One Terrific "Tootsie" Trivia Quiz

What a funny movie! AFI ranked it as the 2nd funniest of all time. I probably watch it 5-6 times a year. My favorite Dustin Hoffman performance.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Teri Garr's character named?

Answer: Sandy

Teri Garr is a scream (literally) in this film. Her hysterical scene in Michael's kitchen when she finds out he's in love with another woman is one of the most brilliant comedic hysteria scenes in the history of cinema, perhaps second only to Gene Wilder's in "The Producers". I suspect some of this scene was ad-libbed and I felt Garr deserved the Oscar for Supporting Actress even more than Lange (the winner) did.
2. What was the name of the soap opera (Oops! I mean "daytime drama") on which Dorothy appeared?

Answer: Southwest General

According to a tour guide, the first episode aired "some 20 years ago". Dr. Brewster was the Chief Surgeon, hilariously played by George Gaynes.
3. Bill Murray, in another of the film's inspired performances, played Michael's wacky playwright friend and roommate, Jeff. Jeff wanted to have a theater that was only open when?

Answer: When it was raining

Murray's performance was reportedly largely ad-libbed. Jeff followed this line by saying, "These are people who are alive on the planet"!
4. Michael first presented himself as "Dorothy" to his agent, George Fields, outside a landmark New York restaurant (George, ably played by the film's director, Sydney Pollack, didn't recognize him). What restaurant was it?

Answer: The Russian Tea Room

"Dorothy" followed George into the restaurant and sat down at his booth. Upon learning Michael's identity, George said, "Oh, God! I begged you to get some therapy"! Pollack, an actor before he became a director, was yet another perfect addition to a perfect cast.
5. What willowy future star, playing another actress on the soap, unnerved Michael/Dorothy by hanging out in their dressing room in only her bra and panties?

Answer: Geena Davis

Geena Davis went on to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for "The Accidental Tourist". This casting director was brilliant!
6. In one of the biggest laughs of the film, the show's producer told the cameraman she wanted to make Dorothy look a little more attractive and asked: "How far can you pull back"? He replied, "How do you feel about _____"?

Answer: Cleveland

This became a running gag. When the producer and directors were in the control room and called for Dorothy's close-ups, everyone chimed in: "Not too close"!
7. After Dorothy became a success, she appeared on a series of magazine covers in a wonderfully upbeat montage. Which of these real magazines did she NOT appear on the cover of?

Answer: Vogue

Dustin Hoffman looks as if he's having the time of his life in this sequence. Real-life celebrities shared the spotlight: Gene Shalit on the "TV Guide" cover and a reportedly quite shy Andy Warhol for the cover of "People".
8. When did Michael really get an idea of how differently (and sometimes more shabbily) women are treated than men?

Answer: all of these

This film had a lot of feminist elements. Michael saw his male behaviour reflected in Ron and other men and he didn't like it and subtly changed over the course of the film. When Ron (Dabney Coleman) told Dorothy he never promised Julie he'd be faithful, Michael/Dorothy smiled and whispered, "I understand you a lot better than you think I do."
9. At the climax of the film, during the live broadcast of "Emily's Party Scene" on the soap opera, Dorothy "unmasks", revealing herself as Michael, a man. After the cameras were turned off, what did Julie (Jessica Lange) do to Michael?

Answer: Punched him in the stomach

Julie had actually already thrown a drink on Michael (not knowing who he was) when he tried to pick her up at a party earlier in the film. The editing between the soap scene as it is playing out and the other characters watching it is hysterical. What a masterpiece!
10. Dustin Hoffman kept all of his Dorothy costumes.

Answer: True

Hoffman has often spoken of how this role helped him get in touch with his feminine side. How in touch? Only his hairdresser knows for sure.
