Tootsie Trivia Questions

1. Julie's father, Les, proposes to Dorothy while they're out at a restaurant. What is Dorothy's response to the proposal?

From Quiz
Totally "Tootsie"

Answer: She has to go and think about it.

Dorothy is shocked when Les pulls out a ring and proposes to her. He says that he knows it's fast, but he would really appreciate if she would think about it before she gives him an answer. Desperate to get away from Les, Dorothy says that she needs to leave right away to start thinking it over.

2. What is Teri Garr's character named?

From Quiz One Terrific "Tootsie"

Answer: Sandy

Teri Garr is a scream (literally) in this film. Her hysterical scene in Michael's kitchen when she finds out he's in love with another woman is one of the most brilliant comedic hysteria scenes in the history of cinema, perhaps second only to Gene Wilder's in "The Producers". I suspect some of this scene was ad-libbed and I felt Garr deserved the Oscar for Supporting Actress even more than Lange (the winner) did.

3. Julie has an infant daughter. What is her name?

From Quiz Totally "Tootsie"

Answer: Amy

When Dorothy goes over to Julie's apartment to run lines, she learns that Julie has a baby daughter named Amy. Later in the film when Julie goes to break up with Ron, Dorothy babysits Amy which proves to be more difficult than she thought.

4. What was the name of the soap opera (Oops! I mean "daytime drama") on which Dorothy appeared?

From Quiz One Terrific "Tootsie"

Answer: Southwest General

According to a tour guide, the first episode aired "some 20 years ago". Dr. Brewster was the Chief Surgeon, hilariously played by George Gaynes.

5. Michael once shot a commercial where he played a fruit/vegetable. They ended up going half a day over schedule because he refused to sit down. What fruit/vegetable was Michael playing?

From Quiz Totally "Tootsie"

Answer: Tomato

Michael's agent, George, tells Michael that nobody in New York or Hollywood wants to work with him because he is too difficult. When George brings up the tomato commercial, Michael explains that it was not logical for a tomato to sit down.

6. Bill Murray, in another of the film's inspired performances, played Michael's wacky playwright friend and roommate, Jeff. Jeff wanted to have a theater that was only open when?

From Quiz One Terrific "Tootsie"

Answer: When it was raining

Murray's performance was reportedly largely ad-libbed. Jeff followed this line by saying, "These are people who are alive on the planet"!

7. Michael first presented himself as "Dorothy" to his agent, George Fields, outside a landmark New York restaurant (George, ably played by the film's director, Sydney Pollack, didn't recognize him). What restaurant was it?

From Quiz One Terrific "Tootsie"

Answer: The Russian Tea Room

"Dorothy" followed George into the restaurant and sat down at his booth. Upon learning Michael's identity, George said, "Oh, God! I begged you to get some therapy"! Pollack, an actor before he became a director, was yet another perfect addition to a perfect cast.

8. Michael gives Sandy a box of chocolate-covered what?

From Quiz Totally "Tootsie"

Answer: Cherries

Michael gives Sandy the heart-shaped box of chocolates that he received from Julie's father, Les. He said they were Sandy's favorite - chocolate-covered cherries. If only he knew there was a card from Les attached to the box... Oops!

9. What willowy future star, playing another actress on the soap, unnerved Michael/Dorothy by hanging out in their dressing room in only her bra and panties?

From Quiz One Terrific "Tootsie"

Answer: Geena Davis

Geena Davis went on to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for "The Accidental Tourist". This casting director was brilliant!

10. Julie asks Dorothy if she worries about wearing such heavy makeup on her skin. Why does Dorothy say no?

From Quiz Totally "Tootsie"

Answer: She has a little mustache problem.

Dorothy says that she has a little mustache problem and she's a bit sensitive about it. Later in the film when Julie gives her a quick kiss on the lips, Julie says she can feel that little mustache and maybe Dorothy should cover it up with more makeup.

11. In one of the biggest laughs of the film, the show's producer told the cameraman she wanted to make Dorothy look a little more attractive and asked: "How far can you pull back"? He replied, "How do you feel about _____"?

From Quiz One Terrific "Tootsie"

Answer: Cleveland

This became a running gag. When the producer and directors were in the control room and called for Dorothy's close-ups, everyone chimed in: "Not too close"!

12. What is the name of the play that Michael's roommate, Jeff, is writing?

From Quiz Totally "Tootsie"

Answer: Return to Love Canal

Jeff is writing this play throughout the film and often discusses it with Michael, who has been promised a big part. Michael uses the money he has earned from "Southwest General" to produce the play.

13. John Van Horn tells Dorothy that he's "just a washed-up old has-been". What is Dorothy's response to this?

From Quiz Totally "Tootsie"

Answer: "Were you ever famous?"

This is said when John is in Dorothy's apartment. John says he loves the way Dorothy never lets him get away with anything when she calls him out on never having been famous.

14. At the climax of the film, during the live broadcast of "Emily's Party Scene" on the soap opera, Dorothy "unmasks", revealing herself as Michael, a man. After the cameras were turned off, what did Julie (Jessica Lange) do to Michael?

From Quiz One Terrific "Tootsie"

Answer: Punched him in the stomach

Julie had actually already thrown a drink on Michael (not knowing who he was) when he tried to pick her up at a party earlier in the film. The editing between the soap scene as it is playing out and the other characters watching it is hysterical. What a masterpiece!

15. Who is the character that made Michael realize that he hasn't always treated women with respect?

From Quiz Totally "Tootsie"

Answer: Ron

Ron is the director of "Southwest General" and Michael sees a lot of similarities in the way he and Ron treat women. They forget their names, use pet names, cheat on them, never call them back, etc. Playing Dorothy shows Michael how unfairly women can be treated and he ultimately changes his old ways to become a better person.
