The King's Speech Trivia Questions

1. The king of the title sought the help of speech therapist Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush). Who was the actor who received an Oscar for playing this king?

From Quiz
"The King's Speech" Who's Who

Answer: Colin Firth

At the beginning of the film, the then Duke of York was shown to struggle with public speaking due to a pronounced stammer. Logue's methods differed from conventional speech therapists of the 1930s (including one who advocated smoking cigarettes as good for the vocal chords) who had been unable to help the future King George VI. By the end of the film the value of Logue's methods had been realised. Colin Firth has become familiar to fans in such movies as "Bridget Jones's Diary", "Love Actually" and "Kingsman: The Secret Service", as well as the TV mini-series "Pride and Prejudice".

2. The film opens with the Duke and Duchess of York waiting for the Duke's cue to make a speech at which event?

From Quiz The King's Speech

Answer: Closing Empire Exhibition at Wembley Stadium

The Duke and Duchess of York are seen waiting anxiously at the Empire Exhibition at Wembley Stadium. The Duke then tries to make his closing speech and eventually starts but stammers most of the way through.

3. The reigning king at the beginning of the movie was father to the one of the title. Who portrayed this man as unsympathetic to his son's struggles with his stammer?

From Quiz "The King's Speech" Who's Who

Answer: Michael Gambon

King George V was portrayed as a stern parent who expected his children to get on with it and perform their public duties without fuss. Michael Gambon took over the role of Albus Dumbledore in the "Harry Potter" movies after the death of Richard Harris who had played the Hogwarts headmaster in the first two movies. Gambon's other film appearances have included "Paddington" (voice only) and "Amazing Grace".

4. Which actor plays the part of the Duke of York/King George VI?

From Quiz The King's Speech

Colin Firth is an English actor who has won many awards including the 2010 Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his role in "The King's Speech".

5. The elder brother of the title king had a brief reign, abdicating his throne to marry for love. Who played him?

From Quiz "The King's Speech" Who's Who

Answer: Guy Pearce

The affair between King Edward VIII and Mrs Wallis Simpson was shown in the movie to be somewhat superficial and frivolous, but in reality their marriage lasted from 1937 until his death in 1972. Guy Pearce has appeared in movies such as "The Hurt Locker", "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" and "L.A. Confidential", as well as the Australian soap opera "Neighbours" in the 1980s.

6. One therapist suggests that reading with several marbles in the mouth will eventually cure stammering. What else does he suggest?

From Quiz The King's Speech

Answer: Smoking to relax the throat

The therapist suggests smoking will relax the throat and help stop stammering. The marbles almost choke the Duke as he tries to speak. Ironically, King George VI continued to smoke all his life and died in 1952 with lung cancer.

7. The first contact with the speech therapist Logue was made by the wife of the title royal on his behalf. Who played this resourceful woman?

From Quiz "The King's Speech" Who's Who

Answer: Helena Bonham Carter

Queen Elizabeth, who would become known as the Queen Mother after her husband's death, is shown to have made the first visit to Logue's office, and to have accompanied Bertie (as Logue called him over objections that the name was for family only) to all of his appointments. Helena Bonham Carter became a familiar, and frightening, presence in the "Harry Potter" movies, as Bellatrix Lestrange. A versatile performer, her other movie credits include "Fight Club", "Alice in Wonderland" and "Les Miserables".

8. What is the nationality of speech therapist Lionel Logue?

From Quiz "The King's Speech" Who's Who

Answer: Claire Bloom

From Quiz "The King's Speech" Who's Who
