Star Trek III: The Search for Spock Trivia Questions

1. Kruge (Christopher Lloyd) orders his gunner to target a specific area of the Federation starship orbiting the Genesis Planet. Which area?

From Quiz
"Star Trek III: The Search For Spock," Part 2

Answer: the engine

The gunner destroys the USS GRISSOM with a single shot, instead! Kruge kills his gunner where he sits for this mistake.

2. In which category is Leonard Nimoy noted in the film's opening credits?

From Quiz "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock," Part 1

Answer: director

In the opening title sequence, Harve Bennett is given sole writing credit, and Nimoy is not listed as one of the producers. And, even though he clearly appears in the film, Nimoy is not credited as an actor in the opening titles...probably to withhold the "surprise" that Spock would, by the end of the film, be fully resurrected. Nimoy is only named as the director of the film in the opening credits.

3. Dr. David Marcus (Merritt Butrick) admits to Lt. Saavik (Robin Curtis) that Genesis is a failure because of a certain component he used in its make-up. What's the problematic component?

From Quiz "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock," Part 2

Answer: proto-matter

Apparently, protomatter is a highly unstable substance. The Genesis Planet winds up blowing itself to smithereens just hours after David's admission.

4. What's the name of the admiral who informs Kirk and company that the ENTERPRISE will be retired from duty?

From Quiz "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock," Part 1

Answer: Morrow

Robert Hooks plays Admiral Morrow, who seems to be quite friendly with Jim Kirk in addition to being his superior officer. (And before anyone gets jumpy to correct me here -- yes, they're both admirals, but it's pretty clear that Morrow is Kirk's supervisor. In the bar where Kirk tries to get Morrow to let him go to the Genesis Planet, Morrow says, "You're one of my best officers.")

5. Kirk attempts to taunt Kruge by making light of the fact that almost all of Kruge's crew was killed when Kirk destroyed the ENTERPRISE. Finish his line: "Sorry about your men, but as we say on Earth..."

From Quiz "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock," Part 2

Answer: "...c'est la vie."

Pretty cold...but then, Kirk had just been forced to listen to the death of his son at the hands of the Klingons, so his insensitivity may be warranted.

6. What's the name of the science vessel to which Lt. Saavik (Robin Curtis) and Dr. David Marcus have been reassigned sometime between the end of "Star Trek II" and the beginning of this film?

From Quiz "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock," Part 1

Answer: USS GRISSOM

Presumably named for Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom, one of the "Mercury Seven" astronauts.

7. Kirk and Kruge engage in hand-to-hand combat as the Genesis Planet falls apart around them. What is the last word that Kruge hears, as Kirk kicks him in the face, off of a precipice, and into a lava stream to his death far below?

From Quiz "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock," Part 2

Answer: you

In a classic "watch Shatner overact" moment, Kirk times his repeated kicks to Kruge's face with overly stressed words: "*I* [kick] have *had* [kick] enough of *you* [kick]!"

8. Kirk hosts a get-together for most of his command crew in his apartment in San Francisco. What simple toast does he offer, once everyone has a beverage?

From Quiz "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock," Part 1

Answer: "Absent friends."

Obviously a reference to Spock...and perhaps McCoy, who can't attend because he's in a psychiatric hospital!

9. After Kirk kills Kruge, he and Spock beam up to the Klingon bird-of-prey. How many Klingons are left aboard the ship at this point?

From Quiz "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock," Part 2

Answer: one

Only Maltz (played by "Night Court" star John Laroquette, by the way!) is still alive. Kirk promises to kill him later, but we never see him again after he's thrown in the brig. Whatever happened to that character, anyway? There's no mention of him in the next movie!

10. Which member of the crew never shows up at Kirk's little get-together?

From Quiz "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock," Part 1

Answer: Montgomery Scott

Sulu, Chekhov, and Uhura are present for the toast mentioned above. Then, the doorbell rings, and Kirk says, "Ah -- Mr. Scott." He's wrong, though: it's Ambassador Sarek at the door. Sarek basically shoos the other guests out of Kirk's apartment, and he and Kirk have a private conversation. Scotty never makes an appearance at all.

11. Once Spock and McCoy have finally been brought to Vulcan, Sarek (Mark Lenard) formally asks the High Priestess to perform an ancient rite. What is it called?

From Quiz "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock," Part 2

Answer: fal-tor-pan

Pon farr is the Vulcan "mating fever" that hits adult males every seven years. Kolinahr is the ceremony obliterating all emotion that Spock came very close to completing in the first "Trek" film. Sha Ka Ree is the name of the Vulcan paradise sought out by Spock's half-brother Sybok in the abysmal "Star Trek V."

12. Sarek (Mark Lenard) informs Kirk that Spock was trained to pass on his spiritual and intellectual "spirit" to another if he suspected that he was about to die. What is the Vulcan word for this "spirit"?

From Quiz "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock," Part 1

Answer: katra

Sarek originally thought that Kirk was the keeper of Spock's "katra," but it's McCoy who actually holds that dubious honor.

13. What is the more "common" name for the ritual that Sarek is requesting?

From Quiz "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock," Part 2

Answer: the re-fusion

Sarek: "I ask for fal-tor-pan...the re-fusion."

14. Dr. McCoy (DeForrest Kelley) attends a moderately seedy bar in order to make a shady deal. What can NOT be seen or heard in this bar?

From Quiz "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock," Part 1

Answer: Orion dancing girls

When McCoy enters the bar, he sees two people playing what looks like a 3-D vector graphics video game depicting two 20th-century biplanes shooting at each other, as well as a couple playing with several Tribbles (the infamous "fuzzballs" from the original TV series) at their table. Throughout the sequence, we're tortured with some truly awful cheesy synth music. No Orion girls in sight -- and they'd be easy to spot, given that they have green skin, wear very little, and generally sex up any scene they're in.

15. What is the name of the High Priestess of Vulcan?

From Quiz "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock," Part 2

Answer: T'Lar

T'Pau was the High Priestess in the TV episode "Amok Time." In that same episode we met T'Pring, Spock's betrothed who wound up with another man entirely. I made up "T'Ling". T'Lar is played by Dame Judith Anderson.

16. Just before the end credits roll, a title card appears. What does it say?

From Quiz "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock," Part 2

Answer: "...And The Adventure Continues..."

And continue it would, to the tune of seven more movies, hundreds of hours of television, and tens of thousands of pages of fiction. Live long and prosper!

17. What is the name of the commanding officer of the USS EXCELSIOR?

From Quiz "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock," Part 1

Answer: Styles

Captain Styles is played by James B. Sikking, of "Hill Street Blues" and "Doogie Howser, M.D." fame. Captain Esteban was the C.O. of the ill-fated GRISSOM; Captain Terrell commanded the RELIANT until it was taken over by Khan in "Star Trek II."
