Ben Folds Trivia Questions

1. What was going on the night Ben Folds and his band recorded the backing vocals for the song "Bastard"?

From Quiz
Ben Folds Ultimate Quiz

Answer: 2004 Presidential Election

This is commented on by Ben on the "Making of Songs For Silverman" DVD that comes with the Limited Edition copy of the album.

2. A little Ben Folds "Math": What is the age difference between Yuko and Hiro?

From Quiz Ben Folds's Songs

Answer: 29 years

The lyrics of the slightly rarer "Hiro's Song" include the lines "My name is Hiro, I am 51" and "Her name is Yuko she is 22" 51-22=29

3. "I know it seems that I don't care, but something in me does, I swear." Which Ben Folds song do these lyrics come from?

From Quiz Ben Folds Lyrics

Answer: Narcolepsy

From "The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner" by Ben Folds Five, and played solo on "Ben Folds Live". It is one of my favorite Ben songs, about emotional detachment: "I get upset or happy, I go to sleep. Nothing hurts when I go to sleep."

4. What is Ben Folds full name?

From Quiz Ben Folds

Answer: Benjamin Scott Folds

Benjamin Scott Folds was born on September 12th, 1966 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

5. Who performed guest backing vocals on the song "Time"?

From Quiz Ben Folds Ultimate Quiz

Answer: Weird Al Yankovic

Weird Al directed Ben's "Rockin' The Suburbs" video and the two had always been good friends. Yankovic happened to be in town the day they were recording the song and Folds invited him to join in.

6. A little Ben Folds "Poetry": While the words "he", "she", and "uses" appear frequently in the song "She Don't Use Jelly", only one word ever follows the combination of "He uses..." What is this word?

From Quiz Ben Folds's Songs

Answer: magazines

After the character in the song (a cover of a Flaming Lips original) gets back from his shows, he blows his nose not using tissues, napkins, or his sleeve, but rather the grosser and (slightly) more abrasive "magazines".

7. What hilarious song do these lyrics come from? "Grew a moustache and a mullet. Got a job at Chick-Fil-A. Citing artistic differences, the band broke up in May..."

From Quiz Ben Folds Lyrics

Answer: Army

About how Ben thought about joining the army in college -- "I dropped out and joined a band instead..." This also is from "The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner" and "Ben Folds Live". In concert, he split the audience into two parts to sing the saxophone and trumpet parts -- when I saw him, saxophones were stage right, and trumpets stage left! Great audience participation song!

8. What is the first track of the "Rockin' The Suburbs" album?

From Quiz Ben Folds

Answer: Annie Waits

One of my favourite tracks on the album. Ben makes it clear straight away that he does not need Darren and Rob to be successful.

9. Sticking with Weird Al for the moment, what was the name of the Weird Al song that Ben Folds played on "Poodle Hat"?

From Quiz Ben Folds Ultimate Quiz

Answer: Why Does This Always Happen To Me?

The song parodies the style the Ben Folds has made famous and the harmonies that Yankovic came up with are eerily similar without being identical. Folds was going to sing as well but his contract prevented him from singing on an album produced by a different company.

10. A little Ben Folds "Foreign Languages": What language does the character in the song "Your Redneck Past" DEFINITELY not speak well?

From Quiz Ben Folds's Songs

Answer: French

Based on the botched pronunciation of some of the words in the song, our buddy needs to go back to French class and practice that embouchure! The lyrics are "Désolé je suis américain. Please cook my steak again. Je suis américain. Désolé je ne parle pas français." Translated: "Sorry, I'm American. Please cook my steak again. I'm American. (Must've been trying steak tartare-a raw meat dish served in France) Sorry, I don't speak French." Personally, I assume that within the context of the song Ben is discussing the problems of American egocentricism, shortsightedness, and unwillingness to try new things. The title of the song itself suggests this.

11. "You'll be a lady soon, but until then, you gotta do what I say." What title female is Ben singing about?

From Quiz Ben Folds Lyrics

Answer: Gracie

A very cute and touching song, in my opinion, written for his daughter, from "Songs For Silverman". When I saw him live, he explained that his son had gotten a song on the last album and now it was his twin Gracie's turn. He didn't say, but I would think his son's song is "Still Fighting It" from "Rockin' the Suburbs".

12. What was the release date of the "Rockin' The Suburbs" album?

From Quiz Ben Folds

Answer: September 11, 2001

"Rockin' The Suburbs" was released on the same day as the September 11 tragedy.

13. Who is tne song "Gracie" about?

From Quiz Ben Folds Ultimate Quiz

Answer: Ben's daughter

"Gracie" is a sister song to "Still Fighting It" which appeared on the "Rockin' The Suburbs" album. "Still Fighting It" was for Ben's son Louis and his song "Gracie" was for his daughter Gracie.

14. Which song gives the following advice? "You worry there might not be anything at all inside, but that you're worried should tell you that's not right."

From Quiz Ben Folds Lyrics

Answer: Jane

Another one from "The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner" and "Ben Folds Live". This is also one of my favorite Ben songs, which tells a friend to just be herself: "Jane, be Jane."

15. Some "Rockin' The Suburbs" lyrics! In "Not The Same", what follows "and there you stayed..."?

From Quiz Ben Folds

Answer: till morning came

First verse is... "You took a trip and climbed a tree at Robert Sledge's party. And there you stayed till morning came but you were not the same after that."

16. One track on "Songs For Silverman" has the word "Food" in it. What is the full name of this song?

From Quiz Ben Folds Ultimate Quiz

Answer: Prison Food

"Prison Food" is the final track on the US, UK and Australian versions of Ben Folds "Songs For Silverman" album.

17. A little Ben Folds "Home Economics": You're in class and you want to make an outfit for Ben's "Still Fighting It" music video, and you want it to be lyrically attentive. What are you going to use to make his shirt?

From Quiz Ben Folds's Songs

Answer: Brown polyester

The first line of the song is "Good morning, son. I am a bird wearing a brown polyester shirt." He wrote this song for his son after his son was born and included it on his "Rockin' the Suburbs" album. His wife, Frally, also directed the ACTUAL music video for the song, which featured both Ben and his son, and a rather humorous scene of Ben getting tripped by a running dog.

18. "If you really wanna see me, check the papers and the TV. Look who's telling who what to do. Yeah, kiss my ass... goodbye." Which song by Ben includes such a reproach?

From Quiz Ben Folds Lyrics

Answer: One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces

From "Whatever and Ever Amen" and "Ben Folds Live". A retaliation to bullies: "Vic, you stole my lunch money, made me cry. Jane, remember second grade? You said you couldn't stand my face. Rather than kiss me you said you'd rather die. Now I'm big and important. One angry dwarf and 200 solemn faces are you!"

19. Finish this line from Carrying Cathy - "so obsessed was I and..."

From Quiz Ben Folds

Answer: self-absorbed

First verse is... "Her window was hung like a painting. She worried it might come to life. She stared for hours. So obsessed was I and self-absorbed that I Didn't see that she was Crying."

20. Who makes a guest appearance with a monkey in Ben's video for "Landed"?

From Quiz Ben Folds Ultimate Quiz

Answer: William Shatner

Shatner and Folds have been good friends for a long time now. Shatner did spoken voice on Ben's album "Fear Of Pop- Volume One" and later, Folds did the music for Shatner's infamous spoken word album. Shatner is a techie with a bad wig on in the clip.

21. Which song by Ben includes these lyrics? "Once you wanted revolution. Now you're the institution. How's it feel to be the man? It's no fun to be the man."

From Quiz Ben Folds Lyrics

Answer: The Ascent of Stan

From "Rockin' the Suburbs". I'm not really sure what it means, but Stan is a "textbook hippie man" who has gone against his hippie ways.

22. Who does Ben Folds NOT "Rock the Suburbs" like?

From Quiz Ben Folds

Answer: Queen

In each chorus Ben Folds eludes that he is as popular as these people were, except that "they were talented" because they did not rely on computers to fix their music up.

23. What year was "Songs For Silverman" released internationally?

From Quiz Ben Folds Ultimate Quiz

Answer: 2005

The album was released in Australia on April 12 of 2005. It was then released in the UK, US and Japan between April 19 and April 26 depending on how shipping was going. The Limited Editions were released 4 days late in Australia as they were accidentally sent to Japan!

24. "I don't believe in God, so I can't be saved." In which song (not one of his lighter moments) does Ben reveal this?

From Quiz Ben Folds Lyrics

Answer: Mess

From "The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner". It continues, "All alone as I've learned to be, in this mess I have made." A song about a failed relationship and its toll on the narrator.

25. Who is the guest artist on "Fred Jones Part 2"?

From Quiz Ben Folds

Answer: John McCrea

There was uncertainty as to whether McCrea would be able to appear on the album, but eventually he was allowed to sing harmonies on the track.

26. What country did Ben Folds tour the week leading up to the release of "Songs For Silverman"?

From Quiz Ben Folds Ultimate Quiz

Answer: Australia

I saw Ben at the Forum in Melbourne and he signed my "Rockin' The Suburbs" cover! The album was released in Australia on April 12, 2005.

27. A little Ben Folds "Geography": Where hasn't Uncle Walter been?

From Quiz Ben Folds's Songs

Answer: The Nile

Uncle Walter is quite the raconteur! (storyteller) With "tobacco juice rolling down his chin" he tells his nephews and nieces fascinating stories of what he's done in his life (while never leaving his tattered armchair, no less!) like "getting rich from a mail-order scheme". "What a perfect world would be if he was President!" Apparently, when Ben was in high school, he was in a band with some college students who would leave him with one of their uncles (named Walter) and the inspiration for this song was gleaned through these visits.

28. "Give me my money back! Give me my money back, you bitch!" In what song does Ben sing so directly?

From Quiz Ben Folds Lyrics

Answer: Song for the Dumped

From "Whatever and Ever Amen". Quite an appropriate title! Leave it to Ben Folds to be just that direct in song. But his fans seem to love him for it!

29. What song did Ben write which was a song about how much he hates recording studios and how you have to meet deadlines?

From Quiz Ben Folds

Answer: One Down

This song became a regular on Ben's 2002 "Ben and His Piano" tour of America and later appeared on "Ben Folds Live".

30. There are a few covers on "Supersunnyspeedgraphic The LP". Who did the original version of a song from the album which I can not name on this particular website?

From Quiz Ben Folds Ultimate Quiz

Answer: Dr. Dre

The lyrics of the song in question are slightly alitered to the word "me and my homie Dr. Dre" as a tip of the hat to the original performer.
