With rampant looting and violent disorder, martial law has come into effect in most countries around the globe. The film opens with Buck Williams making a newscast, saying, "It's been a week since the greatest disaster the world has ever seen." The core group of protagonists from "Left Behind: The Movie" have formed a group to fight the antichrist, calling themselves the Tribulation Force; they are GNN telejournalist Buck Williams, Pastor Bruce Barnes, pilot Rayford Steele and his daughter Chloe.

Cameron 'Buck' Williams is a magazine writer in the "Left Behind" novel, but the producers of the film decided that having him in the role of a reporter/news anchor/journalist was better for the screen. Having Buck out in the field reporting things live, or being the friendly news anchor face was much better for pacing and was better visually on the big screen than having Buck sit at a desk and write articles.

The Western Wall is sacred to both Muslims and Jews, with both religious groups believing the wall to be a remnant of ancient buildings. The Jewish people believe it to be the only remaining portion of Herod's temple, while the Muslims call it the Al-Buraq Wall, believing it to be the place where Muhammad tied his horse (named Al-Buraq) while he ascended to heaven to speak with God. In the film, no explanation is given by authorities as to how the people were burned at the Wailing Wall, but they have deemed the area off-limits for everyone's protection. What Pastor Barnes finds in scripture is a reference to 'two witnesses' - who he believes are the reason the Wailing Wall has been shut down. Revelation 11: 3-6 says, "And I will appoint my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth." They are "the two olive trees" and the two lampstands, and "they stand before the Lord of the earth. If anyone tries to harm them, fire comes from their mouths and devours their enemies. This is how anyone who wants to harm them must die. They have power to shut up the heavens so that it will not rain during the time they are prophesying; and they have power to turn the waters into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they want."

Harriet 'Hattie' Durham is the flight attendant who (almost) pulls pilot Rayford Steele into an extramarital affair. She accepts a position with the United Nations early in the story, which allows Steele an in for getting the job of Nicolae Carpathia's pilot. Chloe Steele, Rayford's daughter, is played by Janaya Stephens. Irene Steele, the wife of Rayford, is played by Christie MacFayden. Ivy Gold, Buck's personal assistant, is played by Krista Bridges.

We learn a little later in the movie that Rabbi Ben-Judah plans to announce that Nicolae Carpathia fulfills the biblical signs foretelling the coming of the Messiah. Even though Rabbi Ben-Judah is touted as being one of the world's leading religious scholars, he nevertheless falls under Nicolae's mind-altering spell, and is ready to announce the falsehood to the world.

Interesting tidbit: Jack and Rexella Van Impe, who have a television show that discusses the end times, make a cameo on the plane - they are among those who are raptured.

Rayford convinced him that his family was, in fact, with God and that the only way to see them again was to accept Christ himself.

Pilot Ken Ritz is played by Neil Crone. In discussing the mysterious disappearances, Ken expresses his belief that it was aliens that were the cause of the disappearances. He and Buck also discuss the other theories that have been bandied about, including the possibility of a biblical rapture.

His charm and charisma woo others into believing his words, and his call for peace and working towards feeding every mouth on the planet jump him from the presidency of Romania into the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations. Nicolae Carpathia is played by Gordon Currie, whose acting portrays a subtle evil that really captures the character of the antichrist.

Ivy Gold came from New York (the location of GNN's head office) to work with Buck as he stayed in Chicago. Without a place of her own to stay, Buck offered that she could 'crash' at his place. When Chloe comes to visit Buck, she answers the door dressed in a bathrobe, and Chloe makes the assumption that she is Buck's fiancée. They eventually work out the misunderstanding.

Stonegal and Cothran are played by Daniel Pilon and Tony De Santis. They supposedly have orchestrated everything, including Carpathia's rise to power. They own the tracts of land that are to be developed by the Eden formula, which will allow them to control the world's food supply. Unbeknownst to them, however, the real power behind everything is Nicolae himself - the antichrist.

Buck Williams had come to New York to warn his friend Chaim Rosenzweig of the duplicity of Carpathia's supporters. They bring that information up to Carpathia, who promises to reveal their treachery to the world. Then, Buck sees the plans for the rebuilding of Solomon's Temple, and hears Carpathia speak of the seven years of peace with Israel, and he knows that Carpathia IS the antichrist, as Pastor Bruce and Rayford had claimed. Daniel 9:27 (NIV) - "He will confirm a covenant with many for one 'seven'. In the middle of the 'seven' he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him."

The song "Believer" was featured during the scene where Buck Williams finally made the decision to follow Christ, just before entering the meeting with Nicolae Carpathia at the end of the movie. His decision kept him from being affected by Carpathia's brainwashing ability.
