Keanu Reeves played the role of Alex Wyler, an architect who moved into the lake house in 2004. On receiving a letter from Kate Forster, played by Sandra Bullock, he was confused by a number of things mentioned in the letter and replied saying that he thought she had the wrong house.

They continued to write each other letters, and soon discovered that they were each living two years apart. John Cusack was originally asked to play the part of Alex Wyler but turned it down.

Answer: Anna

Anna Klyczynski was Kate's colleague and friend at the hospital in which she worked in Chicago. When having a drink to celebrate her youngest child leaving for college, Anna asked Kate why she was always writing in her spare moments. She made this comment on learning that Kate was writing to a man whom she had never actually met.

Answer: Boots

Mona, a colleague of Alex's, had trouble climbing a mound of mud so Alex told her to buy a pair of boots. In the hope of impressing him, Mona bought a pair but got frustrated when he didn't notice. A few minutes later Alex and Mona met Morgan, Kate's 2004 boyfriend, for the first time and Morgan complimented her on her boots.

Answer: His paw

Jack was the dog who turned up at the lake house when Alex was painting the wooden bridge leading to the door of the lake house. He ran through the paint and left his paw prints in the wood. When Alex was leaving the house Jack ran away. Alex let him as he knew the dog would find Kate when she moved in. Kate then took him with her to Chicago when she left the lake house.

He was her best friend and they did everything together, including playing chess.

Answer: Under the floorboards in her apartment

Kate decided to play a game with Alex and asked him to retrieve a copy of Jane Austen's "Persuasion" which her granddad gave her. She left it behind on a train station two years previously. He went and retrieved the book and also got his first look at Kate. Later she found the book under the floorboards of her bedroom in her apartment.

The copy of "Persuasion" that Kate left at the train station was blue and white but the one Alex left under the floorboards was black and orange.

Answer: Chicago City Hospital

Kate moved out of the lake house as she got a new job in Chicago City Hospital. It was never actually mentioned in the film, but there was a sign on the wall behind Kate in the hospital. We also discovered that it was in that hospital that Alex's father died. Chicago County General was actually the name of the hospital in "ER", Chicago Hope was from TV's "Chicago Hope" and Chicago Grace came from Seattle Grace which was the hospital used in "Greys Anatomy".

Answer: Henry

Alex's brother, Henry, worked for their father as an architect. He was the only person that Alex confided in about Kate. After their father died, Alex and Henry started their own business. Towards the end of the film, Kate and Morgan went to their office to see about getting a house renovated and Kate spotted a picture of the lake house.

She asked Henry who did it and on learning that it was Alex she asked for his contact information. Henry then told her that his brother died in a car accident two years ago that very day, the same accident that Kate witnessed at the start of the film. We learnt that the person Kate had tried so hard to revive was Alex.

It was his death that led her back to the lake house in the first place. Also we learnt that Alex was in fact going to see Kate when he got knocked down.

Answer: Jack ran away and Alex and Mona followed him to Morgan's house

Morgan was Kate's boyfriend in 2004. When Jack ran away, he led Alex and Mona to Morgan's house and Morgan invited them to a surprise party for Kate that night, even though he had only just met the two of them. At the party Kate needed a break and went outside. Alex was already sitting outside and the two of them began to talk.

They ended up dancing to Paul McCartney's "This Never Happened Before". Then they kissed for the first time.

Alex and his father didn't really get on but Alex was still very upset when he passed away. His father was in the middle of writing his biography when he died. Kate sent it to Alex in the letter box when she learned of his father's death through hospital records.

The book wasn't due out for a couple of years in Alex's time but Kate didn't think he should have to wait to find out how much he was loved.

Alejandro Agresti directed the film which was based on the Korean film "Il Mare". Il Mare was also the name of the restaurant Alex booked two years in advance so he and Kate could finally meet up. However Alex never showed. Later we found out this is because he was already dead.
