Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The king of the title sought the help of speech therapist Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush). Who was the actor who received an Oscar for playing this king?

Answer: Colin Firth

At the beginning of the film, the then Duke of York was shown to struggle with public speaking due to a pronounced stammer. Logue's methods differed from conventional speech therapists of the 1930s (including one who advocated smoking cigarettes as good for the vocal chords) who had been unable to help the future King George VI. By the end of the film the value of Logue's methods had been realised.

Colin Firth has become familiar to fans in such movies as "Bridget Jones's Diary", "Love Actually" and "Kingsman: The Secret Service", as well as the TV mini-series "Pride and Prejudice".
2. The reigning king at the beginning of the movie was father to the one of the title. Who portrayed this man as unsympathetic to his son's struggles with his stammer?

Answer: Michael Gambon

King George V was portrayed as a stern parent who expected his children to get on with it and perform their public duties without fuss.

Michael Gambon took over the role of Albus Dumbledore in the "Harry Potter" movies after the death of Richard Harris who had played the Hogwarts headmaster in the first two movies. Gambon's other film appearances have included "Paddington" (voice only) and "Amazing Grace".
3. The elder brother of the title king had a brief reign, abdicating his throne to marry for love. Who played him?

Answer: Guy Pearce

The affair between King Edward VIII and Mrs Wallis Simpson was shown in the movie to be somewhat superficial and frivolous, but in reality their marriage lasted from 1937 until his death in 1972.

Guy Pearce has appeared in movies such as "The Hurt Locker", "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" and "L.A. Confidential", as well as the Australian soap opera "Neighbours" in the 1980s.
4. The first contact with the speech therapist Logue was made by the wife of the title royal on his behalf. Who played this resourceful woman?

Answer: Helena Bonham Carter

Queen Elizabeth, who would become known as the Queen Mother after her husband's death, is shown to have made the first visit to Logue's office, and to have accompanied Bertie (as Logue called him over objections that the name was for family only) to all of his appointments.

Helena Bonham Carter became a familiar, and frightening, presence in the "Harry Potter" movies, as Bellatrix Lestrange. A versatile performer, her other movie credits include "Fight Club", "Alice in Wonderland" and "Les Miserables".
5. She was wife to one king and mother to two more. Who played this regal lady?

Answer: Claire Bloom

Queen Mary was seen in the movie at dinner with family, and at her husband's death bed. That her elder son's love life vexed her is implied, if not directly stated.

Miss Bloom's career began in the late 1940s, and has encompassed both television and film, notably "Limelight" with Charlie Chaplin in 1952 and "A Doll's House" with Anthony Hopkins in 1973.
6. Shown in the film as a youngster who enjoyed a story about penguins told by her father (the king of the title), she would follow him as monarch some years after the end of the film. Who portrayed this princess?

Answer: Freya Wilson

Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) and her sister Margaret (Ramona Marquez) are shown as young girls, first enjoying their father's antics pretending to be a penguin when dressed up for a formal occasion, and later as they prepared to move into the palace after he had taken the throne.

Freya Wilson has also appeared in "Jane Eyre" (2011) and the television series "Mr Selfridge".
7. Twice divorced (and American) she was deemed an unsuitable bride for the king. Who played the woman who became a duchess, but not a queen?

Answer: Eve Best

Mrs Wallis Simpson was the woman for whom Edward VIII abdicated. He became the Duke of Windsor, she became his Duchess. They are last seen in the film sitting together as they heard over the radio the news that war had been declared.

Eve Best's career has been mostly on television, including a fairly major role in "Nurse Jackie". Other movie appearances have included "Much Ado about Nothing" (2012) and "Someone You Love" (2014).
8. This prime minister was instrumental in the discussions and political machinations that led to the abdication of a king. Which actor played the role?

Answer: Anthony Andrews

Historically, Stanley Baldwin gave Edward VIII several options regarding Mrs Simpson, and the film attempted to show the consternation that the affair and abdication caused in Great Britain.

Anthony Andrews appeared in the Australian WWI movie "The Lighthorsemen" in 1987 as well as in numerous TV series and mini-series going back to the late 1960s.
9. The 1939 announcement of war with Germany was made by this prime minister. Which of these actors played him?

Answer: Roger Parrott

The make-up department did quite a good job of making Parrott look like Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, whose grim duty it was to inform the country that war had been declared on Germany.

Parrott played Chamberlain again in 2013 in a short film called "Solitary Trees". His other credits have been mainly on television in the United Kingdom.
10. Not yet prime minister during the film, this First Lord of the Admiralty confided in the king of the title that he too had suffered from a speech impediment in his youth. Who played this man, who became known for his wartime speeches?

Answer: Timothy Spall

Newly appointed to his post at the Admiralty, Winston Churchill sought to encourage King George before his first wartime speech to the nation with the knowledge that he, Churchill, had overcome a similar problem.

Known to "Harry Potter" fans as Peter Pettigrew, Timothy Spall has played a variety of roles from a real-life executioner in "Pierrepoint: The Last Hangman" (2005) to artist J.M.W. Turner in "Mr Turner" (2014).
