Knowing Trivia Questions

1. John was a single parent who lost his wife in a fire. He lived together with his only son, Caleb. What was John's profession?

From Quiz
Knowing

Answer: An astrophysics lecturer

John Koestler was an astrophysics lecturer at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During one of his lessons, he discussed the theory of determinism versus randomness in the universe. He posed a question to his students about whether all the things that happened in the universe and on the earth were planned and predetermined before, or if it was just mere coincidence.

2. There were three disasters that were predicted by Lucinda that were yet to happen. John witnessed the first disaster - an airplane crash. Curious and eager to know more, he went to the location of the second disaster. What happened there?

From Quiz Knowing

Answer: Underground train derailment

John was on his way to his son's school to pick him up. He witnessed an airplane crash. He was determined to stop the second catastrophic event from happening. He found out the exact location and phoned the authorities. On that day, he went to the location. John was angry because the streets were not sealed off. He chased a suspect for some time, only to find out that he was only a thief. Suddenly, the underground train derailed, killing many innocent people.

3. John and Diana visited Lucinda's house to search for any clues that could lead them to the location of the last disaster. Which biblical character was seen together with Jesus on the poster in Lucinda's house?

From Quiz Knowing

Answer: Ezekiel

Ezekiel was a famous prophet in the Bible. On the poster, he was taking orders from Jesus. Diana said her mother, Lucinda, liked that poster very much. She would spend her time just staring at the poster.

4. The last disaster that was predicted by Lucinda would kill 33 people. However, Diana later realized that the number 33 should read backwards, which was EE. What did EE mean?

From Quiz Knowing

Answer: Everybody else

Diana told John that her mother used to write numbers and letters backwards. She found out that 33 was actually EE. John and Diana went to Lucinda's house to look for more hints. They were shocked to see that the bottom of Lucinda's bed was scratched with the words "everybody else", which was abbreviated as EE in the letter she wrote. Both of them were horrified when they came to realize that the last disaster would eventually kill off everybody else.

5. As Caleb stood in the alien transport, bidding farewell to his father, he and John did what appeared to be some kind of sign language, which also featured very early in the movie. What was the meaning of the silent message they gave each other?

From Quiz Knowing "Knowing"

Answer: You and me together forever

John also gave Caleb a locket with a picture of the both of them and Caleb's mother, Allison, who died in an apartment fire. Within the film, John and Caleb were shown to have a very close relationship, and neither John nor Caleb seemed to have many other friends, so must have emotionally relied on each other a lot, although this was not shown entirely convincingly within the film, as tender moments were few and far between. In the end, the aliens would not allow John to board their ship, as they only wanted the children. Despite the uncertainty of what would come to be for him, John let Caleb go with the aliens along with Abby and two rabbits, knowing that it might have been his only chance at survival. However, this farewell left John virtually bereft of hope for his own future.

6. As the alien spaceship left, certain objects, associated with the presence of the aliens, levitated around John. In Biblical texts these objects portended misfortune, which was also their potential role in this movie. What were they?

From Quiz Knowing "Knowing"

Answer: Black stones

The black stones were curious objects. One was given to Caleb by the aliens quite early in the story, and they were also found in numerous other locations within the film; Lucinda had quite a large stash of them, and Diana was found holding one as she died. Because the black stones were in high quantity around where the alien spaceship landed, some might surmise that the black stones were merely indicators that the aliens were present. Alternatively, they might have been signs of bad luck, suggesting that misfortune was soon to approach, even if it were not for the person holding the stone.

7. After realising he should see his family one last time before dying, John drove back to the city. Whilst doing so, a sombre piece of classical music played whilst panic was rife. Which German composed this piece of music?

From Quiz Knowing "Knowing"

Answer: Beethoven

Whilst 'Knowing' used ambient music and sound effects to set the mood and scene well, there were very few songs used in the movie. However, Beethoven's "Symphony Number 7, Alegretto, 2nd movement" was played twice within the film. It was first played just before John gave his one and only lecture (busy job!) and the second time was whilst John made his way to see his parents and enjoy his last few moments with them. The song conveyed an appropriately wistful atmosphere and fitted the montage of city-goers rushing around in a panic, despite the futility of doing so, quite well. The song also featured in many other movies, notably 'The King's Speech' (2010).

8. Caleb was heartbroken when the aliens said his father, John, was not allowed to join them in the spaceship. What animals did Caleb and Abby bring with them?

From Quiz Knowing

Answer: Rabbits

The aliens said they only chose Caleb and Abby. They wanted to bring the two young kids to some other place to start a new life. So John was not allowed to join his son in the Ezekiel Wheel spaceship. In the ending scene, Caleb and Abby were seen dressed in white clothes. They were running freely on a field. A Tree of Life was also seen in the background. It was the end of the world, yet it was the beginning of Caleb and Abby's lives.
