Helmet Trivia Questions

1. What is the name of Helmet's lead singer and guitarist who has been the only constant member since the band's inception in 1989?

From Quiz
Helmet

Answer: Page Hamilton

Hamilton trained in jazz guitar, the complex arrangements taken from which have heavily influenced Helmet's work. Hamilton has also collaborated with David Bowie, Linkin Park and fellow alternative metal band Therapy?. John Stanier was Helmet's drummer for the first four albums, Dave Grohl was Nirvana's drummer and is now known for being the vocalist and guitarist of Foo Fighters. Mike Patton has been involved with many bands, but is most widely known for his work as Faith No More's vocalist.

2. How many people are in the band?

From Quiz Helmet

Answer: Four

Helmet's been a four-piece since their early beginnings in the late 80s. The original line-up was Page Hamilton, vocals, guitar, Peter Mengede, Henry Bogdan, bass, and John Stanier, drums.

3. In what year was Helmet's first album 'Strap It On' initially released?

From Quiz Helmet

Answer: 1990

"Strap It On" was released in early 1990 under Amphetamine Reptile Records, but was re-released in late 1991 when the band moved to Interscope in 1991. While the songs received little attention, the album is regarded as a cult classic and was listed at number twelve on Alternative Press' 90 Best Albums of the 90s.

4. What's the slightly unusual forename of the Helmet mastermind who is also on the guitar, and lead singer?

From Quiz Helmet

Answer: Page

The Helmet mastermind was born as Page Hamilton on May 18th 1960 in Portland, Oregon.

5. One of the songs on 'Strap It On' shares its name with the surname of a member of the 'Rat Pack'. Can you name it?

From Quiz Helmet

Answer: Sinatra

The song contains the lyric "It's Sinatra's world, she just lives here", paraphrasing Dean Martin's famous line "It's Sinatra's world, we just live in it". "Sinatra" is much different to the rest of the album, utilising a slower pace, without compromising on the aggression that would define Helmet. The song has also been covered in the studio by Deftones.

6. Due to critics, what's the name of that Helmet-typical kind of music?

From Quiz Helmet

Answer: Jazzcore

When Helmet appeared in the late 80s, their listeners and critics couldn't really name their kind of music, because there hadn't been any kind of comparable music. So they spoke of their aggressive and jazz-influenced noise attacks as 'jazzcore'.

7. How many recordings did Helmet produce in the original line-up?

From Quiz Helmet

Answer: Six

There were six of them, the first EP 'Born Annoying' in 1989, their first album 'Strap It On' in 1991, the award-winning 'Meantime' in 1992, an expanded and re-recorded version of their first EP, 'Born Annoying 1993', the biggest success, 'Betty' in 1994 and their last album in the original line-up, 'Aftertaste' in 1997.

8. The lead single from 'Meantime' was Helmet's most popular song and contains the lyrics "Gone by sin too slowly, can't pass it up". What is the name of this classic?

From Quiz Helmet

Answer: Unsung

"Unsung" was the catalyst that catapulted Helmet into the mainstream, the music video being one of the most popular on MTV in 1992. The song was covered for the first "Guitar Hero" game and is included on "Radio X" in Rockstar Games' 2004 open world sandbox "Grand Theft Auto San Andreas".

9. For 'Betty' in 1994, Page Hamilton appeared with a second forename. What was it?

From Quiz Helmet

Answer: Nye

I can't really tell why, but he is credited quite a few times with this second name during the time of the 'Betty' release.

10. Helmet's third studio album was released in 1994, but what was its name?

From Quiz Helmet

Answer: Betty

"Betty" charted higher than "Meantime" when it was released in the summer of 1994, but never hit the heights of its predecessor in terms of commercial success. The band took the risk of taking a more experimental approach incorporating themes from jazz (a genre Hamilton is well versed in with his jazz guitar background), funk and blues. The band went on a North American and European tour in 2014-15 to commemorate its 20th anniversary. The album was played in full, followed by a selection of fan favourites from the rest of their albums.

11. According to Hamilton, Helmet broke up in 1998 and never really found a way back because of whom and why?

From Quiz Helmet

Answer: John Stanier ignoring any attempts to communicate or reconcile

According to Hamilton, John Stanier refused to talk to him because of various incidents. He stated that he himself would have been open to a Helmet reunion.

12. Complete the title of the first song on Helmet's third studio album: 'Wilma's ___'

From Quiz Helmet

Answer: Rainbow

"Wilma's Rainbow" is named after a shop Hamilton saw while walking around before a show in New Orleans, according to his 2015 interview with Rolling Stone. The album it comes from, "Betty", was eagerly anticipated and reached number 45 on the Billboard 200 album chart, an impressive feat for a band who never expected mainstream success.

13. Complete the lyric from a song from 'Aftertaste' (the lyric is also the name of the song title): "I'd rather be insulted by you, than someone I respect. If I don't share the same view, it's just my ____"

From Quiz Helmet

Answer: Birth Defect

It's certainly a lyric that resonates with me, and I must say I enjoyed inventing the other incorrect answers. The "Aftertaste" album received mixed reviews at opposite ends of the spectrum, 'Allmusic' described it as a "bland alternative metal album", yet 'Alternative Press' gave it a 5/5. The album went out of print in 2006.

14. In 1994, their most successful year, Hamilton played guitar for an Irish band. What's the name of that band and the song?

From Quiz Helmet

Answer: Therapy?, 'Unbeliever'

Hamilton liked Therapy? a lot since he watched them playing in the US after their huge success with the 1994 release 'Troublegum'. Both bands wanted to play together or just feature one of them from time to time, but never made it.
