Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I know it seems that I don't care, but something in me does, I swear." Which Ben Folds song do these lyrics come from?

Answer: Narcolepsy

From "The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner" by Ben Folds Five, and played solo on "Ben Folds Live". It is one of my favorite Ben songs, about emotional detachment: "I get upset or happy, I go to sleep. Nothing hurts when I go to sleep."
2. What hilarious song do these lyrics come from? "Grew a moustache and a mullet. Got a job at Chick-Fil-A. Citing artistic differences, the band broke up in May..."

Answer: Army

About how Ben thought about joining the army in college -- "I dropped out and joined a band instead..." This also is from "The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner" and "Ben Folds Live". In concert, he split the audience into two parts to sing the saxophone and trumpet parts -- when I saw him, saxophones were stage right, and trumpets stage left! Great audience participation song!
3. "You'll be a lady soon, but until then, you gotta do what I say." What title female is Ben singing about?

Answer: Gracie

A very cute and touching song, in my opinion, written for his daughter, from "Songs For Silverman". When I saw him live, he explained that his son had gotten a song on the last album and now it was his twin Gracie's turn. He didn't say, but I would think his son's song is "Still Fighting It" from "Rockin' the Suburbs".
4. Which song gives the following advice? "You worry there might not be anything at all inside, but that you're worried should tell you that's not right."

Answer: Jane

Another one from "The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner" and "Ben Folds Live". This is also one of my favorite Ben songs, which tells a friend to just be herself: "Jane, be Jane."
5. "If you really wanna see me, check the papers and the TV. Look who's telling who what to do. Yeah, kiss my ass... goodbye." Which song by Ben includes such a reproach?

Answer: One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces

From "Whatever and Ever Amen" and "Ben Folds Live". A retaliation to bullies: "Vic, you stole my lunch money, made me cry. Jane, remember second grade? You said you couldn't stand my face. Rather than kiss me you said you'd rather die. Now I'm big and important. One angry dwarf and 200 solemn faces are you!"
6. Which song by Ben includes these lyrics? "Once you wanted revolution. Now you're the institution. How's it feel to be the man? It's no fun to be the man."

Answer: The Ascent of Stan

From "Rockin' the Suburbs". I'm not really sure what it means, but Stan is a "textbook hippie man" who has gone against his hippie ways.
7. "I don't believe in God, so I can't be saved." In which song (not one of his lighter moments) does Ben reveal this?

Answer: Mess

From "The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner". It continues, "All alone as I've learned to be, in this mess I have made." A song about a failed relationship and its toll on the narrator.
8. "Give me my money back! Give me my money back, you bitch!" In what song does Ben sing so directly?

Answer: Song for the Dumped

From "Whatever and Ever Amen". Quite an appropriate title! Leave it to Ben Folds to be just that direct in song. But his fans seem to love him for it!
9. In which song does Ben tell this story? "Next door, there's an old man who lived to his nineties and one day passed away in his sleep. His wife, she stayed for a couple of days and passed away."

Answer: The Luckiest

From "Rockin' the Suburbs" and "Ben Folds Live". A very sweet love song; it continues: "I'm sorry, I know that's a strange way to tell you that I know we belong, that I am, I am, I am the luckiest."
10. What Ben Folds song contains the following lyrics? "When money talks, I hate to listen, but lately it's been screaming in my ear."

Answer: Emaline

From "Ben Folds Live" (among other albums not on my quiz). A song about relationship doubts. I love the vocal part in the chorus: "When I've had enough, I tell myself that we've learned our lesson, but I don't wanna walk away from Emaline!"
11. "Everyday she wears the same thing. I think she smokes pot. She's everything I want. She's everything I'm not." In which song does Ben sing about this eccentric woman?

Answer: Kate

From "Whatever and Ever Amen". Kate is certainly an eccentric woman, but it's her quirks that are so endearing.
12. Ben sings some pretty bad French. Here's what it's supposed to be: "Désolé, je suis américain. Please cook my steak again. Je suis américain. Désolé, je ne parle pas français." Which song is it?

Answer: Your Redneck Past

From "The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner". A song about, well, the "hundred ways to cover your redneck past." I thought the bad French was hilarious. If it was all in English, it would say, "Sorry, I am American. Please cook my steak again. I am American. Sorry, I do not speak French." Well, that explains that!
13. "Why you gotta act like you know when you don't know? It's okay if you don't know everything." In what song does Ben offer these potentially comforting words?

Answer: Bastard

From "Songs For Silverman". The song contains one of my favorite gems of wisdom from Ben: "The more you know, you know you don't know shit."
14. What song features this complaint? "I come running when you want me here, and when you want me to I disappear."

Answer: Give Judy My Notice

From "Songs for Silverman". A song about ending a controlling relationship: "And Judy, I won't be your bitch anymore, and follow you around, and hold the door." Once again, Ben tends not to sugarcoat things, but that's why I love him!
15. I've saved the last one for breaking my rules, so I'm not giving you lyrics this time. On "Rockin' the Suburbs" there is a track entitled "Fred Jones Part 2", but Ben never wrote "Fred Jones" or "Fred Jones Part 1". What was his first song about Fred Jones?

Answer: Cigarette

From "Whatever and Ever Amen". It seems that Fred Jones has had a very tough life! The complete lyrics: "Fred Jones was worn out from caring for his often screaming and crying wife during the day, but he couldn't sleep at night for fear that she, in a stupor from the drugs that didn't ease the pain, would set the house ablaze with a cigarette."
