Answer: General is following a troll.

The story takes place in Wilmington, North Carolina. General is in hot pursuit of the troll. Later, General is accused of killing Amanda's parrot.

From Quiz "Cat's Eye" (1985)

Answer: General spins the troll on the record player and it flies into the fan.

General chases the troll around the bedroom. The troll tries to escape by latching onto some balloons. The troll lands on a turntable. General turns on the record player and the troll starts to spin around. Amanda yells, "faster, faster." General obliges, and increases the speed of the record player to 45 rpm, and then 78 rpm. The resultant force, flings the troll into the fan, where it is mangled. As an aside, the music playing on the turntable was, "Every Breath You Take."
