While some students drew spaceships and robots, Lucinda wrote down two full pages of numbers. Her teacher urged her to finish off her numbers since the time was running out.

The pictures that the students drew would be buried underground in a time capsule. They would be opened 50 years later by some other students.

Fifty years later, in 2009, Caleb got Lucinda's letter and brought it home. His father, John, discovered accidentally that the numbers actually meant something. He wrote down the numbers 911012996 on a white board. It only took him a while to figure out that the numbers referred to the 911 event in the year 2001 that killed 2996 people.

He then went through the list and searched for the remaining dates online. He showed this amazing finding to his colleague the very next day, and said that there would be another three events that would happen soon. One of them would happen the very next day. Of course, his colleague did not believe him. He thought that it was a joke.

On the following day, John was on his way to his son's school to pick him up when he discovered that the remaining numbers referred to the longitude and latitude where the event or disaster would take place. John himself was in that very same location that was written down on the paper. He witnessed a plane crash in front of him. He was totally shocked by this incident. He did not say a word about this to Caleb once he returned home but he was determined to stop the second event from happening.

John Koestler was an astrophysics lecturer at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

During one of his lessons, he discussed the theory of determinism versus randomness in the universe. He posed a question to his students about whether all the things that happened in the universe and on the earth were planned and predetermined before, or if it was just mere coincidence.

Answer: Forever

Since Caleb's mother died, John promised him that both of them would be together forever. So John repeated, "you, me, together, forever", every night before sending his son off to sleep.

Caleb had a hearing problem. Sometimes he had to adjust the volume of his assistive listening device when he heard noises. Little did he know that the aliens were trying to communicate with him. According to him and Abby, the aliens could somehow speak into their minds.

While they were at the museum, John told Diana that Caleb was a sign language expert.

John was on his way to his son's school to pick him up. He witnessed an airplane crash. He was determined to stop the second catastrophic event from happening. He found out the exact location and phoned the authorities. On that day, he went to the location. John was angry because the streets were not sealed off.

He chased a suspect for some time, only to find out that he was only a thief. Suddenly, the underground train derailed, killing many innocent people.

Ezekiel was a famous prophet in the Bible. On the poster, he was taking orders from Jesus. Diana said her mother, Lucinda, liked that poster very much. She would spend her time just staring at the poster.

Diana told John that her mother used to write numbers and letters backwards. She found out that 33 was actually EE. John and Diana went to Lucinda's house to look for more hints. They were shocked to see that the bottom of Lucinda's bed was scratched with the words "everybody else", which was abbreviated as EE in the letter she wrote. Both of them were horrified when they came to realize that the last disaster would eventually kill off everybody else.

Diana was taking Abby and Caleb with her to a cave. Diana thought that the cave was the only way they could be saved from the last disaster. She stopped at a gas station where Caleb called his father using a pay phone. Diana saw this and she talked to John as well. While she was on the phone, someone took her car with Abby and Caleb inside of it.

Realizing this, Diana frantically stole another car nearby and chased her own car. She died tragically when the car was hit by a truck.

Answer: A radioactive solar flare destroyed the Earth's atmosphere.

John published a paper together with his colleague about the radioactive solar flare. Both of them thought that the abnormal readings were mistakes in calculations, but they were actually the warning signs that the flare would reach out to the Earth and destroy its atmosphere.

The hot flare was also the reason why the Earth was becoming hotter and hotter. Eventually, the solar flare killed off all the living things on the Earth.

John visited his father after he sent Caleb off to the aliens. He was reunited with his parents. John said to his father that it was the end of the world but his father said it was not, because they would meet again in heaven.

The aliens said they only chose Caleb and Abby. They wanted to bring the two young kids to some other place to start a new life. So John was not allowed to join his son in the Ezekiel Wheel spaceship. In the ending scene, Caleb and Abby were seen dressed in white clothes.

They were running freely on a field. A Tree of Life was also seen in the background. It was the end of the world, yet it was the beginning of Caleb and Abby's lives.
