Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Natalie Portman, the truth seeker, says "We'd be living a lie. One we couldn't keep, even if we wanted to." in which of her appearances?

Answer: Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002)

"Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones" is the continuing saga of Anakin Skywalker's quest to become a jedi. Jedis have a strict code of laws they must follow, one of which is to refrain from becoming emotionally attached. Anakin, played by Hayden Christensen, falls in love with the senator from Naboo, Padme Amidala, played by Natalie Portman, and they form a romantic relationship.

He believes they can have a secret marriage. Padme says the line to Anakin when he presses her on the marriage issue.
2. "I'm alone here, as you can see, with my baby." This is said by Natalie Portman, as a mother, in which film?

Answer: Cold Mountain (2003)

Natalie makes a brief appearance in this Civil War era film. Jude Law's Inman escapes from a battle and is making his way back home to his one true love. Along the way he takes shelter at the home of a young mother, played by Portman. She will not permit him to enter, saying this line.

He tries to offer his gun to her for protection, to which she replies "I don't want it. If I had my way they'd take metal altogether out of this world. Every blade, every gun."
3. In what film did a cold Natalie Portman state "And now all of a sudden, it's cold, so cold that everything is freezing over."?

Answer: Paris, I Love You (2006)

"Paris, I Love You" is a collection of short love stories. Natalie's character is talking over the phone to her blind boyfriend in the 'True' short. The short recalls the whole of their relationship, as she's apparently breaking up with him. This line comes after she stated that, in the beginning, everything was warm and new, but over the time things have grown cold, a reference to the seasons and relationships.
4. "Where is this love? I can't see it, I can't touch it. I can't feel it. I can hear it. I can hear some words, but I can't do anything with your easy words." Can you name the film where Portman seeks the love?

Answer: Closer (2004)

My favorite Portman film, "Closer", a very risque and controversial film about relationships, follows two separate couples who, through the course of the film, have issues of fidelity. In this quote, Portman's Alice is confronting Jude Law's character about his "I love you", trying to trust him when he's not around. To her, he talks a good game, but doesn't always walk the talk.
5. "Is life always this hard, or is it just when you're a kid?" This early Natalie Portman line shouldn't be as hard as her life was in this film. Which is it?

Answer: Leon: The Professional (1994)

This was Natalie's breakout role, playing a preteen who befriends a "cleaner", Leon. She decides to become a hit (wo)man, with Leon's help, so that she can go after the man who killed her family in a drug sting. Mathilda is just getting to know Leon at the point she makes this comment. The soft spoken Leon (Jean Reno) replies simply, "always like this".
6. "Do you got a girlfriend?" In which film was Natalie Portman looking for a boyfriend?

Answer: Mars Attacks! (1996)

Most people probably don't even remember that Natalie was in this Tim Burton spoof about Martians coming to Earth and destroying everything. But that is a young Natalie Portman as the president's daughter. After the day is saved, Taffy is the lone surviving member of the administration, so it's her job to bestow the medals to the heroes.

These are the last few lines from the film, which she says to the young Lucas Haas character as she puts the medal around his neck. He gets the last line in the film, a simple "No" in reply.
7. Which Natalie Portman film sees her saying "Whatever happens in the end, I don't wanna lose you as my friend."?

Answer: Hotel Chevalier (2007)

In the short before "The Darjeeling Limited", a man holds a conversation with a former lover, who shows up in Paris, following him. It turns out that she's on her way up to his room, and he struggles with allowing her back into his life, before giving in.

They are getting ready to make love when Natalie's character makes this statement. Jason Schwartzman's character replies with a very funny "I promise, I will never be your friend. No matter what. Ever."
8. "He's defending me. He's my knight in shining armor." In which of these films did Natalie find her hero?

Answer: Garden State (2004)

"Garden State" is the story of a young struggling actor returning from Hollywood to his small town for his mother's funeral. There, he meets up with old friends and makes a new friend, an eccentric young woman, played by Portman. Zach Braff's Large stands up for Sam's innocence in this moment, when his friends may be taking them somewhere he deems unfit for her.

The line is one of the references to knights, which also includes a friend of Large who works at a Renaissance restaurant and dresses up as a knight.

The friend, Tim, had earlier been found out to have had relations with another of Large's friend's mother. Thus the retort "Don't talk about knights around Mark, it's a sore subject." becomes one of the many funny moments in what could have been a very depressing film based on the subject matter.
9. "What we've been doing lately is smoking massive amounts of drugs, binging on Entemmann's and listening to old Pink Floyd CD's." Which film had a very clean and sober Portman jokingly referring to drug use?

Answer: Beautiful Girls (1996)

In her 3rd film, Natalie plays a young girl in a small town. In the film, Timothy Hutton plays a man returning for his high school reunion. He's reached a lull in his life, between his job and his relationship; he's not who he used to be. When Willie returns to his town, all his friends are basically the same, just older.

He finds solace in the only mature person he finds, twelve year old Marty (Portman). He is ridiculed for this connection with a Lolita, but it is a very gripping friendship the two develop in the course of the film. Through the innocence of the young child, he learns that he doesn't have to be like his friends, nor does he have to completely grow up, just because he's older. The quote comes when Willie inquires what Marty and her friends do for fun at her age as he's getting to know her.

Her straightforward replay has him taken aback before she assures him that it is a joke, and he should lighten up.
10. "I lied. It wasn't true, I love you. It's just I lied because I thought you deserved something better." Natalie Portman lied about love in which of her films?

Answer: Where the Heart Is (2000)

This film follows Novalee as she's abandoned, pregnant and penniless, by her boyfriend in nowhere Oklahoma. She has the baby in Wal-Mart and becomes a little famous. She makes a few good friends and moves into the town, where she tries to care for her child and make the best of her life. All through her struggles and triumphs, the town librarian, Forney, becomes her best friend. Eventually they have a night together in which he professes his love for her and asks if she loves him too.

She says no, and heartbroken, he heads to Boston to get his degree. Eventually she realizes what she's lost and Novalee goes across the country trying to apologize to Forney and get him to come back home, which is when this quote comes into play.
