Abbey Road Trivia Questions

1. Which two songs on The Beatles "Abbey Road" album were released as a double A-sided single in the UK?

From Quiz
Anatomy of an Album: "Abbey Road"

Answer: Something/Come Together

"Something" was written and sung by George Harrison. It was the first song written by him to be released as a Beatles A-side. "Come Together" was written by John Lennon but credited to Lennon/McCartney. "Something/Come Together" was a number four hit on the UK singles chart in 1969. "Something" reached number three and "Come Together" was number one for one week on the Billboard Hot 100 the same year. "Something" was inspired not as many had thought by his wife at the time, Pattie Boyd, but by the singer Ray Charles. "Come Together" was inspired by Timothy (Turn on, tune in, drop out) Leary's 1969 campaign for governor of California called "Come together, join the party" against Ronald Reagan. Unfortunately for Leary his campaign came to nothing and he was sent to prison for possession of marijuana.

2. What soft drink was mentioned in the lyrics to "Come Together"?

From Quiz Remembering the Beatles - "Abbey Road"

Answer: Coca-Cola

This song was written by John Lennon at the request of Timothy Leary, the LSD advocate who had decided to run for office with the campaign slogan of "Come Together". Lennon wrote the song in May of 1969 during his famous Montreal "bed-in" with Yoko Ono. Leary was arrested and jailed before he could use the song, so it was recorded by The Beatles. "He shoot Coca Cola, he say I know you, you know me, One thing I can tell you is you got to be free. Come together, right now, over me."

3. When was the entire album "Abbey Road" recorded?

From Quiz The Beatles' "Abbey Road" Album

Answer: 1969

Save for a few re-recordings, editing sessions and the new song "I Me Mine," which came out on "Let it Be," "Abbey Road" was the Beatles' last album to be recorded before Paul announced the group's separation on April 10th, 1970, nine days after "I Me Mine" was recorded.

4. On the cover, who is pictured with a cigarette in his right hand?

5. In track three on the "Abbey Road" album "Maxwell's Silver Hammer", what are the names of the two girls screaming from the gallery?

From Quiz Anatomy of an Album: "Abbey Road"

Answer: Rose and Valerie

"Maxwell's Silver Hammer" was written by Paul McCartney but credited to Lennon/McCartney. Paul Sings: "Rose and Valerie, screaming from the gallery Say he must go free (Maxwell must go free) The judge does not agree And he tells them so, o, o, o" John Lennon described "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" as more of Paul's granny music. After a car crash which caused him to be absent from the Abbey Road recording studio for eight days, John Lennon was back in the recording studio. Along with the other Beatles he was not very happy about how long Paul McCartney was taking on this track.

6. How did the singer in "Something" answer the question, "will my love grow"?

From Quiz Remembering the Beatles - "Abbey Road"

Answer: I don't know

Written by George Harrison after hearing James Taylor's "Something in the Way She Moves", this was the only Beatles song that Frank Sinatra would sing. "You're asking me will my love grow", with "I don't know, I don't know."

Ringo was inspired to write the song when on a boat in the Mediterranean Sea owned by actor/comedian Peter Sellers. The captain explained to Ringo how octopuses gather up shiny objects and stones to build their gardens with. 29. What is the missing word in the title of this song from the "Abbey Road" Album, "________ Pam"?

From Quiz Anatomy of an Album: "Abbey Road"

Answer: Polythene

"Polythene Pam" was written by John Lennon but credited to Lennon/McCartney. John sings: "Get a dose of her in jackboots and kilt She's killer-diller when she's dressed to the hilt She's the kind of a girl that makes the News of the World Yes you could say she was attractively built" The "News of the World" was a UK national Sunday newspaper (scandal sheet) first published in 1843. It was closed down in 2011 by owner Rupert Murdoch because of the phone hacking scandal that engulfed it. John Lennon described this song as a bit of crap he wrote in India. It was inspired by a girl he met at someones flat/apartment who dressed in polythene. The title is named for a Beatles' fan from the Cavern club in Liverpool Pat Hodgett. Her nickname was Polythene Pat, because she used to eat polythene. She would eat it plain or cold after burning it. It is always nice to know the history of songs but this one must be one of the strangest. John Lennon sings the song with a very pronounced Liverpool (scouse) accent.

30. How did "Polythene Pam" look?

Answer: Like a man

Two women were John Lennon's inspirations for "Polythene Pam". One was a fan from The Beatles' old club days who ate polythene and was know as Polythene Pat. The other was a girl named Stephanie who dressed in a polythene bag. "Well you should see Polythene Pam, she's so good looking but she looks like a man. Well, you should see her in drag dressed in a polythene bag, Yes you should see Polythene Pam, Yeah, yeah, yeah."
