It's More Than a Feeling

The album "Boston", released in the US on August 25, 1976, is one of the greatest selling albums of all time. In 2003, it was certified as a 17x platinum album. "More Than a Feeling" is the first track on the album.

One of my favorites from their self-titled debut album released in 1976. According to the Guinness World Record Book, "Boston" held the world record for the highest selling debut album of ALL TIME until dethroned in 2009 by Alanis Morisette's debut album "Jagged Little Pill."

3. Who is considered to be the "brains" behind the group?

From Quiz Hitchin' a ride with the band Boston

Answer: Tom Scholz

Tom Scholz was a keyboardist playing for any band he could in the Boston area while he attended MIT. Barry Goudreau was the lead guitarist of a group called Mother's Milk and asked Tom to play with them. Tom then learned to play guitar during this time and began writing songs. After graduating from MIT he landed a job with Polaroid. In his spare time, he built a 12 track mixer and began recording some of his music with the help of drummer Jim Masdea. Finding the right vocal talent proved to be a problem until he found the late Brad Delp. After a couple of years of shopping the demo tapes around, Tom found a record company willing to sign him. Epic Records wanted Tom and the rest of his band to re record the songs in Epic's Los Angeles studios. Tom felt that the tapes were fine the way they were since he had spent hours upon hours fine tuning them. Eventually, Brad, Barry, bassist Fran Sheehan and new drummer Sib Hashian did go to L. A. and recorded a song for show. Meanwhile Tom continued to tinker with the original tapes. It was the demo tapes which made up most of the original debut album, simply titled "Boston". Except for Tom, none of the original members appear on all of the albums.

The sixth track off 1978's "Don't Look Back" album. Always a crowd-pleaser at Boston's concerts.

12. Who does all of the vocals on the first album?

From Quiz Hitchin' a ride with the band Boston

Answer: Brad Delp

Brad Delp did all of the vocals on "Boston" as well as on "Don't Look Back" and "Third Stage". He was working on another project with Barry Goudreau when "Walk On" was being produced. Speculation has it that they were lip synching everything because they sounded too much like their albums and you can't sing lead, background and harmony vocals at the same time. Kimberley Dahme did various vocals on "Corporate America" including a song of her own. David Sykes played bass and did do some vocals at one time or another and Fran Cosmo did vocals for the fourth album "Walk On" and shared vocals with the late Brad Delp on the sixth album "Corporate America". Brad was found dead in his house on Mar 9, 2007. A long time sufferer of depression, it was determined that he took his own life.

17. How many songs were recorded in the Epic Records studio?

In an interesting deviation from what was normal, after Tom Scholz managed to garner enough interest in his demo tapes, the Epic chiefs wanted Boston to recreate their unique sound in the studio. Tom had spent hundreds of hours perfecting the demos and felt they would be sufficient for the album. The original producer agreed, in part, with Tom and managed to snooker the studio executives by flying the other four members of the band to LA where they looked busy in studio recording "Let Me Take You Home Tonight" while Tom finished up the demos at the Hideaway Studio.
