Lee Van Cleef played the role of Colonel Douglas Mortimer a retired soldier well-known for his skill with a gun. His outfit and countenance were typical of "the man in black", a mysterious dark figure that was often seen in westerns of the time. He told him that he couldn't just stop the train like that, but when he saw Mortimer's gun, he changed his opinion and got back on the train.

Music was used in this movie to build suspense, to mirror sadness, and to inspire fear and surprise. Morricone did the music for hundreds of movies. As soon as Manco rode into town, the boy introduced himself and offered him advice on which hotel to stay at and showed him where the stables were. He also told Manco about the bank, and said he would put money in it once he got some. Manco then paid him fifty cents to tell him if he saw anyone new in town. The boy pointed out Col. Mortimer to him. Manco also paid him to tell him where Mortimer was staying. Later, the boy also told him about some of the gang members coming to town in exchange for more money from Manco. Whenever Fernando had something to tell Manco, he would stand outside the hotel and whistle to get Manco's attention. Like the other children in the town, Fernando wore white clothing and was often seen running around with the other kids. He was also hidden under a porch during the showdown between Mortimer and Manco.

Indio and his gang were planning to rob the Bank of El Paso. It was one of the largest banks in the area and was said to hold a safe full of gold, as well as paper money. The majority of the movie took place in the smaller town of Tucumcari which was nearby.

Manco and the three men were in the desert before they were supposed to rob the bank in Santa Cruz. One of the men told him that he had been fooled by Manco when Manco informed them that he was joining the gang to hand them over to the law, and Manco told him that he never said he was joking. Manco then killed the three men and had the man at the telegraph office in the town put out an alarm saying that the bank had been robbed. He then tied him up and went back to El Paso to wait for the arrival of Indio's gang.

Kinski was a well known German actor who appeared in "Dr.Zhivago"(1965), "Operation Thunderbolt"(1977) and numerous other movies throughout the '60s and '70s. After the bank robbery, the gang made its way to Agua Caliente. Mortimer was already there waiting for them. After a confrontation in which he killed the hunchback member of Indio's gang, he told Indio that he had heard about the robbery and offered to open the safe in exchange for five thousand dollars. He said that he could do so without blowing it up and ruining some of the bank notes in the process. He then used a drill and some acid to help pick the lock and open the safe. Before becoming a bounty killer, Colonel Mortimer had actually been a soldier. According to the old man that Manco got information about Mortimer from, Mortimer had once been "the finest shot in the Carolinas". He was always wearing black and was almost always smoking a pipe.

Indio carried a gold pocket watch with a woman's picture in it. Whenever he was about to shoot someone, he would open the pocket watch and let its music play. He would tell them that they needed to draw their weapons once the music stopped and try and kill him. He would also sit with the pocket watch open and listen to the music while he had flashbacks of a crime he had committed where he killed a man and raped his fiance. The woman he was raping killed herself during the act with a gun that had been under the pillow, leaving Indio somewhat traumatized.

This movie was supposed to reflect the 1860s town of Tucumcari, Texas. In reality, Tucumcari did not exist until 1901. This was not the only anachronism in the movie. Vehicles could be seen in the background in numerous scenes.

After Mortimer shot Groggy, Indio shot Mortimer's gun out of his hand. He then opened his pocket watch to let it play its music. He told Mortimer to pick up his gun and try and kill him when the music ended. While the music played, Mortimer's eyes looked tear-filled. Before the music stopped, Manco showed up with Mortimer's pocket watch which was nearly identical to Indio's and played the same music. While Manco pointed his gun at Indio, he handed his gun belt to Mortimer. Once the music from Mortimer's watch stopped playing, Mortimer shot Indio and picked up his pocket watch. When Manco commented on the family resemblance between Mortimer and the woman in the pictures from both watches, Mortimer revealed that the woman that Indio had raped was his sister. Mortimer then told Manco to keep the entire reward because he deserved it. This showed that Col. Mortimer's true motive for following Indio was vengeance for his dead sister rather than the reward.

At the end of the movie, the audience found out that Indio raped Mortimer's sister and killed her fiancé, causing her to kill herself. Her picture was seen in both of these characters' pocket-watches. They both had flashbacks of her during the movie. He was seeking vengeance, he refused all money and Eastwood's "man with no name" character put all the bodies in a wagon to go claim the monetary prize. Both characters had gotten what they came for.
