. Erskine chose Steve because he was weak to start and wouldn't squander the gift he would give him. He needs to stay who he is: an imperfect soldier but a good man.

11. When Steve sat down with Bucky in the pub after recruiting the Howling Commandos, which song were the men singing in the background?

From Quiz "Captain America" Trilogy

Answer: There Is a Tavern in the Town

Part of the lyrics were about how best friends must part, which could be seen as foreshadowing of the whole friendship arc. When Peggy walked in to talk to Steve the crowd were singing about a "damsel dark".

12. What was the name of the villain behind the Purple Death?

From Quiz "Captain America" - The 1944 Movie Serial

Answer: The Scarab

The Purple Death itself was a special chemical concoction that, when administered to someone, caused the victim to be very susceptible to suggestions, even suggestions that would be completely against their nature (such as killing someone or committing suicide). A side effect of the drug was that the victim also broke out in purple blotches on his skin, but this was only referred to in the serial, never shown. Not that it really would've mattered too much if we did see them, since it was a black and white film. The Scarab was, in reality, Dr. Maldor. Maldor had been using the Purple death to kill all the members of an expedition to some ancient Mayan ruins in South America. He was the one who had found special information that made the trip successful, but felt he had been slighted in terms of being rewarded for his contribution. So Maldor decided to kill everyone else involved with the expedition and use the information he had discovered for his own gain. Maldor was played by the wonderfully hammy Lionel Atwill, star of countless B-movies.

13. Where do Steve and Sam locate Bucky after the bombing?

From Quiz Captain America: Civil War

Answer: Bucharest

As the news comes in, the bomber of the United Nations building is identified as Bucky Barnes and the manhunt is renewed. Romanoff speaks to T'Challa and offers her apologies, but T'Challa vows to hunt down Barnes himself, refusing to let the Accords his father wished to see come to pass have a say in his revenge. Steve calls Romanoff soon after and while she tries to convince him otherwise, he decides to bring Sam with him to Bucharest (on Sharon Carter's intelligence) to bring Bucky in himself. In Bucharest, it doesn't take long for Steve and Sam to locate Bucky's apartment and get into contact with him. Though Steve tries to convince Bucky to leave before the police come in, their talk runs long and they have to work together, somewhat, to get away. While Bucky sees no harm in killing his way through the building, Steve tries to clean things up behind him. It allows T'Challa, the Black Panther, to swoop in from above and engage in combat as well, forcing a chase through the Bucharest city streets. Ultimately, Steve prevents T'Challa from harming Bucky, but the three of them (and Sam) get cornered by the police and War Machine swoops in to defuse the situation.

14. When Steve asked Peggy what she thought of the vibranium shield, she fired a gun at him. Why?

From Quiz "Captain America" Trilogy

Answer: She caught him kissing another girl.

She got mad when she saw Private Lorraine kissing him. Steve managed to kiss a different girl in each movie (two in "The First Avenger").

15. Why does Dr. Abraham Erskine choose Steve to be part of the super soldier program?

From Quiz Captain America (2011)

Answer: Because he understands compassion and the value of strength

After Steve is chosen to undergo the procedure to make him a super soldier, he asks Erskine why he was chosen. Erskine explains that a strong man can lose respect for his power, but a weak man knows the value of strength and knows compassion. It was definitely not because Steve had passed all the physical tests.

16. What was the name of the special device created by Professor Lyman, the one which was stolen by the Scarab in the first chapter of this serial?

From Quiz "Captain America" - The 1944 Movie Serial

Answer: Thermodynamic Vibration Engine

Lyman also called his device the "Dynamic Vibrator" and uttered the immortal line "How'd you find out about my vibrator?" when the Scarab's men broke into his lab to steal it. It was one of those "rolling-on-the-floor" moments when I first watched the serial. The Scarab's thugs then administered the Purple Death to the scientist, and the Scarab ordered him to commit suicide by walking out in front of a speeding truck.

17. When Steve is put through the infusion procedure, Dr. Erskine and Howard Stark succeed in integrating the serum into Steve. After they pull Steve out of the chamber, Agent Carter asks Steve how he feels. How does Steve answer?

From Quiz Quotes from "Captain America"

Answer: "Taller."

The serum made Steve taller, faster, and much stronger than before. Because of his good nature, the implementation of the serum was successful in Steve. Johan Schmidt had insisted on being injected as well, but because he was evil, it didn't infuse correctly. Because of this, he suffered painful side affects, and ultimately became Red Skull. Steve shows off the success of the infusion right away, when he catches Heinz Kruger, a Hydra agent who causes an explosion, and steals a vial of the serum.

18. Where do Rogers and Romanoff review the information given over by Nick Fury?

From Quiz Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Answer: Apple Store

Rogers heads back to Fury's hospital and meets with Romanoff who informs him that she understands why Fury would call in the mercenaries. She also knows, interestingly, that Fury was killed by a man that the mercenary community calls 'The Winter Soldier', who's been responsible for nearly two dozen high-profile assassinations. Interestingly, she was once attacked by said 'Winter Soldier' when protecting an engineer in Iran; the soldier shot the engineer through her. The two of them head to an Apple Store and plug the USB stick into one of the MacBooks, quickly shuffling through the protected information inside and fully anticipating that S.H.I.E.L.D.'s task force intercepting in nine minutes. They get a destination - Wheaton, New Jersey, and head out, just barely escaping by blending into the crowd.

19. What was the name of Red Skull's plane?

From Quiz "Captain America" Trilogy

Answer: The Valkyrie

In addressing his troops Red Skull mentioned "victory on the wings of the Valkyrie". Steve eventually crashed it in the Arctic.

20. Captain America's pal, Dave, was the first person outside of the Scarab's gang to discover the secret behind the Purple Death. What made the Purple Death so compelling?

From Quiz "Captain America" - The 1944 Movie Serial

Answer: It was distilled from the supridium, a little-known orchid.

After the secret ingredient was discovered, the Scarab stopped using the Purple Death as his main weapon. After the first few chapters of the serial, he started to just use the technology he stole from others to commit his crimes.

21. At the beginning of "The Winter Soldier", Natasha was trying to set Steve up with various girls. What reason did he give for declining?

From Quiz "Captain America" Trilogy

Answer: Too busy

Later he said it was hard to find someone with shared life experience. He did try to ask out his next door neighbor though, before she turned out to be Agent 13.

22. In what area of New York City is the serum experiment conducted? It's also the area where Steve was from.

From Quiz Captain America (2011)

Answer: Brooklyn

When Steve and Agent Peggy Carter are being driven to the place where the experiment is to be held, Steve points out all the places he was beat up, since he knows the neighborhood. Also, this is noted when Colonel Phillips is talking to Senator Brandt, since the Senator asks why he is in Brooklyn.

23. Professor Lyman's brother, Clinton, was also an inventor. What was the name of the fantastic device that he created?

From Quiz "Captain America" - The 1944 Movie Serial

Answer: The Life Restorer Machine

Dr. Clinton Lyman invented the Life Restorer Machine. It was based on the "diathermic method of inducing fever by high temperatures, resulting from the electronic resuscitation of the circulatory system". He would also inject a special serum into the subject's vital organs. The device would only work on something that hadn't been dead too long. The demonstration of the Life Restorer featured a dead dog being brought back to life. The procedure was viewed by Grant Gardner, Gail Richards (Lorna Gray), Dr. Maldor and Lyman's fellow members of the Mayan Explorers Club.

24. Stark recruits which teenage superhero to his team to oppose and capture Captain America?

From Quiz Captain America: Civil War

Answer: Peter Parker

Stark and Romanoff are given only thirty-six hours to locate Bucky, Steve, and Sam, so Tony heads to Queens, New York City, to catch a teenage Peter Parker getting home from school. Claiming that Peter received the September Grant, Stark manages to get a few minutes alone with the boy, revealing that he's actually the young Spider-Man who's been saving lives and stopping crimes all throughout New York City as an amateur hero. Stark believes he needs an upgrade...and a passport. Natasha doesn't need to leave the building to find back-up, instead speaking to T'Challa for her support. All of them head to Leipzig/Halle Airport, Germany, where a helicopter plans to take Cap's team onward, and after evacuating the premises, they await battle.

25. What was the codename of Sam Wilson's flight suit?

From Quiz Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Answer: Falcon

Steve and Natasha end up at Sam Wilson's house looking for a place to hide away and he offers them a place of refuge. Discussing their next plan of action, they deduce that there's likely a mole in S.H.I.E.L.D. (aside from Pierce) working for Hydra and they believe it to be Jasper Sitwell, who they saved from the Indian Ocean mission. The only other matter is infiltration, but Sam has that figured out; he worked on a project known as Falcon, and if they can get into Fort Meade, they can reacquire it. Steve and Natasha grab Sitwell from a meeting and interrogate him on top of a building before the latter kicks him off of it. It's just a tactic though; Sam swoops in with his Falcon outfit to pick the mole back up to explain everything. The truth is that Hydra is running off of Zola's algorithm now, predicting the future through all manner of information to eliminate any future threats-- including The Avengers. Project Insight's helicarriers will do the rest of the work, killing everyone else around the globe that may cause issue. The three take Sitwell captive, but it doesn't much matter; the Winter Soldier attacks them on the highway, tossing Sitwell into traffic and opening fire on their vehicle.

26. Schmidt reveals that beneath his face, his skull is which colour?

From Quiz Captain America: The First Avenger

Answer: Red

Reaching the Hydra base, Rogers manages to force his way inside and sneak through the structure to find the cells. When he does, he introduces himself as Captain America and frees everyone sends them out to perform a prison break. He goes deeper though, letting the chaos unfold while he persists. Schmidt, seeing this from his surveillance room, starts the timers and grabs the Tesseract while Zola grabs his blueprints. Steve manages to find Bucky strapped to a table in one of the lab rooms and the two escape as the main chamber is detonated, destroying all of Schmidt's work. They catch up to Schmidt as he's about to depart and it leads to a small interaction, but the two can't come to blows for long. Schmidt does, however, reveal himself as one of Erskine's greatest successes and pulls off his mask to reveal a red skull underneath his face, citing it as a side effect of the serum in its early days and indicating that it made him more than human. He and Zola flee while Steve and Bucky scramble, narrowly escaping as the facility crumbles.

27. Steve met Sam Wilson and they hit it off right away. What did Sam say he liked about his job as counselor at the VA?

From Quiz "Captain America" Trilogy

Answer: Nobody gave him orders.

His exact words were "The number of people giving me orders are down to about zero, so hell yeah." No wonder he would come out vehemently against government control in "Civil War".

28. What is the power source for the weapons of HYDRA?

From Quiz Captain America (2011)

Answer: A tesseract

Johann Schmidt discovers the tesseract, which is from legend, in Norway at the beginning of the film. He then uses Dr. Zola to harness the energy in the tesseract to power his weapons. The use of the tesseract, or Cosmic Cube, as it is known in the Marvel universe, ties the movie to "Thor".

29. What prestigious institution did Dr. Maldor work for?

From Quiz "Captain America" - The 1944 Movie Serial

Answer: The Drummond Museum of the Arts and Sciences

The Drummond Museum, through the efforts of Dr. Maldor, had been exhibiting some of the artifacts that the Mayan expedition had brought back.

30. After releasing a number of prisoners, he finds Bucky isolated, and strapped to a table. When Bucky realizes that Steve is the one rescuing him, he asks Steve, "What happened to you?" How does Steve reply?

From Quiz Quotes from "Captain America"

Bucky asks Steve if the procedure that made him taller was painful, and Steve said it was. Bucky then asks if it was permanent. Steve says, "So far." The two best friends kept their humor, even during the heat of a battle and rescue.
