1. Which actors played the parts of Alex Wyler and Kate Forster?

Answer: Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock

Keanu Reeves played the role of Alex Wyler, an architect who moved into the lake house in 2004. On receiving a letter from Kate Forster, played by Sandra Bullock, he was confused by a number of things mentioned in the letter and replied saying that he thought she had the wrong house. They continued to write each other letters, and soon discovered that they were each living two years apart. John Cusack was originally asked to play the part of Alex Wyler but turned it down.

Kate moved out of the lake house as she got a new job in Chicago City Hospital. It was never actually mentioned in the film, but there was a sign on the wall behind Kate in the hospital. We also discovered that it was in that hospital that Alex's father died. Chicago County General was actually the name of the hospital in "ER", Chicago Hope was from TV's "Chicago Hope" and Chicago Grace came from Seattle Grace which was the hospital used in "Greys Anatomy".

The song 'This Never Happened To Me Before' was played at Kate's 2004 birthday party. Kate told Alex that she could dance. Alex accepted the invitation and began dancing with Kate. During the song, a connection was made between the two and they started kissing each other, only to be found by Morgan (Kate's boyfriend) and Mona (Alex's girlfriend).

Alex's brother, Henry, worked for their father as an architect. He was the only person that Alex confided in about Kate. After their father died, Alex and Henry started their own business. Also we learnt that Alex was in fact going to see Kate when he got knocked down.

The film which was filmed in 1946, was being watched by a little girl in the hospital when Kate walked in. The little girl and Kate began a small conversation about better things being around the corner. Kate then started thinking about whether Alex was about to come around the corner or not.

Morgan was Kate's boyfriend in 2004. When Jack ran away, he led Alex and Mona to Morgan's house and Morgan invited them to a surprise party for Kate that night, even though he had only just met the two of them. At the party Kate needed a break and went outside. Alex was already sitting outside and the two of them began to talk. They ended up dancing to Paul McCartney's "This Never Happened Before". Then they kissed for the first time.

This was when she was informed that Alex had died.

Kate was very relieved because she found out that Alex was the one who had died in her arms in 2006, without her knowing who he was. She had to write to Alex before he reached his death in 2006 and she asked him to wait for her. He had to wait two years and then come to the lake house. At the end, we saw Kate at the lake house as Alex drove up - he got out and walked over to Kate who said 'You waited.' - and then they kissed each other.
